Description: Trade card promoting A. Colburn & Co.'s mustard and depicting a racist caricature of an young African girl riding an ostrich in a tropical setting. Description: Racist trade card promoting Frederick A. Rex & Company's Peerless Coffee and depicting a caricature of an African American man peddler standing on a stage. The man, attired in a blue plaid suit with gold buttons, a white shirt with an enormous collar around the neck, and black shoes, is portrayed with an oversized head and exaggerated features. He stands behind a small table on a stage, places his left hand on the table, raises his right hand in the air, and winks his left eye. In the right on the stage is top hat turned upside down with an orange cloth coming of out it. In the left leaning against the table is a green umbrella with a black handle. Frederick A. Rex (1850-1916) founded the Frederick A. Rex Company in the 1880s which manufactured coffee and tea. Description: Advertisement with heavy street activity showing the Harrison & Newhall Refinery, formerly the Penington Sugar Refinery. Refinery reestablished and expanded as the Harrison & Newhall Refinery circa 1855 at 409 Race Street. In front of the refinery, laborers load horse-drawn drays with barrels as another man in an apron leads another dray past the fenced northwest corner of Race and Crown streets (former residence of Edward Penington). At that corner, a man leans on a street lamp across from a man on horseback in the street and two street urchins on the sidewalk eyeing a well-dressed couple. At the other end of the street, a traffic jam occurs as the barrels on the dray of a rambunctious horse roll off the vehicle in front of a horse-drawn cart and omnibus. A horse-handler and displaced carriage driver discuss the accident in the street as a peddler, the possible cause of the commotion, nonchalantly carries a tray of wares on his head past the scene. Description: Proof print of advertisement containing an ornate border surrounding a central view of the exterior of the six-story brownstone and print shop owned by lithographer Haehnlen at 420 Library Street. Signage advertising the "lithographic establishment" adorns the doorway, front, and side of "Goldsmith’s Hall." Building also adorned with large display windows and an eagle above the entranceway. View includes street and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk, stand in doorways, and enter the shop. In the street, horse-drawn wagons and drays, including one hauling crates marked "J.H.," pass in the street near a man pushing a hand-cart loaded with crates. Shop included salesrooms and offices, a machine shop, a drying room, lithographic presses, and card, handbill, and pamphlet printing presses. Border composed of cards containing ornate letters spelling Haehnlen's name and examples of his genres of work, including portraiture, industrial views, and machine imagery. A covered pedestrian bridge marked with the name of the company connects the buildings that are surrounded by heavy street activity. Horse-drawn wagons, drays, and carts, including vehicles for L. Berges Dyeing & Printing and F. Schoettles Paper Box company, deliver and transport goods and merchandise among a couple on horsebacks, a carriage, buggy, and a "Bridesburg Richmond 1 Exchange" streetcar. Pedestrians also fill the sidewalks and street. A boy flies a kite near a gentleman tipping his hat to a woman and child. Laborers transport sacks over their shoulder and by pushing a handcart. A postman is on route to deliver mail across from a man accompanying another using a shoulder strap to carry a basket of rags. A lady peers into one of the several large front windows of Landenberger & Co. Around the corner, two other fashionable women promenade past crates lining the side of the older building. A cupola and an American flag adorn its roof., Around the corner of the newer building inscribed with the date the business was established, a man leads a bridled horse past a wood bin. Landenberger & Co. was the only Philadelphia factory in the late 1850s to produce hosiery, opera hoods, comforters, shawls, and scarves.
