Description: View looking northwest at the north side of the 1200 block of Chestnut Street showing the Chestnut Street Theater built in 1863 after designs by John Crump. Includes signs for Allen's furniture store (i.e., Joseph Allen, cabinet maker, 1209 Chestnut) and a concert hall north of the theater building. All of the properties have awnings shading the street level, except for the theater, which has street lamps lining the sidewalk and a broadside advertising "E.L. Davenport's Theatre...A Dream of Life" near the entrance. He served as the chief photographer for the U.S. Army Medical Museum in 1865 and replaced Timothy O'Sullivan on George M. Wheeler's survey of the territories west of the 100th meridian in 1872. He returned to Philadelphia, went into business with his future son-in-law William Rau in 1875, and was active in the photography community until his death in 1910.

Description: Advertisement souvenir print distributed by the Philadelphia furniture dealers containing a montage of 3 panoramas, 3 views, and 2 allegorical vignettes. Panoramas show schematic views of Philadelphia, and the views show Independence Hall, 1867 and Gould & Company's Union Depots located at N.E. cor. 9th & Market Sts. and at 37 & 39 N. Second Street. Panoramic views predominately show the Eastern, Western, and Central portions of the city from across the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers. Major landmarks are visually highlighted and identified by text below the images. Title: Henry Adolph, manufacturer of furniture wholesale and retail, warerooms no. 36 North Second St., one door above the Christ Church Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the exterior of the furniture warerooms near Christ Church (22-34 N. 2nd St.). Clusters of people admire the furniture displayed in the windows of the storefront as patrons enter the building. The store is heavily adorned with signage and an American flag. Men, women, and children, including a man pushing a handcart, walk on the bustling sidewalk. A woman with a girl, and a delivery boy, cross the street near the "No. 21 Exchange & Richmond" streetcar, a "H. Adolph" delivery wagon, and another laborer pushing a handcart. Many of the women carry parasols. Also shows the gated, tree-lined promenade between the church and warerooms., Philadelphia on Stone, POS 347, Atwater Kent Museum: 47.33.7/3. With manuscripts notes giving date as June 1861 and indicating that the print formerly belonged to John A. McAllister., Rease, a prominent mid-19th century Philadelphia trade card lithographer known to highlight details of human interest in his advertisements, partnered with Francis H. Title: J.C. Hand & Co. Fine furniture, no. 1205 Market Street, Philadelphia
Description: Racist trade card promoting the J.C. Hand & Co. and depicting a caricature of an older African American man reading a notice on a country grocery store. Shows the man with a white beard and attired in a yellow brimmed hat, a long-sleeved red shirt, red and yellow pants with patches and held up by suspenders, and black shoes. He bends forward to read the sign on the boarded up, dilapidated store. It states in the vernacular that the Johnsing & Skinner Grocery is out of business and that, “Dem as owes de firm, will settle wid me--dey de firm owes will settle wid Skinner. G.W. Johnsing." The African American man is labeled as a creditor who says in the vernacular, “I’ll hab a hundred and fifty cents on de dollar, or I’ll lick de hul firm.” In the right, the man’s donkey is tied to an orange post behind him. In the background, fenced in fields and trees are visible. J. C.
