Founders Hall, built in 1833, was the first building of the Haverford School, later College. It served as the only living and learning quarters of the College until 1877 when Barclay Hall was built. Thomas graduated from Haverford College in 1865 and returned as an instructor in 1878. After getting his masters in history in 1882, he continued as a professor of rhetoric and history until 1909. Thomas stands in the back and while the Sharpless children sit on the step. Isaac Sharpless was a Quaker mathematician and astronomer at Haverford College (founded 1833). He served as Dean of Haverford College from 1884 to 1887, and then president from 1887 to 1917. Allen Thomas graduated from Haverford College in 1865 and returned as an instructor in 1878. After getting his masters in history in 1882, he continued as a professor of rhetoric and history until 1909. He also worked extensively with the library until 1912. Smith was a proprietor of Whitall, Tatum & Co. glass manufactory in New Jersey during the 1860s. He and his brother Horace J. relocated to England in the later 19th century.

Lewis graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1876 with a masters of Arts degree. In 1879, he went on to work for the Geological Survey of Pennsylvania for three years.
