Description: Catalog, including section “New Electros of Vegetables for 1889,” of electrotype specimens for the premier Philadelphia horticultural engraver and lithographer containing images of flowers, plants, fruits, and vegetables. Varieties of flowers, plants, fruits, and vegetables represented include begonias, carnations, chrysanthemums, ferns, pansies, poppies, roses, verbena, corn, melons, lettuces, onions, peppers, pumpkins, squashes, and tomatoes. Illustrations include specimen numbers and prices (ranging from $.50-$10), and most include titles. Title: Abbott & Lawrence. Liberty Stove Works, Brown Street above Fourth St. Philada James J. Abbott. Archilus Lawrence
Description: Advertisement showing the stove works founded in 1851 on the 400 block of Brown Street in Northern Liberties. Works include a four-story building containing the "office" and adorned with a cupola, a large work yard, and a rear "Foundry." At the multi-story building, a laborer loads stoves that are lined on the sidewalk into a horse-drawn wagon under the eye of a man at the doorway. On the roof, two other men stand in the cupola that is adorned with a statue of Liberty. In the adjacent work yard, laborers shovel and pick at mounds of coal and bricks, and load and transport hand- and horse-drawn carts on the grounds and up a ramp leading to an opening in the foundry. Near the workers, a group of men, one leaning on a shovel convenes and two boys chase each other over a mound. On the sidewalk, men, women, and children pedestrians stroll past a street lamp, watch the workers, and converse near a dog sniffing a fire hydrant. In the street, drivers guide horse-drawn carts, a drayman travels, and a pedestrian crosses in the path of an "Abbott & Lawrence Liberty stove Works" wagon and speeding carriage occupied by a family of three. Street activity also includes a man on horse back, two dogs in a greeting stance, and two gentlemen engaged in conversation. Title: American Steel & Wire Company factory plant, Trenton, New Jersey
Description: Aerial views of the the American Steel and Wire Company plant. In 1848 John A. Roebling purchased a 25 acre site along the Delaware & Raritan Canal in Chambersburg (now a part of Trenton) for his wire rope business. Roebling designed the buildings and machinery and directed the company until his death in 1869, when his sons took over. The company manufactured wire rope and related products for suspension bridges, shipping, mining, construction (including the Panama Canal), electrical power transmission, cable cars, tramways, aircraft, submarine netting, musical instruments, elevators, logging and oil drilling. By World War I, the factory was the largest wire rope plant in the world and the company grew considerably in response to steadily increasing demands for its products. The company was a subsidiary of the U.S. Steel Corporation. Description: Trade card promoting Arbuckle's Ariosa Coffee. Depicts a racist caricature originally published in the satirical periodical “Judge” of an older African American woman and older, African American Deacon in conversation. The figures are portrayed with exaggerated facial features and speaking in the vernacular. They stand across from each other in a home setting. "Mrs. Johnson" is attired in a attired in a yellow apron over a black dress, a red vest, and an orange, head kerchief. She has a pipe in her mouth. "Deacon Smith" is attired in a top hat, blue coat over a white collared shirt with red bow tie, brown pants, black shoes, spectacles, and leans on a cane. Description: Racist trade card promoting the Wenck Perfume Manufacturing Company and depicting a caricature of an older African American man reading a notice on a country grocery store. Shows the man with a white beard and attired in a yellow brimmed hat, a long-sleeved red shirt, red and yellow pants with patches and held up by suspenders, and black shoes. He bends forward to read the sign on the boarded up, dilapidated store. It states in the vernacular that the Johnsing & Skinner Grocery is out of business and that, “Dem as owes de firm, will settle wid me--dey de firm owes will settle wid Skinner. G.W. Johnsing." The African American man is labeled as a creditor who says in the vernacular, “I’ll hab a hundred and fifty cents on de dollar, or I’ll lick de hul firm.” In the right, the man’s donkey is tied to an orange post behind him. In the background, fenced in fields and trees are visible. George J. Wenck founded the Wenck Perfumes Manufacturing Company in 1872. Shows the slim-legged figure composed of the head of a baby and a caricaturized body in minstrel attire of striped pantaloons and a cropped jacket with long tails. The minstrel holds up a circular-shaped sign through which his head pokes out. Tear marks surround the minstrel's face which is slightly turned to the left. Description: Advertisement containing a view of the company's oil storage facilities at Point Breeze on the Schuylkill River, a plan of the grounds by Hexamer, and text describing the facilities. View depicts sailing ships docked at the wharves adjoining the "refined" and "crude" oil warehouses. Horse-drawn carriages travel on River Road toward the wharves. Individuals mill along the banks and on the wharves. The "Garden Farm" is visible in the background. Hexamer plan contains 7 numbered buildings, including the oil warehouses, crude oil wharf, and office in addition to cooper shops, crude oil tanks, and the railroad. Also identifies the surrounding plots of land including, the Garden Farm, Empire Stores for Crude Oil, Farmland of the Atlantic Petroleum Storage Co., and B.J. Crew's Atlantic Petroleum Refinery. Advertising text promotes the experience and care of the "those having charge of the business" and the erection of "large and commodious" warehouses and docks. It describes the warehouses and docks of the "Crude and Refined Oil Departments," including their length, capacity, and construction. Text also describes the safety of the property from fire due to the separation of the warehouses, tanks and docks in addition to the beneficial proximity of the warehouses to the Pennsylvania Central, and Philadelphia and Erie railroads in allowing a direct connection to the oil regions of the West as well as preventing the loss and destruction of oil from leaks and the sun., Also contains a list of the company's board of directors and officers for 1866. Philadelphia members include James A. Wright, Wm. G. Warden, and Clement A. Griscom. Atlantic was founded by Charles Lockhart and William Warden in 1866 and renamed Atlantic Refining in 1870. The firm was purchased by John D.
