Title: [Dyottville Glass Works]
Description: View showing the Dyottville Glass Works, in Kensington along the bank of the Delaware River, purchased in the late 1810s by English-born boot black maker and patent medicine dealer Thomas Dyott. Shows several of the 50 buildings of the premier glass works, including the factory adorned with the sign "Dyottville Glass Works", farmhouses, and barns. Workers enter the factory and walk on the grounds. Also shows several skiffs docked in front of the complex. The works also had a butcher shop, bakery, and chapel. Originally established as the Kensington Glass Works in 1771 by Towars and Leacock, the Dyottville Glass Works manufactured vials, bottles, flask, demijohns, and "indispensable articles." Description: Satiric scene showing high society, i.e., "bon-ton" in a Philadelphia oyster cellar. A "gentleman" descends the stairwell to the swankly decorated cellar where a motley gathering of men drink, smoke, gossip, and suck oysters. An African American bartender serves drinks from decanters in the left of the image. The bar is adorned with a notice reading "City Privilege still without license." Another African American attends the oyster bar. Plates, crackers, salt, and vinegars line the edge. In the right of the image, a sick-faced patron wobbles and spills his drink next to a tall clock with a decorated face and the inscription "Music has charms." Title: Harrison's Handkerchief Extracts Apollos W. Harrison No. 10 South 7th Street Philadelphia
Description: Beautiful, elaborate advertisement for the Philadelphia perfumer and ink manufacturer showing a ballroom scene set within a monument designed as a stage surrounded by floral ornaments. Shows couples attired in evening wear introducing themselves, conversing, and dancing in the ballroom. Two women hold fans. Chandelier lampposts and red drapery frame the scene. Two archways showing vistas to outdoor sceneries of trees and urns of greenery flank the monument. Loose, bundled, and cornucopias of flowers, encase the monument. Also contains two poles entwined with banners on the outer sides. Banners are inscribed with the names of scented flowers, including camellia, lilac, magnolia, tea rose, sweet clover, patchouli, and musk. Title: Winter scene in Philadelphia Send for circulars
Description: Advertisement for Daniel Mershon's Sons heating and ventilating warehouse at 1203 Filbert Street. Shows busy street and pedestrian traffic in front of the four-story red brick warehouse heavily adorned with signage and a "Russian Heater Works" flag at the northwest corner of Twelfth and Filbert streets. Signs advertising patent airtight heaters, grates, registers, ventilators, fireplace heaters, ranges, slate mantels, and house warming and cooking ranges are visible near the doorway and in the show windows of the storefront. Stoves, ranges, and fireplaces are displayed in the windows and on the sidewalk. Laborers load heating equipment into a store delivery wagon marked "Prepare for Winter" as a patron leaves the store near a policeman standing at the corner of the building. Several pedestrians wearing heavy coats, hats, and muffs walk in the street and on the sidewalks near several horse-drawn vehicles, including sleighs and a "Twelfth Street Passenger Railway" streetcar. Title: Diploma of the Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society
Description: Fair certificate containing vignettes and scenes related to agriculture, horticulture, and industrial arts. At the top, a female allegorical figure, sits upon a rug-covered throne with her arms outstretched. She is flanked by symbols of agriculture, including wheat, farm produce, and livestock. On the sides, vignettes depict tools and products of the book arts and fine arts, a threshing machine, a steam locomotive, and stems of flowers, and a grape vine. At the bottom, a historical scene of Egyptians slaves, in front of the pyramids and under the view of an overseer, cutting wheat with sickles is contrasted to a farmer harvesting his field with a horse-drawn reaper. The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was founded in 1851 by representatives from 50 counties with the object to "foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." Description: Advertisement showing an exterior view of the brewery complex operated as Peter Schemm & Son 1887-1908 that was originally built in 1855 and expanded between 1885 and 1887. The depicted red brick buildings include the brew house, storerooms, office building, and carriage