Description: Advertisement showing the three-and-one-half story grocery at 121, i.e. 209 North Third Street. A laborer carries a sack through the store entrance as inside a clerk scribbles on a piece of paper as he is surrounded by piles of sacks and shelves of boxes. In the upper floor windows, other employees go about their work and piles of boxes are visible. Outside of the building, sacks are piled on the sidewalk and another worker descends the stairs to the cellar. To the right, a man leads a loaded horse-drawn dray from the side alley to the rear office of the business. At the lower office window, surrounded by barrels, a clerk is busy at his desk inside. A woman stands at a window above. Title: [Thos. Minford. Wholesale & retail grocery & tea warehouse, s.w. corner of Second and Walnut Streets, Philadelphia]
Description: Advertisement showing a southwest view of the three-story storefront, adorned with signage, on the 200 block of Walnut Street. In front of the store, a female patron reaches into a sack - one of several sacks, crates, and canisters displayed on a platform near the open doorway. Within the store, a couple stands near one of two rows of shelves of merchandise furnishing the establishment. On the second floor, large, open panel doors expose the room lined with hay. A barrel and crates, and boxes of tea and sacks stacked in the rear of the floor are visible. Several brooms are stored in front of the third floor windows. At the side of the building, two gentlemen converse near a side door and hand-cart across from a row of crates and barrels that are lined against the wall. Title: [J. C. Jenkins & Co. grocery and tea store, S.W. corner of Chestnut and 12th Streets, Philadelphia]
Description: Advertisement showing the storefront of the grocery and tea shop with unusually tall display windows on the 1200 block of Chestnut Street. The side of the building is adorned with signage reading "Flour Fish & Salt Hams Beef & Tongues Choice Family Groceries J.C. Jenkins & Co., displays of tongue and ham, signs for "Mats," and markers for Twelfth Street. A mannequin of a Chinese laborer carrying boxes of tea with a bamboo pole exhibited on a display of tea crates in addition to other displays of boxes and canisters of fancy soaps and candles line the interior and exterior of the front windows. Within the store, a clerk assists a woman and a boy at the counter. On the sidewalk, a gentleman stops in front of the building, near a box of tea at the edge of the sidewalk, to gaze at the Chinese figure, and a man, with a sack, walks past the corner. At the side of the building, a "Jenkins T Store" handcart, a barrel of "Flour," boxes of "Soap," a display of "Brooms," and a stack of pails line the sidewalk, near four trees resembling cherry trees., Date from Poulson inscription on recto: Aug. 1847. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story manufactory and storefront covered in signage of the tobacco and grocery business at 111 Race Street, i.e. the 300 block of Race Street. Within the first-floor window and entryways, a patron enters the store near a wall of shelved good and boxes on the floor; a clerk organizes canisters; and other employees check a list and move a crate. At the upper floor windows, boxes, barrels, and sacks are piled and employees work. In front of the store, laborers unload and transport boxes from a horse-drawn dray parked in the street. Crates and barrels line the sidewalk near the dray. Also shows partial views of adjacent buildings. Jacob Mayland established his tobacco business circa 1803 and operated from the 300 block of Race Street beginning in 1805. Title: [Charles Gilbert's stove manufactory, 249 North Second Street, Philadelphia]
Description: Advertisement showing the stove manufactory covered in signage in German and English on the 400 block of North Second Street. Patrons enter the storefront and a clerk, possibly the proprietor, greets a patron at a second entrance. Stoves line the walls, and are displayed at the entrances and in the shop windows. The appliances, of variant styles, including a cooking stove with a tea kettle, also line the sidewalk. Laborers work at the upper floor windows. A man and woman figure adorn two of the stoves, which flank the entrances. Also shows partial views of the adjacent businesses, including P. McBride & Co., grocer (251) and Salon [sic] Walton (247), operated by Salem Walton. Description: Advertisement showing the four-and-one-half story corner building containing signage for the grocer at the inclined corner of Callowhill and Water Street. Signage, including a flag hanging from an upper window, advertises "Groceries & Provisions" and "Sea Stores Put Up." A male patron enters one of the entrances near a pile of sacks as through the other a clerk helping a patron is visible. Barrels of merchandise, including brooms, are displayed at that entryway. Outside of the business, more barrels are piled on the sidewalk while a laborer runs a rope around another at the open cellar door. Description: Unlettered proof of advertisement showing a North Third Street block of businesses (37-43) above Market Street. Includes (left to right) Sieger, Lamb & Co., dry goods (43); Brown, Frederick & Kunkel, men's and boys' wear and Irwin, Shultz & Peiper, merchants (41); S. Brock Jr., fancy dry goods and Iungerich & Smith, grocers (39); and Lloyd & Walmsley, trimmings (37). Storefronts are four to five stories and are built of stone. Gentlemen patrons enter and exit, including one descending an interior flight of stairs, most of the establishments. A crate rests outside and boxes are piled near the second-floor windows of Brown, Frederick, & Kunkel. Barrels crowd the first floor of Iungerich & Smith into which a laborer rolls a barrel as two line the sidewalk behind him. Outside of Lloyd & Walmsley, a gentleman inspects a large box and men sit on or address crates in front of Sieger, Lamb & Co. Drays, a wagon, and handcart, attended by their drivers, and loaded with goods, many with faint writing, are parked in front of, or depart, from each building. Description: Keepsake print containing a rollicking view of members of the volunteer hose company racing their hose carriage around the corner from their firehouse at Tamany (i.e., Buttonwood) Street below York Avenue. Firefighters, most in gear, pull the carriage, run from behind the vehicle, and suit up in the entry to their firehouse. The house contains an iron-work verandah, and a tower from which a volunteer directs the company. Adjacent to the station house at the corner stands "Tamany Hall," an oyster house adorned in signage, including the name of proprietor "Jas. Griffiths" and street signs. The proprietor stands at his doorway, a server watches from outside, and a patron rushes out a rear entry. At the opposite corner, the grocery store of "Tunis O. Bancroft" stands. A female clerk stands in the doorway and merchandise displays, including brooms and buckets, line the storefront. The store owner, attired in an apron and top hat, stands out front, under an awning, and watches the commotion. Another hose carriage, ornately decorated, rests nearby in the street. A small toolbox, bucket, and sponge lie in the street next to the apparatus. View also shows the neighboring residential buildings on the block and around the corner. United States Hose Company was instituted on July 4, 1826 and incorporated on March 13, 1833. Baltimore held a Fireman's Celebration in cooperation with Washington D.C. in November 1851 that was attended by the United States Hose Company.
