Description: Advertisements for the late 19th-century Philadelphia lithographic firm, originally established as a blank book manufactory ca. 1874 by bookbinders and brothers John and August Hofstetter. Name of the establishment ornamented with pictorial details, including a landscape view, a book, and artist's brushes. Prints contain a sentimental and comic scene. Sentimental scene shows a peasant girl, accompanied by a dog, walking through the woods and knitting. Comic scene shows a gentleman, near a lake, inspecting his rear covered in paint in front of a bench adorned with the sign "Paint." Also includes the promotion "Color Work a Specialty." Title: Murphy & Allison Car builders. 1908 Market Street, Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the busy "Car Factory & Bolt Nut & Washer Works," of John Murphy and J. C. Allison, also proprietors of the Girard Tube Works, who established a partnership in 1851 at 1908 Market Street. A completed rail car and a horse-drawn double decker omnibus depart from the sign-covered factory and "Office of the Girard Tube Works." A worker labors on a rail car in an upper window, a man on horseback stops near the entrance to the "Blacksmith Shop," and clusters of pedestrians walk in front of the works. A small crowd flanks the omnibus that is adorned with illustrations of rail cars as it leaves the factory bay. In the foreground, men and boys, across from two men shaking hands, inspect an ornately painted "City Passenger R.R." car on display in the street in front of the factory. Nearby, a boy admires an elegantly dressed lady while a newsboy hawks a paper to a gentleman on promenade with two ladies who pass a woman, possibly attired in mourning garb. Murphy & Allison assumed proprietorship of Girard Tube Works, manufacturer of wrought iron gas tubes, in 1856 and began construction of cars for the City Passenger Railways circa 1857. Title: West view of Schuylkill Falls Laboratory. Powers & Weightman, manufacturing chemists, Philadelphia
Description: View showing the laboratory complex established in 1848 on Ridge Avenue near a covered bridge in Schuylkill Falls (i.e., East Falls). Within the complex, laborers haul goods by horse among the several stone buildings, smoke stacks, and trees. Near the Schuylkill River in the foreground, other laborers move crates by a pulley on a pier. Also shows a man on foot and a wagon entering the bridge, a steamboat traversing the water, and a train traveling past the complex and several adjacent lots of pasture land in the background. In 1847, Powers & Weightman succeeded Farr & Kunzi (established in 1818), and became internationally renown for their manufacture of medicinal and other fine chemicals. Title: Solar Tip shoes for children Made only by John Mundell & Co. Philada
Description: Advertisement using trompe l'oeil to depict a genre scene set in a cobbler shop as an illustrated poster with a curling edge. Shows a mother with her two sons (attired in dresses) patronizing the shop. The cobbler, at his work table, holds up a 'Solar Tip" shoe to the child showing his toe-worn shoe and offers the advice "Buy the Genuine Solar Tip. Then your shoes won't need mending." The mother holds the hands of the boy who has lifted his foot, his toe poking from the worn shoe, at which a cat, with a ribbon collar, swats his paw. The cat stands by the cobbler's feet and near boots soaking in a bucket. Tools are mounted on the side of the cobbler's table, and above his workspace a Solar Tip shoe advertisement hangs next to a shelve of personal wares and a row of shoe forms. Description: Advertisement containing a whimsical view surrounded by an ornamental border to promote the music store of Augustus Fiot. View shows cherubs playing and surrounded by instruments, including a cello, harp, trumpet, flute, guitar, and organ. Scene also includes sheet music resting on the floor and propped on a stand. The ornamental border includes a vignette, cherubs playing instruments (harp, cymbals, trumpet, flute), vinery, and floral details. Vignette shows a woman at a piano and a boy playing the flute at a recital in front of a small audience. Fiot began to publish music in 1835 with partner Leopold Meignan. Title: Standard tip shoes. T.M. Harris & Co
