Description: "Fortieth Illustrated" circular advertisement, probably distributed to retail dealers, for the hat manufacturer established in 1841. Contains captioned images of 66 types of men's and children's hats for the "Spring" season of 1876. Captions detail style, finish, and colors. In tribute to the upcoming Centennial Exhibition, vignettes at top depict Carpenters' Hall, Independence Hall, and a buffalo hunt. Building views inlcude pedestrian traffic. Also contains trademark for the firm with motto "Semper Paratus" (i.e., always prepared). Internal text promotes the quality and styles of hats offered, including fine soft hats, fur and wool hats, harvest hats, mackinaws, and trimmed and untrimmed hats. Text on verso encourages business people to visit Philadelphia prior to the opening of the Exhibition in order to become acquainted with the city and its accommodations, and to purchase spring fashions at the firm., Accompanied by advertising envelope for the firm illustrated with a transfer lithograph of the store at 606 & 608 Market Street. Description: Advertisement showing the ornately furnished interior of the hat store established by Oakford in 1827. Fitting tables adorned with lavish free standing light fixtures in front of glass display cases filled with men's hats line the sides of the room. In the foreground, Oakford assists a patron seated at one of the tables on top of which a number of hats lie. Behind the men, a clerk pulls a hat from one of the cases. In the background, in front of another fitting table on which hats sit, a clerk and gentleman patron stand and discuss hats in their hands. A third gentleman patron watches the exchange from across the aisle. Arches extend toward the visible rear of the store and are labeled "Charles Oakford & Sons"; "Gent's Furnishing Goods"; and "Wholesale Department." Tiles line the floor and the ceiling has minimal molding. Description: Advertisement showing the three-and-one-half story storefront, covered in advertising text, on the 700 block of Market Street. Advertising reads "The Cheapest Wholesale & Retail Hat and Cap Manufactory in the World. Fashionable Styles. Caps. Hats." A male patron enters one of two open doorways to the establishment, in which a clerk surveys stacks of hats across from a flight of stairs. At the other end of the store, another clerk assists a patron, standing in front of a mirror, as he tries on hats next to shelves of merchandise. Between the entries, men's and boys' hats and caps adorn a display window flanked by cases of "hats" and "caps" displayed outside. Boxes, hats, and milliners at work, are visible at the upper windows. A large model hat and cap adorn the roof of the building. In the street, a horse-drawn dray is positioned to receive a delivery opposite a laborer retrieving a crate labeled "M. Dormitzen Middleton Sch. County" from the store cellar. Labeled crates line the sidewalk with addressees that include "Heitner & Shay Augusta Northumberland Co. Pa."; "T.L. Mitchell Jefferson Co. Pa."; "Young & Lee Allentown Pa."; "Geo. L. Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront for the hat manufactory established by Christopher H. Garden at 196, later 532 Market Street. The storefront is covered with signage and adorned with a large model hat marked with the street address "196." Description: Advertisement showing the adjacent businesses of wholesale druggists Charles Moyer and A. Fullerton Hazard (successors of Alexander Fullerton, 174 Market Street), and wholesale and retail hatter, Elijah Bowen (176 Market Street). Both four-story, three-bay buildings are covered in signage. Signs advertise "Alexander Fullerton drugs medicine & paints" in two locations on the facade of 174 Market Street, indicating a recent shift in ownership of the drug store. A man stands in each of the two doors to each store. In Moyer & Hazard's shop, a man stands in the left doorway and points and directs a laborer who moves goods on a dolly. Another man emerges from the bulkhead, while a gentleman wearing a top hat enters the business through the door on the right. Decanters and other glassware fill the shop windows. Boxes and barrels labeled "Madder," "Indigo," "Sp. Turpentine," "G. Copal," "Oil Vit." line the edge of the sidewalk in the foreground. A man moves a box in the left door of Elijah Bowen's shop.
