Pepper Brewery, originally established by Joseph Potts in 1774, was assumed by Henry Pepper & Son circa 1780. Smith, who joined in partnership with Pepper's sons and Frederick Seckel in 1837, gained sole proprietorship of the brewery in the mid 1850s.
