Title: Jacob Haehnlen's lithographic & steam powered letter press printing rooms
Description: Proof print of advertisement containing an ornate border surrounding a central view of the exterior of the six-story brownstone and print shop owned by lithographer Haehnlen at 420 Library Street. Signage advertising the "lithographic establishment" adorns the doorway, front, and side of "Goldsmith’s Hall." Building also adorned with large display windows and an eagle above the entranceway. View includes street and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk, stand in doorways, and enter the shop. In the street, horse-drawn wagons and drays, including one hauling crates marked "J.H.," pass in the street near a man pushing a hand-cart loaded with crates. Shop included salesrooms and offices, a machine shop, a drying room, lithographic presses, and card, handbill, and pamphlet printing presses. Border composed of cards containing ornate letters spelling Haehnlen's name and examples of his genres of work, including portraiture, industrial views, and machine imagery. Haehnlen established his own studio at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1866 and operated his business from all but the first floor. He sold his shop to the firm Lehman & Bolton in 1870. Description: Advertisement containing a central interior view of the bustling manufactory bordered by several captioned vignettes of men and women at specific tasks, and the mechanisms used, in the manufacture of blank books. Central view depicts several woman at work seated at two tables in the center of the room surrounded by men at work stations lining the space lighted by windows in the right and rear of the area. Piles of pages of books rest in front of the workers. In the foreground, women sew as at the front end of the table as ladies at the rear toil at folding pages. At the work stations, rows of men work at finishing pages. In the background, men operate book presses and other machinery, and transport reams of papers near women folding pages below a loft. On the upper floor, men work at stations across from shelves of reams of paper as a boy carries a mound of book pages down the stairs to the lower floor. Also shows the walls adorned with a cabinet, posted papers, and a man's coat and hat. Work vignettes show "girls" sewing and folding pages and male employees rounding, stamping, gilding and extra finishing bindings, book pressing, cutting and operating large ruling and cutting machines. Other vignettes show a board cutting machine; Sewing bench; Bookbinders plough; a display of a pile of blank books and associated writing materials; and a view of the Smith & Co. storefront (500 block of Market Street) at which patrons stand in a doorway across from a crate covered with books., Also contains several lines of advertising text describing the several types of merchandise "which will be sold at very low prices." Description: Trade card for Moras, a German-born lithographer who established his own firm in 1853 from which he retired in 1890. The firm continued to operate until the late 1890s. Contains two vignettes separated and bordered by Gothic details, vinery, and scrolls. Vignettes show a lithographer and a lithograph printing room. Lithographic artist uses a hand rest and draws on stone from a sketch displayed on his sketch table. Printing room scene shows printers at work, including rolling ink on stones on hand-presses, checking proof prints, and moving stones. Description: Advertisement showing a northeast view of the two and one-half story storefront, covered in signage at 242 (i.e., 600 block) of Arch Street). Signage advertises "William Cansler. An extensive assortment of French and American Paper Hangings for Parlors Entries, Dining Rooms, Halls &c of Modern Style Fire Screens" and "Paper Hanging Warehouse." A couple enters the entry to the storefront between showcase windows displaying large wall paper samples. At the side of the building, a man walks past an advertising pole reading "Paper Hangings.
