- Racist trade card promoting Clark Thread Company and depicting a genre scene of an African American man and woman in conversation on a country road. The man and woman are portrayed with exaggerated features and speaking in the vernacular. Shows, in the left, the man standing on a dirt road and holding a piece of thread attached to a giant spool labeled "Clark's mile-end 60 spool thread." He is attired in black boots; yellow striped pants with patches on the knees and rolled to his calves; a white shirt; a red vest; and a green jacket. Clark & Brother Company, manufactory of embroidery and sewing thread, was founded in 1863 in Newark, N.J. Coats in 1896, which lead to a series of mergers with fourteen other companies. - Description
- Trade card promoting B.J. Kendall Company, manufacturer of proprietary medicine, and depicting a racist caricature of an African American man jockey portrayed with exaggarated features. Shows the jockey at the reins of a brown race horse running at full speed, its legs lifted off the ground, and two of its shoes flying through the air. The jockey grips the reins of the horse over which he is prone and suspended above. He exclaims in the vernacular, "I only ’plied jist six bottles of Kendall’s Spavin Cure...so he can go in 2:05 3-8. Gwine to put on two bottles more, and den he can go in jist 1:51 7-16." The jockey is attired in a red buttoned jacket and red plaid pants. His red and white striped jockey's cap and one of his black boots have flown off and trail behind him. In the background a wooden fence lines the grounds. An African American man with exaggarated features attired in blue pants and a red plaid shirt and with his mouth open and arms raised in alarm stands within the entryway to the fence. A wooden sign posted on the fence reads, "2.05 3/8." Burney James Kendall (1845-1922) founded the B.J. Kendall Company in Enosburg Falls, Vermont in 1879. Kendall Company was incorporated in 1883. The success of Kendall's Spavin Cure spurred the firms line of products to expand to proprietary medicines for other animals in addition to people. In the center, flanking a shield illustrated with thirteen ropes tied into a Gordian Knot are allegorical figures representing Liberty and Fame. - Collection containing primarily engravings, watercolors, and drawings executed by English-born artist and engraver William Birch and his descendants between the 18th and later 19th century. Several of the graphic materials are by William Birch and represent engraved work he completed in Britain before 1794 and following his immigration to the United States that same year. His British work includes plates from his unpublished satiric volume “The Busy World, or London Dissected ...” (ca. 1792-ca. 1793) showing a charlatan at work, a fight between Richard Humphreys and Daniel Mendoza, a May Day procession, and rag dealers (P.2016.50.28-33); loose plates from his book of British landscapes “Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne” (1791) (P.2016.50.34, 36, 42); the rural and scenic “The Porcupine Inn Yard Rushmore Hill” (p.2016.50.38); the disaster print “The Great Fire of London in the Year 1666” (P.2016.50.55); and portraits of the poetical character Secander (P.2016.50.40) and his mentor “Sir Joshua Reynolds” (P.2016.50.22). His American work includes variant editions of plates from his “Views of Philadelphia” originally published as a series 1798-1800 (P.2016.62.21-37); variant editions of plates from his “Country Seats” originally published in 1808 (P.2016.62.38-45a); and the 1800 commemorative portrait “George Washington. Birch was also one of the most important landscape artists in America’s Federal period. He engraved and published the first viewbook of an American city, "The City of Philadelphia in the Year… 1800" and the respected "The Country Seats of the United States of North America" in 1804. His son Thomas Birch (1779-1851) assisted him in the drawing and engraving of his viewbooks. He became a respected artist in his own right and specialized in marine paintings.

- Boudoir card depicting a photographic reproduction of an allegorical Civil War painting by Paul Philippoteaux, possibly a panel from one of his four versions of "The Gettysburg Cyclorama." Shows a figure resembling General George McClellan pointing to Lincoln, his hand on his chest and standing on the steps of a pavilion. A white and African American man stand next to Lincoln. The pavilion is comprised of a tent adorned with ornate shields and stone columns marked "Union" and "Liberty." Urns rest atop the columns. Smoke rises from them. A large statue of the figure of Liberty rises over the pavilion. Inside the pavilion, men in suits sit at a long table at which two other men, one in shirt sleeves, stand and sign documents. A crowd of men stand behind and beside the table. Near the "Liberty" column in the right, a white man breaks the shackles of a male slave as armed African Americans rush by. Troops of soldiers march around the pavilion in front of cheering men, women, and children, including blacksmiths near an anvil, flags, and a shield in the right foreground. In the left foreground, an older man holds the reigns of a rider less grey horse next to a man astride a black horse. In the left background, the U.S. Capitol is visible and in the right background ironclads sail on the ocean. French artist Paul Phillipoteaux was commissioned to create the Gettysburg Cyclorama painting in 1879. Depicting Pickett's charge, he created four versions, with the first completed in 1883 and displayed in Chicago. The second version was first shown in Boston in 1884, with the third and fourth versions shown in Philadelphia and New York in 1886. Two of the four versions are known to be extant (Chicago and Boston). President Van Buren leads the pack cheering on his "old hickory nag," "Sub Treasury," named after his financial program, which allowed independent agencies to administer federal funds. Politicians following Van Buren include: bullionist Senator Thomas Hart Benton on "Specie Currency," his "golden poney" which carries "more weight than any of them"; Senators Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, leading opponents to Van Buren's fiscal policy, bickering over their shared horse named after the defunct "United States Bank"; South Carolina Senator John C. - Montage of five scenes from a "Hound and Hare Club of Germantown" meet at Wakefield Meadow, part of the estate of Thomas and Sarah Fisher near Germantown. Large central scene shows elegantly attired men, women, and children, a few astride horses, milling on the grounds near the old residence, pond and creek. Surrounding scenes show horsemen galloping on the grounds, over fences, and in front of distant crowds of on-lookers standing in front of the dwelling. Dwelling built circa 1795. The meet involved horsemen acting as "hounds" and "hares" through horns and pieces of paper. The riders were tracked by their fellow mounted clubmen.