house. The roofs are adorned with a cupola, smoke stacks, an American flag, and a weather vane. Description: Advertisement showing the storefront with large display windows of "Edward Roussel, Foreign Perfumery & Fancy Articles, French Perfumery, Mineral Water" at 114, i.e., 318 Chestnut Street. Within the store, a clerk serves mineral water to a couple at the counter. The woman sits, her parasol by her side as the man stands. Tall glass-door cabinets rise behind the clerk. At the "Penn Steam Marble Mantel Manufactory," a horse-drawn dray hauling a slab of marble marked "Eli Hess" enters the fenced yard lined with stones. Workers using upright sawing machines cuts slabs of marble within the workshop of the factory that is adorned with statuary on its roof. Patrons enter the adjacent three-story warerooms. Description: Civil war-era advertisement containing seven titled views promoting the manufactory (orginally established in 1836 as a foundry for castings) on the 400 block of Washington Avenue. Central view shows the "Front View" of the foundry. Soldiers march in front of the "Southwark Foundry" building that is adorned with signage advertising "Merrick & Sons Engineers & Machinests." An omnibus stops near the foundry to allow the passing of troops who are greeted by a small group of women. In the foreground, a six-horse team truck transports a large pipe, as behind it, a truck without a load follows. A family waits to cross the street because of the trucks. Description: Advertisement with heavy street activity showing the Harrison & Newhall Refinery, formerly the Penington Sugar Refinery. Refinery reestablished and expanded as the Harrison & Newhall Refinery circa 1855 at 409 Race Street. In front of the refinery, laborers load horse-drawn drays with barrels as another man in an apron leads another dray past the fenced northwest corner of Race and Crown streets (former residence of Edward Penington). At that corner, a man leans on a street lamp across from a man on horseback in the street and two street urchins on the sidewalk eyeing a well-dressed couple. At the other end of the street, a traffic jam occurs as the barrels on the dray of a rambunctious horse roll off the vehicle in front of a horse-drawn cart and omnibus. A horse-handler and displaced carriage driver discuss the accident in the street as a peddler, the possible cause of the commotion, nonchalantly carries a tray of wares on his head past the scene. Stacks of books and eight busts of prominent literary figures, including Shakespeare, adorn the tops of the cases. A clerk works from within and patrons surround a U-shaped central book display that contains a "Gifts" case. Patrons include men, women, and children. The individuals receive assistance at the case, peruse books on the shelves, carry their purchases, converse, and make payment at the cashier booth. Description: Advertisement containing advertising text surrounded by an ornate flowery border. Border includes garlands of flowers in which classical female figures, an eagle, and wingless cherubs are intertwined. The female figures are partially clad in Roman garb and one represents a messenger through the embellishments of wings and a trumpet. The cherubs hold tubes of cream and ribbons adorned with the medallions of the "seven silver and two gold medals awarded by the institutes of Philadelphia New York and Boston." The eagle holds a medallion in his beak. Also contains four images of medals in the corners. Bazin served as the lab director for perfumer Eugene Roussel from circa 1840 to circa 1849 when he assumed proprietorship of the business. Bazin continued to use Roussel's name until circa 1853. Description: Advertisement showing the two Italianate-style buildings (1101-1103 Frankford, built 1851-1856, and 1045-1055 Frankford, built 1871) in Fishtown of the hosiery manufactory established in 1843. A covered pedestrian bridge marked with the name of the company connects the buildings that are surrounded by heavy street activity. Horse-drawn wagons, drays, and carts, including vehicles for L. Berges Dyeing & Printing and F. Schoettles Paper Box company, deliver and transport goods and merchandise among a couple on horsebacks, a carriage, buggy, and a "Bridesburg Richmond 1 Exchange" streetcar. Text promotes the stopping of "decay in the middle of decline, to preserve what is beautiful" through use of Haul's "Hair Restorative" that "stops the falling off of Hair, promotes the growth of it, vivifies the roots and the skin and gives a new vigor to hair."
