Collection title devised by cataloger., Lydia Estes Pinkham founded the company in 1873, and patented her best-known medicine, Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, in 1876. The company also produced Sanative Wash, Blood Purifier, and Liver Pills. It remained in the family until 1968, when it was sold to Cooper Laboratories of Connecticut., Contents: [1] Lydia E. Series of trade cards promoting the Domestic Sewing Machine Co. "Make no mistake you buy a domestic" depicts two white women, one tall and the other of short stature, who carry parasols and converse. "Wes don got de "domestic" we has!" depicts a racist, comic genre scene of an African American couple, portrayed in racist caricature with exaggerated features, who have acquired a sewing machine. In the center is a man and woman in a blue-colored cart being pulled by a galloping brown horse. The man, attired in a top hat; a blue jacket; a white collared shirt; and green checked pants, strains and leans forward as he holds the reins. The woman, attired in a yellow dress with black polka dots and a pink bonnet, leans back and exclaims in the vernacular that "wes don got the Domestic, we has!" She raises her left hand in the air and holds a white handkerchief. A sewing machine is visible inside the cart. In the far right a barefooted boy attired in a straw hat; a white collared shirt; and brown pants rolled up to his calves, possibly their displaced son, runs beside the wagon. In the top right corner is an inset illustration of a Domestic Sewing Machine Co.’s sewing machine. "Yes my father was a great antiquarian; where he studied antiquity" depicts a well-dressed, white man and woman couple standing on a veranda conversing. The next panel depicts an older white man carrying a sack on his back and picking through a barrel filled with straw and scrap metal with garbage strewn around on the ground. William S. Mack & Co. and N.S. Perkins founded the Domestic Sewing Machine Company in 1864 in Norwalk, Ohio. Stirling was also active in the Photo-Secession Movement and a member of several other clubs in addition to the "jaunters," including the Photographic Society of Philadelphia, the Pen and Pencil Club, and Manufacturer's Club. He was married to Anne J. Biddle, who also practiced photography. The couple had one son, Charles Biddle, who died in infancy.

Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive. Paragraphs of advertising text promote George Gill Green's "August Flower" as a "natural cathartic" that "corrects the acidity of the stomach," and "it is established fact in every town and village on this continent, that [Boschee's] German Syrup is the only remedy that has given satisfaction in severe cases of Lung Disease." Naturalized in 1856, Serz earned enough income from his trade to be taxed by the I.R.S. during the Civil War. During the 1870s, his bird's-eye print "Philadelphia and Environs" was advertised in the "Public Ledger" and he served as professor of drawing at the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music. Serz was also a president and secretary of the old Artists Club and member of several German societies, including the German Society of Pennsylvania. He died of a skull fracture in 1881.

Collection consists of approximately one hundred items, primarily advertising ephemera, relating to the Centennial Exhibition, held in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park in 1876 to celebrate America’s one-hundredth anniversary of independence and to showcase the strengths of the country’s industry, manufactures, agriculture, and art. Materials include circulars, price lists, advertising cards, stationery, and pamphlets for goods and services, including washboards, ironing tables, saws, springs, sewing machines, mills, mowers, reapers, horse shoes, and hotel accommodations. Other documents include souvenir view books and guidebooks for visitors, maps, a Centennial Board of Finance letterhead, a Centennial award seal, programs, and admission tickets. Several of the items contain illustrations, such as views of the Centennial buildings, and depictions of products. Some advertisements promote foreign businesses from countries, including Belgium, Russia, Great Britain, Holland, Austria, France, Germany, and Spain., Approximately seventeen of the items include manuscript annotations of dates (e.g. "11.2.76" and "Nov 9/76"), possibly made by Centennial visitors to record dates of attendance at the fair. Print depicting West Indian Black men cigarmakers, portrayed in racist caricature, and their English customers criticizing the use of tobacco and the corrupt nature of enslaved labor. The cigarmakers, attired in sarongs or loinclothes and some with caps, speak in the vernacular, "You mak'a nice ting for Massa Poodle to suck." They soak tobacco, which is dripping wet and giving off a stench, in a large barrel labeled "hospital tub," and in their own urine and vomit to produce "high flavored" cigars. In the left, a Black man vomits into a basin filled with tobacco leaves and says, "What a tink! de smell mak'a me sick." In the right, a man squats and urinates into another basin filled with tobacco. Cartoon satirizing Colonel Thomas B. Florence, the only successful Philadelphia Democrat in the Congressional race of 1858 despite his support of the recently defeated pro-slavery Lecompton Constitution advocated by President Buchanan ("Prince James"). Depicts Florence, with the head of a donkey, leading a funeral procession for the "dead" constitution. Richelderfer’s celluloid collars and cuffs and depicting racist caricatures of Chinese men laundry workers in shock when a white man holds up a box of celluloid collars and cuffs. When soiled simply rub with soap and water (hot or cold) used freely with a stiff brush. They are perspiration proof and are invaluable to travelers, saving all care of laundrying. Advice. In wearing the turn-down Collar, always slip the Necktie under the roll. Do not attempt to straighten the fold. The goods will give better satisfaction if the Separable Sleeve Button and Collar Button is used. Twist a small rubber elastic or chamois washer around the post of Sleeve Button to prevent possible rattling of Button, To remove Yellow Stains, which may come from long wearing, use Sapolio, Soap or Saleratus water or Celluline, which latter is a new preparation for cleansing Celluloid. Elaborate Centennial Exhibition commemorative print depicting an arched monument containing a central full-length portrait of George Washington surrounded by vignettes; allegorical figures; and religious quotes by the first president. Washington is depicted mounted on his horse. Arch is adorned with the names of the 38 states and is flanked by columns containing views representing the industries of the North, East, South, and West. Views show a white man laborer of the North chopping a tree at a waterfront, white women loom workers of the East, an overseer on horseback watching an enslaved African American man picking cotton in the South, and a white man farmer reaping his harvest with a horse-drawn plow in the West. Columns also contain allegorical figures to represent the years 1776 and 1876. Justice and Independence (depicted as white women and holding the Declaration), and a prostrate British soldier represent the year 1776 and Peace and Liberty (depicted as white woman and holding a "Ballot"), and a seated enslaved African American man free from his shackles represent the year 1876. Album of photographs documenting the Philadelphia, Middle, and Pittsburgh divisions of the Pennsylvania Railroad, incorporated in 1846. The consolidated company sought to build a trunk route from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh through the Allegheny mountains in order to compete with the Erie Canal for freight traffic. In 1854, rail passage through the Alleghenies via the "Horse Shoe Curve" was achieved and spurred the establishment and growth of the several towns depicted along the route.
