Title: Locomotive steam engine of William Norris, Phila. Class B
Description: Shows the steam locomotive "Washington" built by the company started by William Norris and Col. Stephen H. Long in 1836. Locomotive contains a nameplate. Also includes a scale printed below the image. In July 1836, the "George Washington" hauled a load of 19,200 pounds at 15 miles per hour up the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad's inclined Belmont Plane. It was the first locomotive to ascend a hill on its own power. In 1837, the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railway assumed ownership of the machine. Description: Advertisement showing a view of the glue and animal product manufactories of Charles Baeder on a lot of land on the 1700 block of North Sixth Street. Includes the seven-story glue works with cupola and the smaller multi-story starch, hide whip, and curled hair factory. Two outbuildings with active smoke stacks stand between the factories. Trees and bushes are visible on the property. A horse-drawn cart travels in the foreground. The firm, established in 1828 by Baeder, became the premier manufacturer of its kind in the United States. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 17 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor, hunting setting. Upper panel shows four men, two women and three boys in a furnished parlor. All of the men are attired in long jackets, vests, cravats and patterned pants. Two hold or wear hats, and two hold canes. To the left, two men stand and converse with two women. The seated lady holds a fan and wears an evening dress, with a low, straight neckline. Her hair is styled in ringlets, and a flower rests behind her ear. The other woman adorns outerwear styled with a high-necked, tight-waisted dress, shawl and plumed bonnet. To the right, two men stand with three boys, who all wear flat caps. The boy on the left is dressed in an Eton suit, while the other two younger boys wear longer tunic suits. Description: Advertisement showing the facility at Fountain Green (Fairmount Park) for the brewery established in 1844 by Charles Engel & Charles Wolf. Includes the wash house and entrance to the vault on the lowest level of the hill, the office (middle level), fermenting and brewing building, and storage house with fermenting cellar (upper level). Horse-drawn wagons loaded with barrels exit from different level entries to the buildings and a laborer working on a barrel toils within the brewery. Two gentlemen stand on the porch to the office and a woman with children uses the property for recreation. In the foreground, a Columbia and Philadelphia Railroad locomotive pulls a train car full of passengers, a double-decker horse-drawn omnibus travels, men ride on horseback, and individuals (woman with child and two men) stroll and descend the river embankment to greet a man arriving by rowboat. A weather vane designed as a beer barrel adorns the storage house. Engel & Wolf purchased Fountain Green in 1849 to dig lager beer vaults to ferment and age the beer brewed at Dillwyn Street. Description: Advertisement showing the public bathhouse originally built 1826-1827 as a shop gallery after the designs of John Haviland at 615-619 Chestnut Street. Patrons enter one of the four arches to the visible interior of the arcade that contains stairs over a central enclosed space that is flanked by corridors of rooms. The front facade also contains statuary and advertising signs in two niches above gated cellar entrances to "D. Gibb, Franklin House." The signs promote the tenant oyster house. Also shows a boy posting a broadside on the building and a man and woman passerby. Kerrison operated the baths 1845-1849. Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront adorned with signage on the 100 block of North Sixth Street. Signage reads "Radiator Stoves Perpetual Ovens Backs & Jambs Vault & Hearth Grates. Metalic Roofing in Tin & Copper." A patron enters one of the two open entryways into the storefront that is lined with a wall of shelves holding merchandise. Clerks and employees are visible at the cellar entrance, second entry way across from the stairs to the second floor, and in the rear of the business. Pipes and stoves are displayed at the entryways. Title: Bergner & Engel's Brewery. Office, 412 Library Street. Brewery, 32d and Thompson Sts. Philadelphia Gustavus Bergner. Charles Engel
Description: Advertisement containing a view of the hectic brewery complex in Northwest Philadelphia, i.e. Brewerytown. Complex includes an office building and dwelling (right), two ice houses (built 1865 and 1871, left), brewery plant, sheds, and courtyard. Outside of the plant, several Bergner & Engel horse-drawn wagons loaded with barrels travel in the street. The vehicles pass carriages, a man on horseback, two unoccupied drivers consulting each other, and a man, probably a brewery worker, seated on barrels talking with a man, possibly a job seeker, who has a carpetbag and a dog at his side. On the sidewalk, women, children, and gentlemen stroll, as brewery laborers work around them. Men load a wagon with barrels from one of the ice houses, as others coordinate the wagons (two excited dogs at his sides), carry barrels, and calm a horse at the courtyard entrance. Near the entrance, Mr. Bergner stands outside his office by his parked carriage and listens to an employee. Barrels line the wall of the courtyard. Within the space, loaded company wagons arrive, idle wagons and crate beds are stored, and laborers move barrels, including one from a huge pile on the terrace of the keg washing room attached to the second ice house. Description: