Description: Trade card for the small portable washing machine invented by George D. Ferris and marketed by Johnston Bros., "General Agents for the United States." Depicts two male fairies, one white and one African American, presenting a "Missouri Steam Washer. Pat'd. May 1, 1883" to a white woman who stands over a washboard in a wash tub. Steam rises from the tub filled with clothes. The African American fairy, portrayed in racist caricature with orange wings and attired in blue pants with suspenders, pushes in the metal washing machine on a dolly, while the other fairy points to it. Title: World's Dispensary Medical Association. Proprietors of Dr. Pierce's family medicines. Buffalo, N.Y
Description: Letterhead containing a montage of images, including an exterior view of the dispensary factory, the company trademark, and pictorial details. Exterior view also shows street and pedestrian traffic, including horse-drawn carriages. Trademark shows Asclepius standing on a globe. Details include a palm leaf. Dr. Ray Pierce, a Buffalo eclectic medical doctor, had from the late 1860s been manufacturing patent medicines, such as Dr. Pierce’s smart weed and pleasant pellets. He organized a dispensary of “medical gentlemen” in 1873 and in 1878 opened The Invalids' and Tourists' Hotel in Buffalo for the treatment of chronic diseases. Title: Works, East Schuylkill Falls. Powers & Weightman, manufacturing chemists, Philadelphia. Established 1818 Tartaric and citric acid department, Falls of Schuylkill. ; Laboratory for fine chemicals, Ninth and Parrish Streets
Description: View showing the laboratory complex of processing plants and storage sheds established in 1848 on Ridge Avenue near Schuylkill Falls (i.e., East Falls). Within the complex, laborers haul goods by horse among the several buildings, smoke stacks, and trees. Men and women converse near the entrance to the complex in the foreground, as a horse-drawn cart exits the compound. In the background, a locomotive travels past the complex (right) and a laborer works with a team of horses that pull several railroad carts loaded with goods (left) on the series of tracks surrounding the complex. View also shows adjacent lots of pasture land. In the lower corners are two vignettes depicting exterior views of the tartaric and citric acid department and the laboratory for fine chemicals at Ninth and Parrish Streets. In 1847, Powers & Weightman succeeded Farr & Kunzi (established in 1818), and became internationally renown for their manufacture of medicinal and other fine chemicals. Description: Racist advertisement promoting Wootten’s Excelsior Stove Lustre and depicting an African American man, portrayed in caricature, polishing a stove. Shows the African American man servant, barefoot and attired in a plaid, collared shirt and pants, kneeling before a stove with a brush in his left hand. On the floor in front of him is a glass of water, an open can of polish, and a box labeled, Wootten’s Excelsior Stove Lustre or Pure Black Lead. In the right, a white woman stands wearing her brown hair in a bun and attired in an off-the-shoulder dress with a bow at the chest and lace sleeves. She looks toward the man and asks, “Uncle Tom whose blacking is that you are useing [sic].” He replies in the vernacular, “La Missey don’t you know dat -- dat is Wooten's Lustre." Description: Racist trade card promoting stove manufacturer Cribben, Sexton & Co. and depicting a genre scene with African American caricatures originally created for Harper’s Weekly in 1878 by Sol Eytinge that satirized the courtship and marriage of and the start of families by "The Twins." Figures are portrayed with exaggerated features. Shows the two couples sitting in wooden chairs. The twin sisters are identically attired in yellow dresses with red polka dots and white collars. In the left one sister holds a fan as she coyly looks and smiles to the man seated to her right. He is attired in black shoes; blue and white striped pants; a white collared shirt with red tie; and a green jacket. His hands are on on his knees. In the right the other sister touches her chin with her finger as she leans towards the man seated opposite her. Her suitor is attired in black shoes; red and white striped pants; a white shirt; and a black jacket with tails. In the center behind the couples is a mantel with cups, plates, and bowls placed on top. Inside the mantel is a stove with a kettle on it. In the right background, the parents of the twins are sitting in chairs. The father, attired in a blue jacket and beige pants, reads a newspaper. The mother is attired in a red dress. Description: Advertisement looking down the alley way of the brewery, also known as Eagle Brewery, established in 1829. Includes the "Pale Ale Brewery Counting House" (left) and adjoining and adjacent processing buildings. In the foreground, within the doorway of the red brick counting house, a clerk interacts with a drayman. The brewery employee hands the driver a small piece of paper as the deliveryman also holds the reigns of his horse harnessed to a dray loaded with beer barrels. The horse wears blinders. Behind the clerk, a gentleman holding a mug of beer stands with another man in the doorway. In the alley, laborers, some in aprons, transport barrels out off a three-archway storage building, pause near a dray loaded with barrels, and stand by a row of barrels near a doorway of a building opposite the counting house. Description: Aerial views of William Cramp & Sons shipyard and shipbuilding facilities located on the waterfront in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia along the Delaware River. The yard was open from 1830-1927. It reopened briefly in 1941 to produce warships. This set of images includes distant views showing the entire facility from a higher altitude as well as close-up views showing ships, railroad tracks and other details of the industrial site and adjacent neighborhood. Illustrations include Christmas and Independence Day imagery and depict children performing a variety of activities, including picking apples, playing and pulling a Christmas tree in the snow, smelling flowers, acting, and diving.
