Description: Trade card-size advertising calendar containing illustration drawn by Frank Bellew and captioned "Ready-Acting Dog-Tail and Gun-Barrel Attachment." Shows a hunter, with a hunting basket containing a frog on his back, and his dog wearing the gun attachment "Invented by Donald Read" at a pond. The hunter holds a bullfrog in one hand and the trigger attachment in the other as the dog is aimed at a frog in the water. Title: "Creme" oat meal toilet soap
Description: Trade card promoting soap manufacturer J.D. Larkin & Co. and depicting a racist caricature of an anthropomorphized chimpanzee as a man hunter. He stands in front of a section of tall grass and holds a clutch of birds in his left hand and a rifle under his right arm. He is attired in a hunting cap, red jacket, tan pants, and black high boots. Leather straps are criss-crossed over his chest. J.D. Larkin & Co. was founded in 1875. By 1881 the soap company included over 100 factory workers and sustained specialized departments for advertising and shipping, as well as solicited to door-to-door private residences in addition to shopkeepers. Trade cards with the company logo were included with each box of soap. By 1885 the firm only directly sold their products to residential customers and was known for their premiums. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 15 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and an outdoor setting. Scenes surrounded by a border designed as tree branches and tools of the design trade, including rulers, scissors and protractors. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. At the center of the panel, two men stand showing their backs as they peer at the countryside from the curtained window. They are flanked by two groups conversing in the parlor. On the left side, a woman attired in a bonnet, long pleated shirtwaist, and white gloves stands in the middle of two men attired in long jackets, vests, and neck ties. The men on the right side wear the same style, while the woman wears a dress with a low cut neckline, gloves, and a small hat. Many of the depicted men have mustaches and or sideburns. Furniture in the parlor includes a high back chair, wing chair and an ottoman. Lower panel shows a beach scene and a hunting scene. Dividing the two are a man and a woman mounted on horses. Description: Featuring a model of a black man and a Spanish Chasseur in typical dress, the engraving helps shows how Spanish colonizers in St. Domingo trained blood-hounds to track and kill runaway slaves. As Rainsford explained, "With respect to the dogs their general mode of rearing was latterly in the following manner. From the time of their being taken from the dam, they were confined in a sort of kennel, or cage, where they were but sparingly fed upon small quantities of the blood of different animals. As they approached maturity, their keepers procured a figure roughly formed as a negro in wicker work, in the body of which were contained the blood and entails of beasts. This was exhibited before an upper part of the cage, and the food occasionally exposed as a temptation, which attracted the attention of the dogs to it as a source of the food they wanted. This was repeated often, so that the animals with rodoubled ferocity struggled against their confinement while in proportion to their impatience the figure was brought nearer, though yet out of their reach, and their food decreased, till at the last extremity of desperation, the keeper resigned the figure, well charged with the nauseous food before described, to their wishes. While they gorged themselves with the dreadful met, he and his colleagues caressed and encouraged them. Description: View showing visitors enjoying the public grounds of the Tamany Pea Shore Fishing Company, a social and sporting club founded by Philadelphia artisans in 1803 on the New Jersey Shore above Camden. People stroll on the veranda of the club house remodeled in 1832 and are visible in the upper-floor windows. The building, reflected in the water, is adorned with a flag and a weather-vane shaped as a fish. The kitchen building stands to the right of the main building. Between the two buildings, two men stand in front of a water pump. Couples stroll and an older man fishes on a wooden pier, to which a rowboat is tied, that stretches from the shore. In the right, a rowboat carrying seven passengers (5 men, 2 women) approaches a boy and a man preparing to fish next to their grounded rowboat on the riverbank.