Advertisement showing the busy industrial complex established circa 1819 by Alfred Jenks and enlarged in 1853 on the east side of Richmond Street between Franklin & Locust streets in Bridesburg. A horse-drawn flatbed truck enters the courtyard of the U-shaped complex containing several buildings that are surrounded by wood fencing. Within the yard, clusters of workers transport boxes and planks of wood by hand near an unhitched wagon surrounded by crates. A carriage with driver waits near a smaller building, landscaped with trees and attached to one of the large workshops. Outside the complex, a driver handles a four-horse team plodding to pull a truck loaded with two large machines as other factory workers transport planks, carry crates, mill about with their tools, drive a dray, and stand at a shed facing the street. Horse-drawn wagons loaded with barrels exit from different level entries to the buildings and a laborer working on a barrel toils within the brewery. Title: Diploma of the Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society
Description: Fair certificate containing vignettes and scenes related to agriculture, horticulture, and industrial arts. At the top, a female allegorical figure, sits upon a rug-covered throne with her arms outstretched. She is flanked by symbols of agriculture, including wheat, farm produce, and livestock. On the sides, vignettes depict tools and products of the book arts and fine arts, a threshing machine, a steam locomotive, and stems of flowers, and a grape vine. At the bottom, a historical scene of Egyptians slaves, in front of the pyramids and under the view of an overseer, cutting wheat with sickles is contrasted to a farmer harvesting his field with a horse-drawn reaper. The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was founded in 1851 by representatives from 50 counties with the object to "foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." Description: Advertisement showing maritime traffic in front of the ice house and office of the ice company on the west side of the river. A horse-drawn wagon is visible near the buildings across from the area to pole the ice to shore. The poling space is comprised of grooves in and frames lining the river bank. In the background, the Sweet Briar mansion (built 1797) formerly owned by merchant Samuel Breck is visible on a hillside. Cows graze in the fenced pasture. The scene is depicted within a lithographed tromp l'oeil wood frame containing an inset of an exterior view of Peck's Works at Dock Street. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 15 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and a fair setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. Eight of the nine men are attired in jackets, vests, cravats, top hats and canes. Some wear plaid and striped pants. One man, seated with sheet music in his lap and a stringed instrument by his side, is attired in an elaborate silk robe. The remaining men, most standing, converse in groups and study framed images hanging on the wall. The left image is a landscape, and the right depicts a portrait of an older man. Lower panel shows the New York Crystal Palace, an exhibition building designed by Georg Carstensen and German architect Charles Gildemeister and constructed for the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in New York City in 1853. View includes foot, carriage, and omnibus traffic. Couples, children and dogs stroll the grounds. In the foreground, flanking the view of the exhibition building, are six figures, including a gentleman standing with his back shown, looking at a woman on a horse and a boy holding a watering can. The man is attired in a jacket, top hat and cane, and the boy wears a ruffled cape-like jacket, knickers and a cap. The woman, sitting sidesaddle, wears a dress, jacket, gloves and a plumed hat. On the right side, two men stand with a boy. All of them wear jackets, vests, cravats, patterned pants, boots and hats. One man holds a rifle in his left hand. Many of the depicted men have mustaches and or sideburns. New York's 1853 exhibition was held on the site now home to Bryant Park. Title: Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co., office 2 Chestnut St., Philadelphia
Description: Exterior view of the terminal, factory complex and railyard adjacent to the piers and wharves at Greenwich Point along the Delaware River in South Philadelphia. Signage reading "Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." adorns the storage warehouse on the pier in the foreground, and "Office Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." is painted in large letters on a smaller building nearby. The on-deck rail carries cargo on tracks to and from docked ships into the second floor of a long building that sits behind Tygert-Allen's warehouse on the pier. Super phosphates storage, millroom, storeroom, engine house and boiler house are all located within the long building. Locomotives and carts full of freight travel along the railroad tracks that run parallel to the factory buildings. Workers and horse-drawn carts and coaches labor throughout the complex. A barge carrying railroad cars is docked in front of a slip labeled "P.R.R. Ferry". Several lines of elevated railroad tracks carrying carts and locomotives run next to the slip and into the distance. Steamboats with smoke billowing from the stacks and sailing vessels with men on deck approach the piers in the foreground. The Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co., formed by J.E. Tygert, H.S. Tygert and Penrose Allen about 1889, also operated an office at 2 Chestnut Street.
