Description: Advertisement showing the three-and-one-half story storefront, covered in advertising text, on the 700 block of Market Street. Advertising reads "The Cheapest Wholesale & Retail Hat and Cap Manufactory in the World. Fashionable Styles. Caps. Hats." A male patron enters one of two open doorways to the establishment, in which a clerk surveys stacks of hats across from a flight of stairs. At the other end of the store, another clerk assists a patron, standing in front of a mirror, as he tries on hats next to shelves of merchandise. Between the entries, men's and boys' hats and caps adorn a display window flanked by cases of "hats" and "caps" displayed outside. Boxes, hats, and milliners at work, are visible at the upper windows. A large model hat and cap adorn the roof of the building. In the street, a horse-drawn dray is positioned to receive a delivery opposite a laborer retrieving a crate labeled "M. Dormitzen Middleton Sch. County" from the store cellar. Labeled crates line the sidewalk with addressees that include "Heitner & Shay Augusta Northumberland Co. Pa."; "T.L. Mitchell Jefferson Co. Pa."; "Young & Lee Allentown Pa."; "Geo. L. Description: Advertisement containing a montage of 5 views of the marble works established in 1855 at 2025 Market Street. Views are separated by borders comprised of filigree, mantles, and sculpture. Upper view shows the exterior of the three-story L-shaped factory.The factory is adorned with a balcony lined with statues, the roof figure of William Penn, and signage. Marble works, predominately monuments, fill the courtyard across from laborers working with a pile of marble slabs near a horse-drawn cart. Description: Advertisement showing the facility at Fountain Green (Fairmount Park) for the brewery established in 1844 by Charles Engel & Charles Wolf. Includes the wash house and entrance to the vault on the lowest level of the hill, the office (middle level), fermenting and brewing building, and storage house with fermenting cellar (upper level). Horse-drawn wagons loaded with barrels exit from different level entries to the buildings and a laborer working on a barrel toils within the brewery. Two gentlemen stand on the porch to the office and a woman with children uses the property for recreation. In the foreground, a Columbia and Philadelphia Railroad locomotive pulls a train car full of passengers, a double-decker horse-drawn omnibus travels, men ride on horseback, and individuals (woman with child and two men) stroll and descend the river embankment to greet a man arriving by rowboat. A weather vane designed as a beer barrel adorns the storage house. Engel & Wolf purchased Fountain Green in 1849 to dig lager beer vaults to ferment and age the beer brewed at Dillwyn Street. A third-story was added to the storage house after 1855 and the plant was remodeled in 1859. Title: Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co., office 2 Chestnut St., Philadelphia
Description: Exterior view of the terminal, factory complex and railyard adjacent to the piers and wharves at Greenwich Point along the Delaware River in South Philadelphia. Signage reading "Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." adorns the storage warehouse on the pier in the foreground, and "Office Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." is painted in large letters on a smaller building nearby. The on-deck rail carries cargo on tracks to and from docked ships into the second floor of a long building that sits behind Tygert-Allen's warehouse on the pier. Super phosphates storage, millroom, storeroom, engine house and boiler house are all located within the long building. Locomotives and carts full of freight travel along the railroad tracks that run parallel to the factory buildings. Workers and horse-drawn carts and coaches labor throughout the complex. A barge carrying railroad cars is docked in front of a slip labeled "P.R.R. Ferry". Several lines of elevated railroad tracks carrying carts and locomotives run next to the slip and into the distance. Steamboats with smoke billowing from the stacks and sailing vessels with men on deck approach the piers in the foreground. The Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co., formed by J.E. Tygert, H.S. Tygert and Penrose Allen about 1889, also operated an office at 2 Chestnut Street. Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view showing the Ridge Road entrance to the "John Baird," "Spring Garden Marble Mantle Manufactory" and "Steam Marble Works" erected in 1846. Works include a central courtyard, offices, and adjoining yard marked "Garden Statuary, Vases, Ornamental Sculpture, &c." that contains a variety of fountains, vases, and statues on the platform roof. A cupola adorns a rear building of the factory. In front of the courtyards, gravestones are displayed and workers move large slabs of marble with a lever and by dolly. Description: Keepsake print containing a rollicking view of members of the volunteer hose company racing their hose carriage around the corner from their firehouse at Tamany (i.e., Buttonwood) Street below York Avenue. Firefighters, most in gear, pull the carriage, run from behind the vehicle, and suit up in the entry to their firehouse. The house contains an iron-work verandah, and a tower from which a volunteer directs the company. Adjacent to the station house at the corner stands "Tamany Hall," an oyster house adorned in signage, including the name of proprietor "Jas. Griffiths" and street signs. The proprietor stands at his doorway, a server watches from outside, and a patron rushes out a rear entry. At the opposite corner, the grocery store of "Tunis O. Bancroft" stands. A female clerk stands in the doorway and merchandise displays, including brooms and buckets, line the storefront. The store owner, attired in an apron and top hat, stands out front, under an awning, and watches the commotion. Another hose carriage, ornately decorated, rests nearby in the street. A small toolbox, bucket, and sponge lie in the street next to the apparatus. View also shows the neighboring residential buildings on the block and around the corner. United States Hose Company was instituted on July 4, 1826 and incorporated on March 13, 1833. Baltimore held a Fireman's Celebration in cooperation with Washington D.C. in November 1851 that was attended by the United States Hose Company.
