Title: Scenery on the Pennsylvania Railroad Album
Description: Album of photographs documenting the Philadelphia, Middle, and Pittsburgh divisions of the Pennsylvania Railroad, incorporated in 1846. The consolidated company sought to build a trunk route from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh through the Allegheny mountains in order to compete with the Erie Canal for freight traffic. In 1854, rail passage through the Alleghenies via the "Horse Shoe Curve" was achieved and spurred the establishment and growth of the several towns depicted along the route.

Description: Eccentrically-arranged scrapbook predominantly containing newspaper clippings, patent medicine almanac advertisements, and comic valentines. Also contains scraps, trade cards, and labels. Clippings, many published in the sensational periodicals “National Police Gazette” and “Days' Doings” primarily depict illustrations of murders and violence, crimes and punishments, human curiosities, animal attacks, human peril, women in distress, evocative theatrical performances, acts of daring, cross dressing and comic scenes in silhouette.

Description: Scrapbook of print specimens and proofs engraved by Philadelphia and London engraver William Humphrys. Contents include postage stamp proofs, book and periodical illustrations, tile pages, portrait prints, advertisements, and cut outs of banknote and certificate vignettes. Majority of graphics depict allegorical imagery or illustrations of genre, religious, sentimental, and literary scenes, some from the plays of Shakespeare. Illustrations include scenes of courtship; female friendship; children with animals; a ghoulish-looking woman with a torch; a European man smoking a hookah; Jesus Christ; Adam & Eve; and imagery from Edmund Spencer's "Faery Queen", John Milton's "Palemon's Story," and John Gay's "Thursday: or The Spell." Allegorical works depict the figures of Columbia, Minerva, Mercury, Neptune, Bounty, Agriculture, Commerce, Justice, Hope, and Apollo, as well as scenes with the American eagle; caducei for the "Liverpool Apothecaries Company"; citizens fighting a fire; cherubs charting a globe; Native Americans; a family; sailing ships; and symbols of farming, trade, and industry. Description: Advertisement showing a view of the glue and animal product manufactories of Charles Baeder on a lot of land on the 1700 block of North Sixth Street. Includes the seven-story glue works with cupola and the smaller multi-story starch, hide whip, and curled hair factory. Two outbuildings with active smoke stacks stand between the factories. Trees and bushes are visible on the property. A horse-drawn cart travels in the foreground. The firm, established in 1828 by Baeder, became the premier manufacturer of its kind in the United States. Title: Rae's Philadelphia Pictorial Directory & Panoramic Advertiser
Description: Folio volume of panoramic views of businesses on the 200-900 blocks of Chestnut Street and corresponding pages of advertisements. Also contains a preface, which details that inclusion in the directory required subscription to or purchase of the volume; the intention to "issue the Panoramic View annually"; and the publisher's endeavor to correct all lettering errors "upon the publication of the second edition." Volume also includes interspersed full-, half- and, one-third-page advertisements for business subscribers tenanting, as well as not located on Chestnut Street. Publisher issued only the 1851 directory.

Description: Calendar depicting scenes in the making and distribution of the "Buckeye" machinery produced by the Akron company founded in 1863. Front cover contains scene "Getting out Lumber for the World-famed Buckeye Binders and Mowers" showing a hunter and trapper watching oxen haul logs, loggers cut trees, and camp hands carry buckets and tend a dutch oven over a campfire. Internal views show "Receiving and Dressing Lumber for Buckeye Machines"; "Partial View of Wood Department Mammoth Buckeye Works, Akron, Ohio"; "Mining and Reducing the Ores for use in Buckeye Harvesting Machines"; "Partial view of Buckeye Foundry, Akron, Ohio"; "The Perfected Buckeye Binder and Mower, The World's Standard" and "Shipping the Celebrated Buckeye Machines to all parts of the civilized Globe." Illustrations depict seasonal, genre and landscape scenes, including a man fishing (July), a couple canoeing (August), ducks on promenade down a dirt path (September), a waterfall and winter scene near a homestead (October and November), and deers in a snow-covered forest (December). Promotional text describes the superiority of the McCormick mowers based on "Durability. Description: Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive. Paragraphs of advertising text promote George Gill Green's "August Flower" as a "natural cathartic" that "corrects the acidity of the stomach," and "it is established fact in every town and village on this continent, that [Boschee's] German Syrup is the only remedy that has given satisfaction in severe cases of Lung Disease." Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 15 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and a fair setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. Eight of the nine men are attired in jackets, vests, cravats, top hats and canes. Some wear plaid and striped pants. One man, seated with sheet music in his lap and a stringed instrument by his side, is attired in an elaborate silk robe. The remaining men, most standing, converse in groups and study framed images hanging on the wall. The left image is a landscape, and the right depicts a portrait of an older man. Lower panel shows the New York Crystal Palace, an exhibition building designed by Georg Carstensen and German architect Charles Gildemeister and constructed for the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in New York City in 1853. View includes foot, carriage, and omnibus traffic. Couples, children and dogs stroll the grounds. In the foreground, flanking the view of the exhibition building, are six figures, including a gentleman standing with his back shown, looking at a woman on a horse and a boy holding a watering can. The man is attired in a jacket, top hat and cane, and the boy wears a ruffled cape-like jacket, knickers and a cap. The woman, sitting sidesaddle, wears a dress, jacket, gloves and a plumed hat. A patron enters one of the two open entryways into the storefront that is lined with a wall of shelves holding merchandise. Title: Scene in a Lynchburg tobacco factory
Description: Illustration is included in Chapter LXI, "A Visit to Lynchburg in Virginia," and corresponds with the following passage, which clearly aims to present the tobacco factories in a positive, and even romantic light: "It [Lynchburg] has thirty-five tobacco factories, employing great numbers of negroes, men, women, and children. These negroes earn good wages, work faithfully, and turn out vast quantities of the black, ugly compound known as "plug," which has enslaved so many thousands, and promoted such a sublime disregard for the proprieties in the matter of expectoration. . . . In the maufacturies the negro is the same cheery, capricious being that one finds him in the cotton or sugar-cane fields; he sings quaintly over his toil, and seems entirely devoid of the sullen ambition which many of our Northern factory laborers exhibit. The men and women working around the tables in the basements of the Lynchburg tobacco establishments croon eccentric hymns in concert all day long; and their little children, laboring before they are hardly large enough to go alon, join in the refrains."
