- Glass negative showing the Wissahickon Inn, a large multi-story building with multiple spires and chimneys seen from below. Willow Grove Avenue lined with trees and a lamppost travels up the hill toward the hotel. The Wissahickon Inn, a summer resort developed by Henry H. Houston (1820-1895), was built in 1884 after designs by George and William Hewitt. The hotel hosted the Philadelphia Cricket Club and the Philadelphia Horse Show. In 1898, Chestnut Hill Academy began using the hotel during the off-season. The hotel became known for proprietor Joseph Smith's prominently displayed hand-carved curios created from laurel root he gathered along the Wissahickon Creek. The Wissahickon Creek hostelry was reconstructed out of the log cabin built during William Henry Harrison's 1840 presidential campaign. The hotel fell into ruin following the loss of its liquor privileges and was razed in the late 19th century. - Advertisement showing the front facade of the five-story hotel with balcony built 1837 after the designs of William Strickland. The name of the proprietor "Sanderson," i.e., Joseph M. Sanderson, adorns the entranceway. Also shows the hat shop of Lazel Elmes tenanting the building later renumbered to 40-50 North Fourth Street. A display of hats adorns the doorway to the shop. Merchant's Hotel was a premier early 19th-century hotel visited by several presidents and used as James Buchanan’s presidential campaign headquarters in 1856.