Description: Advertisement showing a parade float, surrounded by sharply-dressed children, processing down the block with the "T.M. Harris & Co". multi-storied building at 821 Cherry. The float carries a large-model size Standard Tip shoe on which a toddler is seated and holding a Harris shoe. The children accompanying the vehicle play musical instruments, hold banners, and carry ribbons marked "Stand Tip." Two older girls flank and clasp one hand of the other over the float as three woman, including one attired as a nurse who holds a banner, follow the procession. The banners are illustrated with the company trademarks that advertise "Warranted Double Toe" and "Highest Grade." Spectators cheer from the windows of the company building that contains a cupola adorned with a weather vane. Description: Advertisement showing the facility at Fountain Green (Fairmount Park) for the brewery established in 1844 by Charles Engel & Charles Wolf. Includes the wash house and entrance to the vault on the lowest level of the hill, the office (middle level), fermenting and brewing building, and storage house with fermenting cellar (upper level). Horse-drawn wagons loaded with barrels exit from different level entries to the buildings and a laborer working on a barrel toils within the brewery. Description: Advertisement containing a view of the hectic brewery complex in Northwest Philadelphia, i.e. Brewerytown. Complex includes an office building and dwelling (right), two ice houses (built 1865 and 1871, left), brewery plant, sheds, and courtyard. Outside of the plant, several Bergner & Engel horse-drawn wagons loaded with barrels travel in the street. The vehicles pass carriages, a man on horseback, two unoccupied drivers consulting each other, and a man, probably a brewery worker, seated on barrels talking with a man, possibly a job seeker, who has a carpetbag and a dog at his side. On the sidewalk, women, children, and gentlemen stroll, as brewery laborers work around them. Men load a wagon with barrels from one of the ice houses, as others coordinate the wagons (two excited dogs at his sides), carry barrels, and calm a horse at the courtyard entrance. Near the entrance, Mr. Bergner stands outside his office by his parked carriage and listens to an employee. Barrels line the wall of the courtyard. Within the space, loaded company wagons arrive, idle wagons and crate beds are stored, and laborers move barrels, including one from a huge pile on the terrace of the keg washing room attached to the second ice house. Upper view shows the exterior of the three-story L-shaped factory.The factory is adorned with a balcony lined with statues, the roof figure of William Penn, and signage. Marble works, predominately monuments, fill the courtyard across from laborers working with a pile of marble slabs near a horse-drawn cart. Also shows street and pedestrian traffic, including a horse-drawn dray parked near the sidewalk and a couple on horseback, a horse-drawn carriage, a horse-drawn cart, and a laborer pushing a hand-cart in the street. Lower views show the "Cutting Room"; "Saw Room"; "Polishing Room"; and "Show Room." Description: Advertisement showing the five-story storefront of the carpet warehouse, covered in signage, at 269 Market, i.e., Seventh and Market streets. Patrons enter the doorways past rolled carpets on display. In front of the store, more rolled carpets rest on crates, a boy leans on a street lamp at the corner, and a partially visible horse-drawn wagon is parked. Pedestrians walk on Seventh Street past the side of the store and under awnings printed with illegible text. Description: Advertisement showing the facility at Fountain Green (Fairmount Park) for the brewery established in 1844 by Charles Engel & Charles Wolf. Includes the wash house and entrance to the vault on the lowest level of the hill, the office (middle level), fermenting and brewing building, and storage house with fermenting cellar (upper level). Horse-drawn wagons loaded with barrels exit from different level entries to the buildings and a laborer working on a barrel toils within the brewery. Two gentlemen stand on the porch to the office and a woman with children uses the property for recreation. In the foreground, a Columbia and Philadelphia Railroad locomotive pulls a train car full of passengers, a double-decker horse-drawn omnibus travels, men ride on horseback, and individuals (woman with child and two men) stroll and descend the river embankment to greet a man arriving by rowboat. A weather vane designed as a beer barrel adorns the storage house. Engel & Wolf purchased Fountain Green in 1849 to dig lager beer vaults to ferment and age the beer brewed at Dillwyn Street. A third-story was added to the storage house after 1855 and the plant was remodeled in 1859.
