Title: Green's August Flower and Boschee's German Syrup. Portfolio of views in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia Presented by R.D. Pulford, druggist, Mineral Point, Wis
Description: Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive. Description: Advertisement for S.F. Jacoby & Co. containing a montage of three titled views showing the sites involved in its marble manufacturing operations. The scenes are separated and surrounded by an ornate border comprised of patriotic imagery on top, including an eagle clutching the American flag and shield near a bust of George Washington and the state seals of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts; filigree, foliage, and tassels decorate the central portion, where putti hold up a banner displaying the title of the central view; and a lion-mouth fountain adorns the bottom portion of the border. Description: Advertisement showing the busy "Pier 45" and factory of the firm at North Delaware Avenue. On the pier, laborers drive loaded and empty horse-drawn carts, unload sand from a barge, operate hoists from within sheds, and work on a raised platform between warehouses marked "Sand." Boatmen and workers operate equipment and perform manual labor on barges and boats, most with visible names, surrounding the pier. Names include Walter C. of Burlington, Sherman, Wilson, Willie Paxson of Philadelphia, Minerva, Samuel Miller, Estelle (built by Pusey & Jones, delivered 1884 to Paxson), and Saml. C. Bougher. In the background, the factory buildings, connected by an overpass, are visible neighbored by the B&O and P.R.R. freight depots, a pier covered in barrels and bales of wood, and other surrounding buildings. Description: Advertisement containing a view of the busy foundry in a trompe l'oeil frame. Shows a gentleman, possibly the proprietor, leaving the door of the office connected to the large workshop in which laborers toil on machine parts. A boy carrying a small part walks toward the gentleman. He passes two men talking at the corner of the small office building near the side of the workshop lined by factory debris. On the sidewalk, laborers finish a large gear propped up on a platform. The men are surrounded by machine parts that lie on the ground and line the outside of another factory building. Nearby, two workers with crowbars and a piece of cylinder await a horse-drawn cart being backed up to the curb by a driver. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story hotel built by John L. Ridgway in 1844 at 181-183 (i.e., 517-519) Chestnut Street. Male and female guests sit under an awning on the front porch, enter the building, and stroll on the second floor balcony. Other patrons are visible, through the open windows and entrance, in the saloon and at the front desk. Curtains adorn several of the upper windows and rolled carpets are showcased in the display windows of the tenanting business of "J. & B. Orne." A couple approach the entrance of the adjacent storefront of "J. Sill & Co. Gloves. Hosiery. Cravats. Shirts. etc." at 185 (i.e., 521) Chestnut Street. Hosiery and bolts of fabric adorn the display windows of the building that also contains columns and a balcony. Description: Keepsake print containing a rollicking view of members of the volunteer hose company racing their hose carriage around the corner from their firehouse at Tamany (i.e., Buttonwood) Street below York Avenue. Firefighters, most in gear, pull the carriage, run from behind the vehicle, and suit up in the entry to their firehouse. The house contains an iron-work verandah, and a tower from which a volunteer directs the company. Adjacent to the station house at the corner stands "Tamany Hall," an oyster house adorned in signage, including the name of proprietor "Jas. Griffiths" and street signs. The proprietor stands at his doorway, a server watches from outside, and a patron rushes out a rear entry. At the opposite corner, the grocery store of "Tunis O. Bancroft" stands. A female clerk stands in the doorway and merchandise displays, including brooms and buckets, line the storefront. The store owner, attired in an apron and top hat, stands out front, under an awning, and watches the commotion. Another hose carriage, ornately decorated, rests nearby in the street. A small toolbox, bucket, and sponge lie in the street next to the apparatus. View also shows the neighboring residential buildings on the block and around the corner. United States Hose Company was instituted on July 4, 1826 and incorporated on March 13, 1833. Baltimore held a Fireman's Celebration in cooperation with Washington D.C. in November 1851 that was attended by the United States Hose Company. Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront, with decorative masonry, for "George Mecke's Northern Cabinet Ware-Rooms and Furniture Ware Rooms" on Second Street between Noble and Green streets (i.e., 500 block). At the ground floor, a couple enters one of the two entranceways of the building. Furniture, including a side table, chaise lounge, armoire, and rocker are visible at the entrances, display window, and within the store. A woman, in a shawl, and holding a parasol approaches the chairs displayed at the second entrance. She stands across from two clerks retrieving a chair from the cellar to be loaded onto a "G. Mecke No. 355" horse-drawn cart parked in the street. The cart already contains a chest of drawers. Additional cabinetry, including chairs and a bed frame, and a worker are seen in the upper floor windows. Title: H. S. Tarr's marble yard, no. 274 Green St. above Seventh Philadelphia Pa
