Many of the shelves have bust statues resting on top. Elias Henley White (Haverford College class of 1885) and William Samuel Hilles (class of 1885) sit in the foreground reading. - Glass negative showing a full length portrait of Jedediah H. Adams and Allan M. Mowry (Haverford College class of 1887 and part of the Everett Society) dressed in elaborate costumes. One is dressed as a woman with a long dresses and purse and the other wears a three-piece suit, top hat, and false beard. They stand in front of a stone wall covered with vines and a suitcase sits on the ground near the man's feet. The Everett Society was founded by students in 1858. Their activities included declamations, orations, debates and essay writing. The Society merged with the Haverford Athenaeum in 1889 to form the Everett-Athenaeum Society., Same as last., Photographer remarks: Upright on plate. Intensified. In the left, Murray, attired in a white collared shirt, a tie, a waistcoat, a jacket, pants, and black shoes, stands placing his left hand on the back of the chair his wife sits in to the right and slightly in front of him. Mrs. Murray, wearing her curly hair tied behind her head and attired in hoop earrings, a long-sleeved checkered blouse with a white lace collar and decorative buttons running down the middle, a dark-colored skirt with ruching at the bottom, and dark-colored shoes, sits with her hands on her lap. - Glass negative showing Professor Isaac Sharpless' three children, Helen, Amy Cope, and Fredric Sharpless, and Professor Allen Clapp Thomas' son Eddie Thomas (Haverford College class of 1897), posed in a doorway at Founder's Hall. Thomas stands in the back and while the Sharpless children sit on the step. Isaac Sharpless was a Quaker mathematician and astronomer at Haverford College (founded 1833). He served as Dean of Haverford College from 1884 to 1887, and then president from 1887 to 1917. Allen Thomas graduated from Haverford College in 1865 and returned as an instructor in 1878. After getting his masters in history in 1882, he continued as a professor of rhetoric and history until 1909. He also worked extensively with the library until 1912. Founders Hall, built in 1833, was the first building of the Haverford School, later College. Smith's residence (below Grumblethorpe, Germantown), The Cedars (Whitall family summer home, Haddonfield, N.J.), and The “Mansion” at Millville, New Jersey ("Lloyd Logan Smith's birthplace"). Other portraiture includes group portraits showing the Haverford and Bryn Mawr Classes of 1885, "The Spices" cooking Club, "The Band of Cousins, a wedding banquet, and the Grange (London, England). The couple had six children: Lloyd Pearsall Smith, librarian of the Library Company; Albanus Smith (1823-1842); Robert Pearsall Smith, printer, businessman, and evangelical leader; Gulielma Smith (died in childhood); Horace J. Smith, agriculturist and author; and Elizabeth Pearsall Smith, editor of "Recollections of John Jay Smith." Richard P. Smith was a proprietor of Whitall, Tatum & Co. glass manufactory in New Jersey during the 1860s. He and his brother Horace J. relocated to England in the later 19th century.
