The hall contains a cupola and is protected by an ornate iron fence. Trees flank the building. The hall was occupied by the police station and rented for entertainment and political meetings before use as a hospital during the Civil War. Description: Advertisement showing the busy interior of the saloon and concert hall built 1857 on the 500 block of North Third Street. Men, women, and children patrons sit, drink, read, approach, and are served at several tables in front of a stage. In the foreground, men gather near two bars on each side of the saloon. The bar in the right of the image contains a soda fountain. Each is manned by bartenders and is stocked with bottles of liquor. A framed painting, a wall clock, and a large mirror decorate the areas. Several hanging and plotted plants adorn the balconies that are lined with windows. Title: Henry Miller's concert garden. Nos. 720 & 722 Vine Str. Philadelphia
Description: Sheet music cover containing an interior view of the crowded concert hall and theater operated by Henry Miller beginning circa 1854. Several men and women sit at, and converse and walk among the many tables of the seating area as a number of waiters serve the patrons. A music ensemble plays on a raised platform with guard rails in the left of the image and several people line a small stage in the center rear of the hall where a small performance appears to be happening. To the right of the performance, the stairwell to the upper balcony, lined with people, is visible. Greenery and vinery decorate the hall that includes a glass ceiling and windows, some open, across and adjacent to the balcony. A patron enters the establishment as a man, probably the proprietor, stands near the entrance. A laborer emerges from the cellar holding a keg. Kegs and a case of liquor bottles line the sidewalk near a horse-drawn dray situated in the street for loading. Title: Commissioners Hall, Northern Liberties, Phila
Description: Exterior winter view of the hall as it looked on February 22, 1852, with adjoining fenced property, adorned with an American flag, and containing the district's police station and Mayor's office, on the busy, snow covered Third Street between Buttonwood and Green streets. Several warmly dressed white pedestrians, hall officials, and a policeman mill about and converse on the sidewalk; white children throw snowballs and play with a sled; horse-drawn sleighs pass by; white men shovel snow off the street and hall steps; and an African American man carrying a basket of celery and a dead goose stops in the street and looks behind him and toward the passing sled. A broadside inscribed, "Washington, 22nd Feb. 1852" adorns a nearby building. Prior to the city's consolidation with bordering townships in 1854, neighborhoods maintained and housed their own police stations, mayors, and other government officials in Commissioners Halls, including Northern Liberties. Title: Odd Fellows' Broadway Hall. Broad & Spring Garden Streets, Philadelphia
Description: View looking east down Spring Garden Street from Broad Street showing the Odd Fellows Hall at the northeast corner of Spring Garden and Broad streets (400 block N. Broad). A horse-drawn carriage is parked and another passes in front of the hall enlarged in 1853 after the designs of Samuel Sloan for the benevolent and charitable organization, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The roof of the building is adorned with statues representing Charity and Hope, tenets of the organization and red drapes are visible in the second floor windows. The busy street also includes a couple with their son walking their dog; a gentleman and woman on horseback; a hurried surrey; an omnibus pulled by a horse-team dressed in regalia traveling in front of the Spring Garden Institute (northwest corner Spring Garden and Broad); and men talking near the fountain completed in 1853 in the center of the block of Spring Garden.
