Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront, with decorative masonry, for "George Mecke's Northern Cabinet Ware-Rooms and Furniture Ware Rooms" on Second Street between Noble and Green streets (i.e., 500 block). At the ground floor, a couple enters one of the two entranceways of the building. Furniture, including a side table, chaise lounge, armoire, and rocker are visible at the entrances, display window, and within the store. A woman, in a shawl, and holding a parasol approaches the chairs displayed at the second entrance. She stands across from two clerks retrieving a chair from the cellar to be loaded onto a "G. Mecke No. 355" horse-drawn cart parked in the street. The cart already contains a chest of drawers. Additional cabinetry, including chairs and a bed frame, and a worker are seen in the upper floor windows. Title: H. S. Tarr's marble yard, no. 274 Green St. above Seventh Philadelphia Pa
Description: Advertisement showing a view of the marble yard fronted by a triple arch adorned with plaques, the adjoining three-story office building, and rear factory of the establishment at Green Street above 7th Street. From the sidewalk, decorated as black and white tile, a lady, holding a parasol, and a gentleman admire several ornate obelisks and monuments within the fenced, arched yard. Several of the pieces are adorned with patriotic details, urns, and statuary. Plaques on the arches include the name of the business in addition to text reading "Every Description of Monumental Works Executed" and "Plain & Carved Mantels of Every Description." Under the third arch and entrance to the yard, a clerk and patron talk near slabs of marble propped against the wall of the office building. Behind the men, a laborer hauls a large monument by a dolly into the factory yard. Title: Dr. George Stuart's botanical syrup and vegetable pills, the greatest family medicine in the world Laboratory no. 254, Race St. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view of the three-and-one-half story storefront on the 700 block of Race Street bordered by paragraphs of advertising text, including notice of prices that ranged from 25 cents to one dollar per box or bottle. Signage above the large central showcase window lists several diseases and ailments cured by "Dr. G. Stuart's Syrup and Vegetable Pills." Infirmities include consumption, dysentery, chills and fevers, piles, colds, coughs, bronchitis, "tumours," "erysipelas," neuralgia, and "general and nervous debility &c. &c." Shadowy views of branches, leaves, and decanters are visible in the window. Several male character types, of different ages, class, and ethnicity, holding banners inscribed with testimonials, gather around laborers loading a "Botanical [Syr]up" crate onto a horse-drawn wagon in front of the store. Description: Lovely bird's eye view looking east toward the city from Belmont Mansion, the former estate of Judge Richard Peters. In the foreground, visitors to the property partake of the grounds that are landscaped with trees and small gardens. Elegantly-attired men, women, and children stroll; appreciate the vista from benches and chairs; and enjoy refreshments at tables. Other patrons depart in horse-drawn carriages down a path that winds past the Belmont Water Works and Columbia Railroad Bridge. A train approaches the bridge. In the right background, the proposed Centennial Exhibition buildings, and grounds congested with visitors, are visible in West Fairmount Park. The Main Hall and Memorial Hall predominate. Description: Racist advertisement promoting Wootten’s Excelsior Stove Lustre and depicting an African American man, portrayed in caricature, polishing a stove. Shows the African American man servant, barefoot and attired in a plaid, collared shirt and pants, kneeling before a stove with a brush in his left hand. On the floor in front of him is a glass of water, an open can of polish, and a box labeled, Wootten’s Excelsior Stove Lustre or Pure Black Lead. In the right, a white woman stands wearing her brown hair in a bun and attired in an off-the-shoulder dress with a bow at the chest and lace sleeves. She looks toward the man and asks, “Uncle Tom whose blacking is that you are useing [sic].” He replies in the vernacular, “La Missey don’t you know dat -- dat is Wooten's Lustre." Description: Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive. Title: In commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of American independence
Description: Elaborate Centennial Exhibition commemorative print depicting an arched monument containing a central full-length portrait of George Washington surrounded by vignettes; allegorical figures; and religious quotes by the first president. Washington is depicted mounted on his horse. Arch is adorned with the names of the 38 states and is flanked by columns containing views representing the industries of the North, East, South, and West. Views show a white man laborer of the North chopping a tree at a waterfront, white women loom workers of the East, an overseer on horseback watching an enslaved African American man picking cotton in the South, and a white man farmer reaping his harvest with a horse-drawn plow in the West. Title: Goodyears Rubber-Packing & Belting Company Warehouse 104 Chestnut St. Philada. Factory Newtown, Connecticut. Belting, packing, hose, clothing, druggist-articles, etc
Description: Advertisement showing the five-story offices and storefront known as the Girard Building (102-104, i.e., 306-308 Chestnut) tenanted by Goodyears, i.e., the Philadelphia warehouse of the New York Belting and Packing Company (104), "Peterson's Book Establishment," i.e., the store of publisher T.B. Peterson & Brothers, and C. J. Peterson, publisher of Peterson' Ladies national magazine (102). Lettering reading "Goodyears Rubber Packing & Belting Company" adorns the roof of the building. Through the open entryways and large display windows, clerks, patrons, and merchandise displays are visible in both stores. At Peterson's, clerks assist patrons with items from bookshelves surrounding the room in addition to a centrally located U-shaped display counter labeled "Peterson's Magazine." Stacks of books are displayed near the windows that contain promotions "Subscriptions for all Magazines" and "Chas. Dickens Complete Works." Description: Advertisement showing the five-story offices and storefront known as the Girard Building (102-104, i.e., 306-308 Chestnut) tenanted by Goodyears, i.e., the Philadelphia warehouse of the New York Belting and Packing Company (104) "Peterson's Book Establishment," i.e., the store of publisher T.B. Peterson & Brothers, and C. J. Peterson, publisher of Peterson' Ladies national magazine (102). At Peterson's, shadowy rows of books and folios, including one titled, "A. Kollner View Philadel," adorn the display windows flanking the closed entry. At Goodyears, a white man and woman couple is visible through the open entry, standing at a counter. A large model boot, and other shadowy merchandise adorn the display windows that are marked with the company trademark and read "Goodyears Patent." A white man with a cane and an excited white boy, near his mother, peer at the displays from the busy sidewalk., Other activity, on opposite ends of the sidewalk, includes a white man paying a white newsboy for a paper, gentlemen in conversation, and a white man, a book under his arm, strolling by. Between the storefronts, a white man descends stairs within a central entryway. In the street, a fancy coach occupied by a white lady and driven by an African American coachman travels past a mounted First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary member in full regalia in the direction of a drayman. The women passenger looks with an expression of disdain at the horse of the cavalryman and the white man laborer transporting rubber belting on his horse-drawn dray.
