The Boston Chinese Museum, established following the first official trade agreement between the U.S. and China (Wanghsia Treaty of 1844), operated 1845-1847 in Boston before traveling to Philadelphia. - Racist, metamorphic birthday card depicting a caricatured portrayal of a Black man taxi driver and a Black man passenger, riding in a taxi. Scene, with the card closed, shows the exterior of a yellow taxi with blue and checkered trims. The passenger and driver, depicted with exaggerated and minstrelized features, including wide eyes and a circular mouth, look out their respective rear and front windows, and toward the viewer. The passenger wears a bowler hat and the driver is in a uniform, including a cap. A suitcase is strapped to the top and a a spare tire is attached to the rear of the vehicle. - Advertisement calendar for the year 1883 containing a sentimental, genre scene for the firm renamed Geo. S. Harris & Sons in 1876. Scene shows a woman attired in a diaphanous dress, with plunging neckline and a high-rimmed bonnet, seated under a branch of an apple tree. A cluster of flowers, a butterfly, and a paper fan dominate the foreground and in the background, a farmhouse on a hillside completes the scene. Also includes decorative trim in the upper edge. Harris, first listed as a printer in 1847, operated one of the largest Philadelphia lithographic studios in the later 19th-century. - Collection of printing plates, including several with a Philadelphia provenance and a number with engraved marks on the recto and verso. Designs include calling cards, scientific illustrations, border specimens, and the frontispiece in "Count Roderic's Castle, or, Gothic Times" (Philadelphia, 1795) illustrated with a swordfighting scene. Engraved marks depict birds, floral imagery, filigree, mathematical and anatomical diagrams, and geometric details. One plate also used as a trial plate and contains a montage of details, including a shield, sickle, female allegorical figure, a female figure leaning on a horse and with a basket at her feet, the monogram “CPH,” and strings of letters. Collection also includes two envelopes with inscriptions about their content and two type blocks containing marks depicting monograms.
