Top specimen contains a central vignette and three border vignettes adorned with ornamental details. Central vignette shows a semi-bare breasted Columbia with the shield of the United States and the American eagle. Border vignettes show classical-style portraits of a woman and girl, and an artist at an easel, and a lithographer drawing on stone. Lower specimen contains a central vignette and two border vignettes adorned with ornamental details. Central vignette shows a man sketching next to a tree at the bank of a river. Proof print of advertisement containing an ornate border surrounding a central view of the exterior of the six-story brownstone and print shop owned by lithographer Haehnlen at 420 Library Street. Signage advertising the "lithographic establishment" adorns the doorway, front, and side of "Goldsmith’s Hall." Building also adorned with large display windows and an eagle above the entranceway. View includes street and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk, stand in doorways, and enter the shop. In the street, horse-drawn wagons and drays, including one hauling crates marked "J.H.," pass in the street near a man pushing a hand-cart loaded with crates. Shop included salesrooms and offices, a machine shop, a drying room, lithographic presses, and card, handbill, and pamphlet printing presses. Border composed of cards containing ornate letters spelling Haehnlen's name and examples of his genres of work, including portraiture, industrial views, and machine imagery. Haehnlen established his own studio at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1866 and operated his business from all but the first floor. He sold his shop to the firm Lehman & Bolton in 1870. Advertisement showing the two Italianate-style buildings (1101-1103 Frankford, built 1851-1856, and 1045-1055 Frankford, built 1871) in Fishtown of the hosiery manufactory established in 1843. A covered pedestrian bridge marked with the name of the company connects the buildings that are surrounded by heavy street activity. Horse-drawn wagons, drays, and carts, including vehicles for L. Berges Dyeing & Printing and F. Schoettles Paper Box company, deliver and transport goods and merchandise among a couple on horsebacks, a carriage, buggy, and a "Bridesburg Richmond 1 Exchange" streetcar. Pedestrians also fill the sidewalks and street. A boy flies a kite near a gentleman tipping his hat to a woman and child. Laborers transport sacks over their shoulder and by pushing a handcart. A postman is on route to deliver mail across from a man accompanying another using a shoulder strap to carry a basket of rags. A lady peers into one of the several large front windows of Landenberger & Co. Around the corner, two other fashionable women promenade past crates lining the side of the older building. A cupola and an American flag adorn its roof., Around the corner of the newer building inscribed with the date the business was established, a man leads a bridled horse past a wood bin. Birds fly above the building adorned with a weather vane decorated with a sheep. Also contains two vignettes of the company seal printed below the image. Seal includes a crown and two eagles. Landenberger & Co. was the only Philadelphia factory in the late 1850s to produce hosiery, opera hoods, comforters, shawls, and scarves. The factory expanded in 1870 as a result of the massive increase in sales of hosiery and blankets spurred by the Civil War. Committee membership certificate containing six vignettes and two scenes related to ship building and the Sanitary Fair. Scenes at the top and bottom edges show ships under construction at dry dock and visitors entering the Union Avenue entrance of the fair. Ship building scene shows several ship builders at work in front of and on the hull of a ship at dry dock at the river. A completed ship on a floating dry dock and ships in the water complete the view. Scene also includes a large America Flag incorporated as a pictorial element from the bottom scene and the motto "The Wealth and the Strength of the Nation." The fair scene shows throngs of people entering the arch-shaped entrance to the central passage of the fair site at Logan Square. A large flag pole ascends from the building. Vignettes create a side border and depict workshop scenes of the different professions within ship building. Laborers form the hull of a rowboat, sand and shave wood planks and huge spars (i.e. masts), sew sails, blacksmith using an anvil and hot coal from a furnace, and craft parts of the rigging. Many of the scenes include the tools of the trade, raw materials, and views out of the open entryways of the workshops toward vessels on the river. Vignettes surrounded by scroll flourishes. Also includes the names of committee members by their profession - Ship Builders, Boat Builders, Ship Joiners, Ship Smiths, Spar Makers, Riggers, Block Makers, and Sail Makers. Majority of contents include several plates from Thomas Allom's "China: In a Series of Views,..." The materials contain patriotic, agricultural, and transportation vignettes, views of buildings, anaglyptography (i.e., medal engraving), allegorical figures, and Centennial Exhibition (1876) imagery. Sheet music covers, predominantly printed by Ehrgott & Fobriger, depict mainly genre and Civil War scenes, portraiture, including images of entertainers, and advertisements such as "Sewing Machine Polka." Work by the Cincinnati lithographers also include several book illustrations depicting Ohio and Cincinnati asylums, institutes, seminaries, and landmarks, as well as uncut sheets of views of cemetery monuments for "The Cincinnati Cemetery of Spring Grove..." Series of trade cards promoting J.