View includes two men standing near several barrels lined in front of the brewery. Also shows adjacent and neighboring businesses, including partial views of a manufacturer and a shoe store. Pepper Brewery, originally established by Joseph Potts in 1774, was assumed by Henry Pepper & Son circa 1780. Smith, who joined in partnership with Pepper's sons and Frederick Seckel in 1837, gained sole proprietorship of the brewery in the mid 1850s. - Views looking east, one from Third Street, at the rear elevation of the fire-ravaged Jayne building with ice hanging from its exterior. One of the images includes a partial view of the cast iron front of 117 South Third Street in the foreground. Dr. David Jayne, a chemist and Philadelphia manufacturer of patent medicines, moved into an eight story building at 84-86 Chestnut Street (i.e., 242-244 Chestnut Street), between 2nd and 3rd Streets in 1850, after it was completed after designs by William J. Johnston and Thomas Ustick Walter. His business occupied the building until his death in 1866. It burned on March 5, 1872., Titles and photographer's imprint from manuscript notes on versos., Yellow mounts with rounded corners., Cataloging funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (PW-506-19-10), 2010-2012., Bell began his photographic career in 1848 working for his brother-in-law's daguerreotype studio in Philadelphia and thereafter was associated with many commercial studios as partner or sole proprietor. He served as the chief photographer for the U.S. Army Medical Museum in 1865 and replaced Timothy O'Sullivan on George M. Wheeler's survey of the territories west of the 100th meridian in 1872. He returned to Philadelphia, went into business with his future son-in-law William Rau in 1875, and was active in the photography community until his death in 1910.

- View showing the former coffee house and merchants' exchange. Shows building tenanted by Ulrich & Brother's Tobacco & Segar Store (100 Market). Crates stand piled near the entranceways and striped poles and window shutters adorn the building. Also shows the adjacent men's and boys' clothing stores operated by Philip Hunt (100 Market) and William Umberger (102 Market); merchandise on display; a handcart resting idle on Front Street; and a conestoga wagon parked near a pile of barrels on the sidewalk. Also shows a doll standing on one of the piles of crates in front of the tobacco store. Delivery wagons and drays traverse the business-lined streets, including one for Peck's driven by an African American man. Pedestrians walk the sidewalks and cross the intersection, and a boy rolls a hoop passed a female peddler sewing by her foodstand.
