Henry Askin, was built in 1867 on hundreds of acres of land along the Lancaster Pike and the Pennsylvania Railroad in Wayne, Pa. The residence contained eighty rooms, was powered with gas retorts, and received water from a reservoir erected on a neighboring hill. The estate also sustained a green house; conservatory; farm; a public lecture hall, library, and place of worship; as well as landscaped lawns and flower gardens. In 1880, Askin sold the property to Philadelphia editor George Childs and banker Anthony J. Drexel for development into the Wayne Estates. The Louella residence was later used as a summer resort hotel, school for girls, and apartments.

Description: Advertisement showing the busy forge shop of "Henry Beagle's Hame Manufactory" on the 400 block of Magnolia Street. Within the shop, laborers enter the doorway, toil at windows, and hoist a bundle of hames (i.e., part of the harness that fits around the neck of a draught horse through which the reigns pass). Outside of the building, other workers, including a boy, gather bundles of hames, transport the pieces by hand-drawn cart, and load them on to the back of a horse-drawn dray as a couple passes on the sidewalk. Several working smoke stacks adorn the roof of the shop and a couple passes on the sidewalk. In the street, a horse-drawn freight car travels. A lad leads the horses as the freight driver steers from within the front of the car. A small boy sits next to the driver who stands. Also shows neighboring buildings. Title: Lacey & Phillips
Description: Advertisement depicting William N. Lacey's and Samuel R. Phillips' busy four-story equestrian store at 12 South Fifth Street selling "ladies and gentlemen's saddles, single and double harnesses, and bridles and whips." Saddles, bridles, harnesses, and blankets are prominently displayed in the storefront window and on the building facade. On the upper floors, several white men employees work by open windows. Elegantly dressed, white men patrons converse near the entryway and four horses are lined up in the street awaiting and receiving service including a pair reined in by an African American man coach driver. Partial view of the adjacent building containing the carpenter, W.B. Morrell, is visible. Lacey and Phillips, established in 1845, remained at the site until 1854. The firm, known as the finest horse equipment makers in the world, won the first and only prize medal for harness at the World Fair in 1851 and a gold medal at the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in 1853. The South Fifth Street address was damaged by fire in 1854 and the firm relocated to larger facility at 14 and 16 South Seventh street in 1855. Lacey died in 1860 and the firm was renamed S.R. Phillips Company. Description: View of the prominent hotel erected in 1868 at 1500-1506 Chestnut Street. White men and women pedestrians stroll the sidewalk, and an African American man passes by on his horse-drawn cart. Businesses line Chestnut Street, including: George E. Dearborn, piano dealer; a paper hangings store; and a custom shirt proprietor. The hotel, named after the previously existing "Colonnade Row" of early nineteenth-century pillared, porched townhouses, was demolished in 1925 for the erection of the Franklin Trust Company building. Title: Kendall's Spavin Cure
Description: Trade card promoting B.J. Kendall Company, manufacturer of proprietary medicine, and depicting a racist caricature of an African American man jockey portrayed with exaggarated features. Shows the jockey at the reins of a brown race horse running at full speed, its legs lifted off the ground, and two of its shoes flying through the air. The jockey grips the reins of the horse over which he is prone and suspended above. He exclaims in the vernacular, "I only ’plied jist six bottles of Kendall’s Spavin Cure...so he can go in 2:05 3-8. Gwine to put on two bottles more, and den he can go in jist 1:51 7-16." The jockey is attired in a red buttoned jacket and red plaid pants. His red and white striped jockey's cap and one of his black boots have flown off and trail behind him. In the background a wooden fence lines the grounds. An African American man with exaggarated features attired in blue pants and a red plaid shirt and with his mouth open and arms raised in alarm stands within the entryway to the fence. A wooden sign posted on the fence reads, "2.05 3/8." Burney James Kendall (1845-1922) founded the B.J. Kendall Company in Enosburg Falls, Vermont in 1879. Kendall Company was incorporated in 1883.