&. P. Coats thread and depicting men, women and children performing a variety of activities with the thread, including a white girl swinging on a tree swing; a white man fishing in a stream while a white woman watches; and several white children pretending to be a horse team. Includes a large frog on a riverbank. "So do my sisters and my cousins and my aunts!" depicts an older white woman carrying packages. "Gulliver and the Lilliputians" based on Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels" shows an oversized Gulliver being tied down with thread by the Lilliputians. "That's the kind! Bring me some more" depicts an older white woman inspecting different colored spools of thread in a box held up by a white boy. "Ef dis don't fetch you nothing will" depicts an African American man and woman, portrayed in racist caricature, trying to tame a donkey. In the left, the woman, attired in a white bonnet with a red ribbon, a red shirt, a blue scarf, a yellow shirt, a white apron, and gray shoes, uses thread from an enormous J. & P. Coats spool to pull on the bridle on the donkey, who pulls back with its mouth open. Behind the donkey, the man stands, attired in a brown, brimmed hat, a red shirt, blue plaid pants, and blue shoes, who holds a rope in his left hand and scratches his head with his left hand. "We never fade!" depicts an African American boy, portrayed in racist caricature, sitting on an oversized spool of thread in a field. Shows the boy seated and with his legs straddling a giant spool of black thread. He says “we never fade!!” and points his finger at the sun, which has a face and a concerned expression with a downward turned mouth. The boy is barefoot and attired in a white collared shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows; a multi-colored tie and belt; and red pants rolled up to the knees. In the foreground, two black crows look at the thread. A house is visible in the right background., Brothers James Coats, Jr. (1803-1845) and Peter Coats (1808-1890) established the firm J.&P. Coats, a thread manufactory. Their brother Thomas Coats (1809-1883) joined the firm soon after. By 1840, three quarters of the British company’s business was with the United States. Trade card employing an African American Oscar Wilde caricature. Wilde toured the United States in 1882. The Wilde figure, wearing long hair and attired in blue knee breeches with red bows, a red jacket with tails, black socks, and gold slippers lectures to an audience of well-attired African American men and women. He stands at a table adorned with a piece of paper, a candle in a bottle, and a water glass containing a sunflower. To his left, an older frowning man sits with an umbrella between his knees on the stage, while in the first row, two women (one wearing a sunflower on her hat) swoon in front of a lanky man, standing, and looking moonfaced. Clarence Brooks established his varnish business in 1859 as Brooks and Fitzgerald, later Clarence Brooks & Co. Trade card issued during the Columbian Exposition of 1893 advertising Enterprise Mf'g Co. of Pa. "Enterprise Cherry Stoners." Contains an anachronistic scene including a caricaturized depiction of Continental Army officers. Depicts the officers eating pitted cherries from a pan under the Enterprise cherry stoner. A female cook carrying a basket of cherries addresses them. Another basket of cherries lay on the floor. Also contains a view of the Mines Building designed by S. S. Beman. Trade card issued during the Columbian Exposition of 1893 advertising Enterprise Mf'g Co. of Pa. "Enterprise bone, Shell and Corn Mills." Contains an anachronistic scene including a caricaturized depiction of William Penn's Treaty with the Indian Also contains a view of the Electrical Building designed by Van Brunt & Howe. The exposition held in Chicago May 1-October 30, 1898 celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. Enterprise Manufacturing Co. of Pa. was established in 1866., Advertising text printed on verso: Enterprise Bone, Shell and Corn mills. Two Styles. It is a well-known fact that Bone, Meal, Ground Shells, Cracked Corn, etc. are excellent for poultry. These mills are especially adapted to grinding Bones, Shells, Corn, Roots, Bark, Grain, Chicken Feed, etc. When it is considered that pure raw bone meal is one of the best fertilizers, they will soon pay for themselves for that purpose alone. The grinders are warranted as hard as and equal to hardened cast steel, and can be regulated to grind coarse or fine, by adjusting a thumb-screw near the centre of the fly-wheel. Description
Series of illustrated trade cards for products produced by Van Stans Stratena Co. in Philadelphia. One racist card entitled, "Great lecture on Van Stan's Stratena by Julius Augustus Cesar at Ethiopian Hall," after the 1878 Sol Eytinge illustration "Blackville, 1878" depicts an African American man, portrayed in racist caricature, lecturing on a stage in front of an audience of well-dressed African American men. The lecturer, attired in a brown jacket, a tan waistcoat, a white shirt with gold cuff links, a white bowtie, blue pants, and black shoes, leans on a wooden table labeled "Van Stan's Stratena." Rolls of paper stick out of his back pocket, and his upturned top hat is visible underneath the table. A decorative object advertising Stratena and a cup sit on the table. He speaks in the vernacular, "one drop of dis yere Stratena on de conscience of a politician will make him stick to his principles. One drop on de marriage certificate will prevent de divorce court from separating you from de wife of your bosom. Do you heah me! Gentlemen I am a talking." Other illustrations include a double-sided metamorphic trade card showing white women and children