Title: Harvest in Wanyamézi
Description: Illustration included in Chapter V, "Unyamuezi." Unyamuezi [i.e., Unyamwezi] was one of the largest kingdoms in East Africa; its people are called Wanyamezi. As the title suggests, the engraving shows a Wanyamezi harvest in 1861. Corn, which grew abundantly on the richly cultivated land, is shown at the top. In the center, four men thrash the corn with long-handled paddles. Title: Souvenir calendar and memorandum book. Compliments of McCormick Harvesting Machine Co. Chicago, Ill
Description: Advertisement souvenir containing illustrated calendar pages and "Memorandum" sheets printed with paragraphs of promotional text about McCormick and his machinery. Illustrations depict seasonal, genre and landscape scenes, including a man fishing (July), a couple canoeing (August), ducks on promenade down a dirt path (September), a waterfall and winter scene near a homestead (October and November), and deers in a snow-covered forest (December). Promotional text describes the superiority of the McCormick mowers based on "Durability. Convenience and Light Draft"; the machines' prevalence, profitability, history, patents, and awards; the ingenuity of McCormick, the plant, and his employees; and the "best farmers" paying higher prices for McCormick mowers because " Others may cut the prices but the McCormick cuts the grain." Also contains a "Map of the Business Portion of Chicago" and views of a horse-drawn McCormick reaper ("The Winner of the Grand Prizes All Around the World") and draft mower no. 4 ("The Most Durable and Lightest Draft Mower on Earth") on the inside front and back covers., Front and back cover illustrated. Strawbridge & Clothier, Eighth & Market Sts., Philada."; an old man seated with his cane watching a woman harvest wheat; a chef wearing an apron and chef's hat pulling on the neck of a duck; and a porter rushing off of a train to help a man carrying Strawbridge & Clothier packages. In 1861, Justus Strawbridge opened a dry goods store at the northwest corner of Market and Eighth streets. Title: [John H. Webster, Sr., and Albert Webster with a horse-drawn harvester on Stouton farm, Philadelphia, Pa.]
Description: Depicts Albert Webster sitting on a horse-drawn plow, and his father, John H. Webster, Sr., standing in front of the horse with a pitchfork. Bales of hay cover the field in the background. They're on the farm behind Stouton, the former country seat of William MacPherson, owned by the Webster family since 1805., William MacPherson was the son of Captain John MacPherson (1726-1792) from Edinburgh. William served as lieutenant for the British army during the first year of the Revolutionary War, but joined the Colonial army under the leadership of Lafayette. Appointed surveyor of the Port of Philadelphia in 1789 and commanded the Philadelphia battalion, the "MacPherson Blues", during the Whiskey Insurrection in 1794. Married Margaret Stout and resided at their country seat "Stouton". Site later named MacPherson Park., Attributed to John H. Webster but may have been taken by other Webster family members.

Description: Racist trade card promoting Arbuckle Bros. coffee and depicting African Americans in a field harvesting corn. Shows an African American woman, attired in a straw hat, a green, long-sleeved shirt, a yellow shawl, and a red skirt, smiling as she picks corn off of a stalk in the foreground. In the left, an African American man, attired in a straw hat, a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows, brown pants, and brown shoes, looks at the viewer as he carries corn in his arms. In the background, two more farm laborers are visible. Brothers John and Charlie Arbuckle, Arbuckle Bros., established their factory and warehouse in Brooklyn in 1881 after they invented a machine that roasted, ground, and packaged coffee into bags. Their first national brand was patented under the name Arbuckle’s Ariosa. The company succeeded into the 20th century.
