Description: Advertisement showing the five-story brick and granite building adorned with a sign reading "Blacking" on its roof at 108, i.e., 138-140 North Front Street. A patron opens the entrance door of the storefront as he peers at a large illustrated print on display in an adjacent window. Above the window adorned with the print (illustrated with a man, boy, and dog), a couple is visible in an open double-sided glass door on the second floor. Contains captioned images of 66 types of men's and children's hats for the "Spring" season of 1876. Captions detail style, finish, and colors. In tribute to the upcoming Centennial Exhibition, vignettes at top depict Carpenters' Hall, Independence Hall, and a buffalo hunt. Building views inlcude pedestrian traffic. Description: Advertisement with much street activity showing the manufactory and warerooms operated 1856-1878 by Hess at 1434 Coates Street. At the "Penn Steam Marble Mantel Manufactory," a horse-drawn dray hauling a slab of marble marked "Eli Hess" enters the fenced yard lined with stones. Workers using upright sawing machines cuts slabs of marble within the workshop of the factory that is adorned with statuary on its roof. Patrons enter the adjacent three-story warerooms. Evergreen trees protected by iron-work fencing are visible near the entrance. Statuary in recesses, window shades marked with the business name, and a figure of William Penn mounted on the roof adorn the building. Description: Advertisement showing the Schweitzer and Grim brewery complex on the 1100 block of Columbia (i.e., Cecil B. Moore) Avenue. Complex includes a three and half–story red brick office building and shop with two adjacent entrances. A man enters one of the entrances, and at the other, two men shake hands while a couple approaches the walled entryway to an addition attached to the rear of the office. The addition also contains a roofed porch area. To the left, a two-horse team is visible at the opening of a passage in the wall that spreads between the brew house (left) and addition (right). A man with a child, and a couple, walk on the sidewalk near the passageway. A weather vane, smoke stacks, and slatted windows adorn the brew house. Smoke rises from the stacks and steam pours out of the window slats. Description: Trade card for Moras, a German-born lithographer who established his own firm in 1853 from which he retired in 1890. The firm continued to operate until the late 1890s. Contains two vignettes separated and bordered by Gothic details, vinery, and scrolls. Vignettes show a lithographer and a lithograph printing room. Lithographic artist uses a hand rest and draws on stone from a sketch displayed on his sketch table. Printing room scene shows printers at work, including rolling ink on stones on hand-presses, checking proof prints, and moving stones. Description: Advertisement containing a central interior view of the bustling manufactory bordered by several captioned vignettes of men and women at specific tasks, and the mechanisms used, in the manufacture of blank books. Central view depicts several woman at work seated at two tables in the center of the room surrounded by men at work stations lining the space lighted by windows in the right and rear of the area. Piles of pages of books rest in front of the workers. In the foreground, women sew as at the front end of the table as ladies at the rear toil at folding pages. At the work stations, rows of men work at finishing pages. In the background, men operate book presses and other machinery, and transport reams of papers near women folding pages below a loft. On the upper floor, men work at stations across from shelves of reams of paper as a boy carries a mound of book pages down the stairs to the lower floor. Also shows the walls adorned with a cabinet, posted papers, and a man's coat and hat. Work vignettes show "girls" sewing and folding pages and male employees rounding, stamping, gilding and extra finishing bindings, book pressing, cutting and operating large ruling and cutting machines.