Description: Advertisement showing a view of the marble yard fronted by a triple arch adorned with plaques, the adjoining three-story office building, and rear factory of the establishment at Green Street above 7th Street. From the sidewalk, decorated as black and white tile, a lady, holding a parasol, and a gentleman admire several ornate obelisks and monuments within the fenced, arched yard. Several of the pieces are adorned with patriotic details, urns, and statuary. Plaques on the arches include the name of the business in addition to text reading "Every Description of Monumental Works Executed" and "Plain & Carved Mantels of Every Description." Under the third arch and entrance to the yard, a clerk and patron talk near slabs of marble propped against the wall of the office building. Behind the men, a laborer hauls a large monument by a dolly into the factory yard. More monuments, including animal sculpture and statuary, are displayed in the fenced court, upper balcony, and Gothic-style windows of the adjacent office building. A female patron walks between the marble pieces down a pathway toward a clerk standing at the entrance. An American eagle sculpture adorns the arches and an American flag adorns the office. Title: Dr. George Stuart's botanical syrup and vegetable pills, the greatest family medicine in the world Laboratory no. 254, Race St. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view of the three-and-one-half story storefront on the 700 block of Race Street bordered by paragraphs of advertising text, including notice of prices that ranged from 25 cents to one dollar per box or bottle. Signage above the large central showcase window lists several diseases and ailments cured by "Dr. G. Stuart's Syrup and Vegetable Pills." Infirmities include consumption, dysentery, chills and fevers, piles, colds, coughs, bronchitis, "tumours," "erysipelas," neuralgia, and "general and nervous debility &c. &c." Shadowy views of branches, leaves, and decanters are visible in the window. Several male character types, of different ages, class, and ethnicity, holding banners inscribed with testimonials, gather around laborers loading a "Botanical [Syr]up" crate onto a horse-drawn wagon in front of the store. Figures include a dandy, Quaker, father and son, and a Native American, many of whom also hold bottles. The testimonials cite the customer's supplying of certificates of cure and their attesting to Dr. Stuart's syrup and pills as cures for cancer, dyspepsia, scrofula, and colds. In the foreground, visitors to the property partake of the grounds that are landscaped with trees and small gardens. Elegantly-attired men, women, and children stroll; appreciate the vista from benches and chairs; and enjoy refreshments at tables. Other patrons depart in horse-drawn carriages down a path that winds past the Belmont Water Works and Columbia Railroad Bridge. A train approaches the bridge. In the right background, the proposed Centennial Exhibition buildings, and grounds congested with visitors, are visible in West Fairmount Park. The Main Hall and Memorial Hall predominate. Description: Advertisement showing the stove works founded in 1851 on the 400 block of Brown Street in Northern Liberties. Works include a four-story building containing the "office" and adorned with a cupola, a large work yard, and a rear "Foundry." At the multi-story building, a laborer loads stoves that are lined on the sidewalk into a horse-drawn wagon under the eye of a man at the doorway. On the roof, two other men stand in the cupola that is adorned with a statue of Liberty. Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view of the busy courtyard of the "N.H. Graham & Cos. Curing, Packing & Smoking Establishment" on the 2000 block of Filbert Street. Horse-drawn wagons and drays enter and exit the yard between the stable and "Office" under an archway with the name of the business. The wagons are marked with the company name and the drays carry barrels marked with the name of their contents and recipient, including hams, beef, pork, and shoulders and "Miller & Brown, Packers, Cincinatti." Thornley Coffee Roaster & Spice Factory Southwark,” drawn by horse are parked in, and arrive and depart from around the factory, including the alley between the complex and a residence (Mrs. Smith). A laborer hoists a barrel up the front of the main building while in the street below another moves a sack from a pile of them marked “D&B.” Two marked barrels also appear in the pile. Sheds adjoin the main factory building, and workers are visible operating equipment within the structures.
