Title: High Street in 1799 at present Market Street Philadelphia, Pa
Description: Founder's Week postcards commemorating the 225th anniversary of the founding of Philadelphia. Copies of William Birch's engraved view of High (Market) Street from Ninth depicting a detachment of the First City Troop of Philadelphia drilling on horseback. The troop promenades up the busy street where several horse-drawn carts and a dray travel and several pedestrians, including an African American man and boy (in the right), watch the guard and/or stroll the tree-lined sidewalks. A market shed is seen in the distance. The First City Troop, one of the oldest continually mounted U.S. military units, was organized in 1774 to defend against British invasion. The troop used a variety of arenas to perform drills including circuses, riding schools, and various public grounds. Founder’s Week celebrated the 225th anniversary of the founding of Philadelphia, October 4-10, 1908. Description: Advertisement showing street and pedestrian activity in front of the four-story corner storefront, with signage, for the jewelry and watch store at 112, i.e., 316 Chestnut Street. A sign illustrated with a watch and reading "No. 112 John C. Farr& Co. Wholesale and Retail" adorns the side of the building above a window with a shade advertising watches, jewelry, and silverware. At the store entrance, a clerk greets two ladies and a girl between the display windows filled with silverware, jewelry, and watches. In front of the store, a lady and gentleman converse near the horses of an out-of-view carriage, and at the corner, a gentleman, possibly, a store clerk talks with two ladies accompanied by a child and dog. Also shows a partial view, including signage and the display window, of the neighboring business, Eugene Roussel, perfumer. In addition, print contains a Gothic-style border as well as pictorial elements that flank the central image. Title: Col. Fremont's last grand exploring expedition in 1856
Description: Cartoon ridiculing the antislavery convictions of John C. Frémont, the 1856 Republican presidential candidate and former explorer, and his abolitionist supporters during the Kansas-Nebraska crisis. Depicts Frémont's fictional expedition through the hills of "Kansas-Nebraska" atop New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley portrayed as the "Abolition Nag." Frémont states the road is hard astride the "Old Hack," but if he gets to the White House safely he will forgive his friends who put him there. Pulling Greeley by a rope is New York Republican William Seward who heads to the "Salt River" (i.e., political doom) in "Bleeding Kansas." Greeley admits to going the "same road as '52" but will follow Seward's lead. A gun-laden Henry Ward Beecher, the abolitionist minister, pledges to furnish rifles to antislavery Kansas settlers. Description: Cartoon addressing the tenuous position of Republican presidential nominee General Ulysses S. Grant as the candidate of a party whose radicals support African American civil rights and Reconstruction under military rule. Depicts Grant holding up a knife inscribed "military despotism" as he straddles the "radical platform" rope that is stretched across the "Salt River" (i.e., political disaster). One end of the rope is tied to a rifle labeled "military reconstruction." The other end is held by "Negro supremacy" depicted as an African American man, portrayed in racist caricature, barefooted, and attired in torn and worn clothes, who sits upon the tombstone of "Southern Confederacy." Title: The great November contest. Patriotism vs bummerism
Description: Racist cartoon depicting the 1868 Presidential Election as a carriage race between the "patriotic" Democrats and the "bum" Republicans who support Reconstruction. Depicts the elegant Democratic carriage with the banner "This is a White Man's Government" pulled by the horses with the heads of Horatio Seymour and Francis P. Blair racing passed the stalled Republican wagon steered by the asses with the heads of nominees Ulysses Grant and Schuyler Colfax. In the Democrats' carriage are four allegorical figures: Liberty, depicted as a white woman holding the Constitution and a banner which reads "Our Glorious Union Distinct, like the Billows, One, Like the Sea' This is a White Man's Government!"; Navigation, depicted as a white woman holding a miniature ship; Agriculture, depicted as a white woman holding sheaves of wheat and a scythe; and Labor, represented by a bearded white man with a hammer and flywheel.
