- Trade card promoting A. Colburn & Co.'s mustard and depicting a racist caricature of an young African girl riding an ostrich in a tropical setting. Show the barefooted girl, attired in a short-sleeved, knee-length, red dress with yellow trim, holding on to the ostrich's neck with both hands. The grey ostrich takes a long stride with its legs as it runds on a dirt path. Plants with palm leaves, greenery, and a rock line the path. Arthur T. Colburn (1834-1901) founded the spice business A. Colburn & Co. in 1856 in Philadelphia. - Racist trade card depicting a smiling African American boy portrayed as fishing bait for an alligator in a swamp. Shows the boy suspended from a tree limb over the gaping jaws of the head of the reptile jutting out from the body of water below him. The boy is held up by a hook in the seat of his pants that is attached to white thread wrapped around the tree limb and from a large spool that floats in the water. The spool bears the Merrick Thread Co. logo. The boy holds the fishing line of thread and fishing rod in his hands and by his face. He is barefooted and attired in a blue hat, a red shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a white vest, and blue pants with a patch on the right knee. The boy is depicted with exaggerated features. Print also contains an image on verso depicting a partially opened box of several spools of thread, on which the thread company's tagline "Merrick Thread Co's Ready Wound Bobbins for Sewing Machines Warranted 200 Yards" is printed. Merrick Thread Co. was founded in 1865 by Timothy Merrick, Austin Merrick, and Origen Hall in Mansfield, Connecticut. After its founding, the company established mills in Holyoke, Massachusetts. In 1898, the company merged with thirteen other independent thread and yarn manufacturers to form the American Thread Company. The distributor of the thread, Isaac J.H. Bordner, owned a store which was built in 1881 and located in the Mount Aetna neighborhood of Tulpehocken Township in Pennsylvania. - Advertisement for the resort area operated by Caspar Boenning at the Delaware River Island containing a "General View of Smith's Island (Fare 6 Cts To Go & Return)" surrounded by 8 scenes showing island amusements and entertainments. Central view depicts a sailboat passing two ferries of people approaching the pier adorned with a tall flagpole and signage for "C. Boenning Baths." Individuals walk on the pier and paths on the island near resort and residential buildings, including the residence of Robert W. Smith. A ferry boat travels through the channel in the right of the image. Upper surrounding vignettes include 3 titled scenes "Residence of Thomas G. Smith," "Swimming & Shower Bath," and "Residence of Robert W. Smith." Shows visitors strolling the building and grounds of the residences. Robert Smith residence also shows a dog swimming and a man on a skiff in a reservoir besides the fenced dwelling. Contains an anachronistic scene including a caricaturized depiction of Continental Army officers. Depicts the officers eating pitted cherries from a pan under the Enterprise cherry stoner. A female cook carrying a basket of cherries addresses them. Another basket of cherries lay on the floor. Also contains a view of the Mines Building designed by S. S. Beman. The exposition held in Chicago May 1-October 30, 1898 celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. He bemoans his being unaccustomed to such living and that "you must order some more healthy food, or I shall starve to death." The doctor responds it is "good healthy food, such as our soldiers are fed on" and that their recent achievements prove it is "tolerably healthy." Shows the mother with her brown hair tied up in a bun and attired in a long-sleeved, striped pink dress with yellow pleats at the bottom and white lace at the collar and cuffs of the sleeves. She cradles in her arms an infant wrapped in a white blanket with two yellow stripes. She looks down at her son standing in the right. He is attired in an orange, long-sleeved shirt with a white collar, a yellow skirt and leggings, and black shoes. He asks, “Mamma, what’s the matter with baby?” She replies that, “Baby’s very sick.” The boy holds up a cannister labeled “Safe Yeast” and states, “Dinah says Warner’s Safe Yeast is the best thing she knows of, to raise him.” In the right, Dinah stands looking on, attired in a yellow bonnet, red earrings, a yellow, short-sleeved dress with a white collar and red tie, and a white apron. In the bottom right is a large cannister of Warner’s Safe Yeast. Image also includes a blue and green rug, fireplace andirons, and in the background a windowpane with a blue vase with yellow flowers. Outside the window the sun comes up and reads, “up with the sun.” Hulbert Harrington Warner (1842-1923) founded a patent medicine business in Rochester, N.Y. in 1878. He created Warner’s Safe Yeast in 1885. - Racist trade card promoting Knox Gelatine and depicting an African American woman domestic making a gelatin molded dessert with a white girl. Shows an African American woman domestic attired in a head kerchief, spectacles, a patterned shawl, and a white, long-sleeved shirt, sitting in a kitchen behind a table. She teaches the white girl, attired in a hair bow and a striped dress with a ruffled collar, how to decorate a molded gelatin dessert and places a berry on top it. The girl has a bowl of berries in front of her and holds a spoon with a berry on it. On the table there is a mold, a glass, a lid, a knife, a pitcher, and a box labeled, “Knox’s Gelatine.” In the background is a brick hearth with pots and an oven in the right. Charles B. Knox (1855-1908) of Johnstown, New York discovered a method of granulating gelatine in 1889, which made it practical and easy to use. Charles died in 1908, and his wife Rose Knox ran the company for the next forty years. - Collection consists of approximately one hundred items, primarily advertising ephemera, relating to the Centennial Exhibition, held in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park in 1876 to celebrate America’s one-hundredth anniversary of independence and to showcase the strengths of the country’s industry, manufactures, agriculture, and art. Materials include circulars, price lists, advertising cards, stationery, and pamphlets for goods and services, including washboards, ironing tables, saws, springs, sewing machines, mills, mowers, reapers, horse shoes, and hotel accommodations. Other documents include souvenir view books and guidebooks for visitors, maps, a Centennial Board of Finance letterhead, a Centennial award seal, programs, and admission tickets. Several of the items contain illustrations, such as views of the Centennial buildings, and depictions of products. - Shows a class for young National League for Women's Service workers at the Germantown estate "Little Wakefield." In the center, an African American woman, attired in a long-sleeved dress with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows and an apron, stands behind a table over a metal basin as she demonstrates preserving techniques. A group of young women gather around her and watch. In the left, more students stand around a stove and take jars out of a metal basin and pot. The students, many in the similar attire of a white blouse and dark bloomers, take notes, observe, assist in the preserving process, and take a photo with a hand held camera. They stand outside a building on a porch that is covered with a wooden trellis with vines growing on it. A voluntary organization in support of the homefront during World War I, the League used the Little Wakefield estate as a demonstration center. They held classes in home economics and canning and preserving, grew fruits and vegetables, and cultivated bees. Little Wakefield was built by Thomas Rodman Fisher in 1829 on property adjacent to his father's estate, Wakefield, located at 1601 Lindley Avenue. Fine Coach Varnishes 1880 calendar portraying scenes after the racist “Blackville” series drawn by Sol Eytinge for “Harper’s Weekly” in the 1870s and depicting caricatures satirizing the social mores, customs, and daily lives of African Americans of all classes. The figures are portrayed with exaggerated features and mannerisms. The attire of the figures includes long-sleeved dresses, shirtwaists and skirts, smocks, shirt, pants, jackets, and caps, and hats. Some of the attire depicted, particularly for younger figures, is worn and/or tattered.
