Description: Reproduction of a sketch by G. W. Leonard depicting an African American shoeshine boy dancing to the musical accompaniment of a white boy and girl, while a white boy mocks him in the background. The smiling African American boy, portrayed in racist caricature with exaggerated features, is in the center of the image. He is attired in a white, long-sleeved open neck shirt, baggy striped pants with suspenders, and a hat with turned up brims, his hands at his side, and mid step. To his right, stand a white boy playing a concertina and a white girl playing the violin. The boy is attired in a newsboy's cap, a jacket, and pants with patches at the knees. The girl is attired in a short-sleeved, calf-length, light-colored dress, with a sash draped over her right shoulder (the one on which she plays the violin). Title: Pundita Ramabai and her little girl
Description: Full-length portrait of Pandita Ramabai Sarasvati, the Indian social reformer, educator, and Bible translator, with her daughter Manorama Medhavi. Ramabai wears her dark hair parted in the middle and tied back and is attired in a light-colored dress and a long shawl draped over her shoulder and lap. Her daughter Manorama wears her dark hair parted in the middle and curled with a headband and is attired in a long-sleeved dress with embroidered leaves decorating the collar, chest, cuffs, waist, and hem; dark-colored stockings; and button-up boots. Ramabai is seated, and Manorama stands in the left and leans and places her hands on her mother's lap. Ramabai's left hand holds Manorama's left wrist. Both look slightly to the left. Pandita Ramabai Sarasvati was born into a Brahmin family in India. She became a Sanskrit scholar, and in 1878, Calcutta University conferred on her the titles of Pandita and Sarasvati in recognition of her knowledge of various Sanskrit works. She married Bipin Behari Medhvi, a Bengali lawyer, who died in 1882. She traveled to Britain and converted to Christianity. She toured and lectured in the United States and Canada raising money for destitute Indian women. She advocated for women's rights and opened Mukti Mission, a school for child-widows. Manorama Medhavi was educated at the Community of St. Mary the Virgin, Chesbrough Seminary, and earned a degree from Bombay University. Professor and Mrs. Roberts, principals of the seminary, speak with unqualified praise of her ability, strength of character, good judgment, and devotion to her chosen work. Her self-poise and yet utter unconsciousness of self charmed all who met her. In the left, ivy grows up the wall. Four young girls and one boy, some with baskets on their laps, sit on a bench beside the house and look toward the viewer. Numerous trees stand on the property around the house. Image is also pasted with glitter that decorates the grounds, as well as the border of the house, like garland. In the 19th century, the house was misidentified as being built by William Penn in 1682 and given to his daughter Letitia. Title: Isaac and Rosa, emancipated slave children, from the free schools of Louisiana
Description: Abolitionist portrait of the propagandized emancipated enslaved children, Isaac White and Rosina Downs, standing, arm-in-arm. Isaac has brown skin, and wears a shirt jacket, pants, and broad tie. He has his left hand tucked into his shirt jacket. Rosina has fair skin, and wears an off-the-shoulder, calf-length dress, cinched at the waist, and with stripe details on the neckline and skirt. She also wears pantaloons. Freed by Union General Butler in New Orleans, the children toured through the North with other emancipated enslaved people, and Colonel George H.