upset when their objects and toys are broken and happy after using Van Stans Stratena to repair them and, on the other side, two white men and a white woman cringing while taking a dose of cod liver oil, but smiling after taking Van Stan's Emulsion of Cod Liver Oil. Card shows two white boys' jackets glued together by Stratena after they sat in it. A white boy standing nearby laughs and says, "Ha! ha! ha! No use boys!!! Been sitting in Van Stan's Stratena. Ha! ha! Ha!!", Another series of illustrations entitled, "Marriage a-la-mode. Matter of money," "Marriage a-la-mode. The result," and "The marriage of the future," depicts a white man and woman couple being wed by a white man standing under a sign reading "License marriage fee. $1.00" and a dog standing behind the groom thinking, "I'll be dog-goned if this is anything more than a matter of cur-ency and my privileges are sure to be cur-tailed. Give him a bone." A subsequent scene shows the husband running away from his wife, two children and chaotic household. His wife runs after him with a frying pan as the toddler in the background cries, "Father dear father come home," and the baby, lying on the floor, cries "No one to love me." The final scene shows a wedding ceremony in the "Tabernacle hearts cemented" with the officiator standing before the bride and groom announcing, "with this Stratena I thee wed." The groom replies, "One consolation, if I ever break her heart, I can mend it with Van Stans Stratena." Racist trade card promoting the druggist J. Harley Compton and depicting a caricature of an older African American man reading a notice on a country grocery store. Shows the man with a white beard and attired in a yellow brimmed hat, a long-sleeved red shirt, yellow pants with patches and held up by suspenders, and black shoes. He bends forward to read the sign on the boarded up, dilapidated store. It states in the vernacular that the Johnsing & Skinner Grocery is out of business and that, “Dem as owes de firm, will settle wid me--dey de firm owes will settle wid Skinner. G.W. Johnsing." The African American man is labeled as a creditor who says in the vernacular, “I’ll hab a hundred and fifty cents on de dollar, or I’ll lick de hul firm.” Another sign on the building states, "10 miles to de post ofice (sic)." Trade card issued during the Columbian Exposition of 1893 advertising Enterprise Mf'g Co. of Pa. "cold handle sad irons." Contains an anachronistic historical scene captioned "Why Don't You Speak For Yourself John" including the notable Pilgrim couple Priscilla and John Alden. Scene shows John Alden beside a chair on which a jacket rests and behind Priscilla, attired in 19th-century like Pilgrim's attire, ironing a shirt on a table with an Enterprise sad iron. Also contains a view of the Italian Renaissance-style Woman's Building designed by Sophie Hayden. The exposition held in Chicago May 1-October 30, 1898 celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. Enterprise Manufacturing Co. of Pa. was established in 1866., Advertising text on verso: Enterprise Cold Handle Sad Irons. [Mrs. Potts' Patent.] These irons are so well and favorably known that we will refer but briefly to a few main points of superiority. They are ground by patented machinery, which makes every Iron true and the face of the Iron slightly convex, thus making ironing easier than with the old style flat irons. The detachable handles are walnut, excepting the lower part, which is a TINNED iron casting, called a stretcher; they do not become hot, need no holder of cloth, and fit naturally to the hand without straining the arm or wrist. Description
Collection of business correspondence dated between September 25, 1861 and February 11, 1885, including billheads, letterhead, a form letter, and a prices current (February 2, 1874) containing ornate typography and vignette illustrations. Billheads and price current contain variant views of the exterior of the firm's storefront. Majority also show laborers loading and unloading horse-drawn carts in front of the building and the storefront adorned with a flag on the roof reading "Importer & Jobber." Items billed include opium, gum arabic, Pears glycerine soap, Warner's Safe Cure, Ayer's Pectoral, and chrome yellow oil masury. Letterhead illustration shows a medieval apothecary in his laboratory. He uses a flume to stoke a fire while surrounded by pharmaceutical apparatus, including beakers, a distillery, and mortar and pestle. Other correspondence relates to receipt of payments. Series of illustrated trade cards for Samuel Shoneman's "button house" and ladies' trimmings store at 101 South Eleventh Street, later 1018 Chestnut Street, in Philadelphia. Illustrations depict sprays of flowers; flowers in a vase; children carrying a potted flowering plant; a girl picking and smelling flowers; putti; a boy straddling a music stand containing sheet music and playing the violin or fiddle; a male figure attired in a hat and ruffled collar standing near a scythe and hourglass holding a hoop through which a frog leaps; and a view showing the treaty made at the village of Shackamaxon (i.e. Penn Treaty Park, Kensington) on the Delaware River. Penn, surrounded by his delegates, negotiates with the Delaware Indian chief near a giant elm tree. Crates of goods are sat upon and displayed by the English delegation. The corporation (later known as Allied Chemical Corporation and then as the Allied Corporation) was formed in 1921 as an amalgamation of five of the largest U.S. chemical companies established in the 1800s. These views show what was originally the General Chemical sulfuric acid plant. The facility is shown from several angles, including vertical views from high altitude.
