- Collection of billheads, dated between 1886 and 1899, containing decorative and ornate lettering, ornamented type, vignette illustrations, and pictorial details. Illustrations depict exteriors of storefronts and factories (some adorned in signage); mortars and pestles, including a trademark with an eagle perched on the tool; and an allegorical scene juxtaposing a mule caravan in tropical setting with a "Quinine Chemical Works." - Description
- Illustration on recto depicts a bird's eye view of Lauber's restaurant on the Centennial grounds in West Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. Includes pedestrians and horse-drawn coaches in the foreground. The Cenntenial, held in 1876, celebrated America’s one-hundredth anniversary of independence and showcased the strengths of the country’s industry, manufactures, agriculture, and art., Left vignette on verso shows three buildings comprising the Philip J. Lauber liquor and restaurant business at 24-26 South Fifth Street. The buildings, adorned with signage, include left to right: "Ph. Lauber Beer & Ale"; "Ph. Lauber Importer of Wines"; and "Ph. Lauber Restaurant" (partial view). Image also shows heavy street and pedestrian traffic. Men congregate at the doorway of the wine shop at which a horse-drawn cart loaded with wine barrels departs. A carriage, horse-drawn dray, men on horseback, and pedestrians travel in the street. Lauber added a restaurant to his business on Fifth Street circa 1877. - Description
- Illustrated metamorphic trade card and caricature includes two images with paragraphs of text describing each scene. When the card is folded, Senator Jones frowns and is unhappy that his wife did not use Noix de Coco and pushes away the baked goods to her surprise. When the card is opened, a smiling and happy Senator Jones holds a knife in preparation to cut the cake his wife made with Noix de Coco, which she happily displays for him to see. Satirizes Florida Senator Charles William Jones, who abandoned his position ca. 1885 because of mental illness. Warner & Merritt began importing fruit in Philadelphia ca. 1869 and were one of the largest firms importing West Indian fruit in the country by the time of their insolvency in 1884., Advertising text printed on verso promotes Noix de Coco as "the best desiccated cocoanut in the world" and safe for dyspeptics and invalids. - Includes one letterhead and four billheads. Billheads contain ornamented type, ornamental details, and an exterior view of the firm's storefront at 125 Market Street. View also shows pedestrian traffic in front of the store with large display windows and adorned in signage, including a promotion for "Holstein's Aromanna." Billheads also contain promotional text, and terms of purchase and liability. Letterhead contains vignette depicting a mortar and pestle and a list of the products manufactured by the firm, including Butterworth Pulmonic Syrup, S.C. Cure, and Corn Cure, and Hassinger's Buttter Color, and American Cattle Powder. Collection also contains one billhead for the precedessor firm Budd, Butterworth & McClure established in 1886. - Billheads containing vignette exterior view of the six-story building adorned in signage of the Philadelphia firm established circa 1868. A pyramid shaped display is visible in the lower floor show window. Also shows heavy street and pedestrian traffic, including a horse-drawn delivery wagon marked "Drugs." One of the prints also contains two "reduced copies of our beautiful large Chromo lithographs Show cards in six colors, handsomely framed in walnut and gilt, given away with the first order of the goods represented." The views show horses, cows, sheep, and pigs gathered in landscape settings near a railroad bridge and farm, and mountains and a lake. Billheads also contain "Terms," including claims policies and the honoring of retails prices, and a list of "Some of Our Other Specialties.", Engravers include Smith Bros., P.2011.46.10 completed in manuscript to C.N. - Ice scenes after the burning of the Jayne Building on March 5, 1872, Philadelphia
- Description
- Series of views entitled "Jaynes building after the fire" and "Scene in street the day after the burning of Dr. David Jayne's building." Views look east showing the rear elevation of the fire-ravaged Jayne building with ice hanging from its exterior. One image also shows buildings on the north and south sides of Carter's Alley, men standing with shovels on a mound of ice in the alley, and in the distant right background, a business sign for "trusses" at 220 Carter's Alley. Dr. David Jayne, a chemist and Philadelphia manufacturer of patent medicines, moved into an eight story building at 84-86 Chestnut Street (i.e., 242-244 Chestnut Street), between 2nd and 3rd Streets in 1850, after it was completed after designs by William J. Johnston and Thomas Ustick Walter. His business occupied the building until his death in 1866. - Trade card for the Philadelphia stove manufacturer showing an African American house cook showing off the households's new "Iron King" stove to a baker delivering pies. The woman in kerchief, shawl, checkered dress and apron points to the stove and states "No more of your pies. The Missus has one of dem Iron King Stove -Shure Baker" to the baker in a baker's hat, smock, apron, and holding a square basket of pies. A kettle, frying pan, pot, and dutch oven rest on the burners of the stove that is marked "Chas. Noble & Co., Philada." Scene also shows a partial view of the baker's delivery wagon (advertising pastry and bread) outside of the open kitchen door. - Small display card depicting a montage of children's and baby's faces, heads, and busts, including one African American child. Two children, prominently shown in the foreground, hold hands, and a cigar. Some children wear bonnets and ribbons on their heads. A few children wear outfits with lace collars and shoulder straps with bows. Most of the "little orphans" smile, while others cry and frown. Michel established his cigar business as a partnership in Decatur in 1858. He predominantly operated as a sole proprietor from 1863 to 1903.
