Description: Advertisement showing street and pedestrian activity in front of the four-story corner storefront, with signage, for the jewelry and watch store at 112, i.e., 316 Chestnut Street. A sign illustrated with a watch and reading "No. 112 John C. Farr& Co. Wholesale and Retail" adorns the side of the building above a window with a shade advertising watches, jewelry, and silverware. At the store entrance, a clerk greets two ladies and a girl between the display windows filled with silverware, jewelry, and watches. In front of the store, a lady and gentleman converse near the horses of an out-of-view carriage, and at the corner, a gentleman, possibly, a store clerk talks with two ladies accompanied by a child and dog. Also shows a partial view, including signage and the display window, of the neighboring business, Eugene Roussel, perfumer. In addition, print contains a Gothic-style border as well as pictorial elements that flank the central image. Elements show a clock sculpture, pocket watch, and the embellished text, "Watches" and "Jewelry." Farr started his business in the mid 1820s and changed the firm name to John C. Farr & Co. in 1850. Description: Advertisement containing a whimsical view surrounded by an ornamental border to promote the music store of Augustus Fiot. View shows cherubs playing and surrounded by instruments, including a cello, harp, trumpet, flute, guitar, and organ. Scene also includes sheet music resting on the floor and propped on a stand. The ornamental border includes a vignette, cherubs playing instruments (harp, cymbals, trumpet, flute), vinery, and floral details. Vignette shows a woman at a piano and a boy playing the flute at a recital in front of a small audience. Fiot began to publish music in 1835 with partner Leopold Meignan. Description: Advertisement showing a bird’s eye view of the factory complex of several buildings and courtyards originally built 1855 between 18th, Fitzwater, 17th, and Catherine streets. Complex includes the L-shaped building at the corner of Fitzwater and Seventeeth streets that displays the sign “Rosengarten & Sons. Established 1822” near the entrance. The building contained the office, packing rooms, and manufacturing rooms for the firm. Several individuals walk on the sidewalk and horse-drawn carts and wagons travel near the street corner. On the Fitzwater block in front of the complex, which also includes a storage shed, stable, and warehouse for the factory, other wagons and carts are parked. Next to the warehouse, a horse-drawn cart enters a passageway to the complex in which laborers and horse-drawn carts are visible at work. Several of the factory buildings contain smokestacks. Description: Tradecard showing a view of the glue and animal product manufacturing complex for partners Charles Baeder, Charles Delany, and William Adamson at 1006 North Sixth Street. Complex contains several buildings and two courtyards. The two largest buildings contain several stories, receiving entrances, and cupolas. Laborers holding tools with handles work on the roof of a shed-like building in the center of the complex. Horse-drawn carts are visible in the yard. Also includes street traffic in the foreground. A horse-drawn omnibus, wagon, and men on horseback travel in front of the fenced manufactory. Description: Advertisement depicting a view looking toward the rear of the busy store. Shows bookcases filled with texts mounted atop cabinets and drawers lining the walls. Stacks of books and eight busts of prominent literary figures, including Shakespeare, adorn the tops of the cases. A clerk works from within and patrons surround a U-shaped central book display that contains a "Gifts" case. Patrons include men, women, and children. The individuals receive assistance at the case, peruse books on the shelves, carry their purchases, converse, and make payment at the cashier booth. The booth, enclosed with ornate white iron work, contains advertising text that reads "A Gift with Each Book Sold at Retail Price." Description: Advertisement showing the factory complex between Washington, Federal, Fourth, and Fifth streets for the firm established in 1836 as Merrick & Towne (renamed Merrick & Son in 1849 and Merrick & Sons in 1852). In the right of the image, several laborers remove a pipe through the stable-like doors of a warehouse near which a pile of pipes lies on the sidewalk. A boy, sitting on a hydrant, with a dog watches the scene from the opposite corner. To the rear of the warehouse, a horse-drawn cart filled with coal enters the fenced courtyard. Piles of pipe are visible in the yard and workers are visible at the doorway of the workshop bordering the yard. Past the courtyard, a laborer pushes a hand cart by another workshop. Title: Diploma of the Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society
Description: Fair certificate containing vignettes and scenes related to agriculture, horticulture, and industrial arts. At the top, a female allegorical figure, sits upon a rug-covered throne with her arms outstretched. She is flanked by symbols of agriculture, including wheat, farm produce, and livestock. On the sides, vignettes depict tools and products of the book arts and fine arts, a threshing machine, a steam locomotive, and stems of flowers, and a grape vine. At the bottom, a historical scene of Egyptians slaves, in front of the pyramids and under the view of an overseer, cutting wheat with sickles is contrasted to a farmer harvesting his field with a horse-drawn reaper. The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was founded in 1851 by representatives from 50 counties with the object to "foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." Description: Advertisement looking down the alley way of the brewery, also known as Eagle Brewery, established in 1829. Includes the "Pale Ale Brewery Counting House" (left) and adjoining and adjacent processing buildings. In the foreground, within the doorway of the red brick counting house, a clerk interacts with a drayman. The brewery employee hands the driver a small piece of paper as the deliveryman also holds the reigns of his horse harnessed to a dray loaded with beer barrels. The horse wears blinders. Behind the clerk, a gentleman holding a mug of beer stands with another man in the doorway. Description: Advertisement showing the stove works founded in 1851 on the 400 block of Brown Street in Northern Liberties. Works include a four-story building containing the "office" and adorned with a cupola, a large work yard, and a rear "Foundry." At the multi-story building, a laborer loads stoves that are lined on the sidewalk into a horse-drawn wagon under the eye of a man at the doorway. On the roof, two other men stand in the cupola that is adorned with a statue of Liberty. In the adjacent work yard, laborers shovel and pick at mounds of coal and bricks, and load and transport hand- and horse-drawn carts on the grounds and up a ramp leading to an opening in the foundry. Signs advertise the "Drug, Paint" & Glass Store," the proprietors - "Druggist & Color Men," and depict the store emblem of an American eagle with a shield atop a barrel, surrounded by apothecary packages, and bordered by the text "Encourage your own Manufactory" and "65 Old Stand." Building also adorned with a railing on the roof. Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view of the busy courtyard of the "N.H. Graham & Cos. Curing, Packing & Smoking Establishment" on the 2000 block of Filbert Street. Horse-drawn wagons and drays enter and exit the yard between the stable and "Office" under an archway with the name of the business. The wagons are marked with the company name and the drays carry barrels marked with the name of their contents and recipient, including hams, beef, pork, and shoulders and "Miller & Brown, Packers, Cincinatti." The hinds of horses are seen through the stable entry near where barrels of beef are lined and a gentleman departs the office next to which several more barrels are lined. A gentleman passes next to them on the sidewalk. Within the courtyard, men cut and pack meat into barrels near and under sheds. Description: Advertisement for the perfumery containing a central scene set within a border designed as a monument that is adorned with a vignette and pictorial details. Central image depicts a shipping scene at a pier above the Navy Yard on the Delaware River. Shows laborers loading a tall ship with goods from a pier on which a horse-drawn wagon and cart are surrounded by crates across from warehouses. Several members from the crew of the ship line the deck of the vessel. A barge is also moored near the pier. In the foreground, on the dock, a horse-drawn coach passes near a man loading a dray with crates marked "H.P. & W.C. Taylors Fancy Soaps Phila." under the watch of a gentleman as a freight rail car approaches. Sailing vessels are docked at another pier visible in the left of the image. Barrels, crates, and planks of wood line the wharf on which draymen load and transport goods. Vignette shows the exterior of the "H.P. & W.C Taylor, Transparent & Soaps" factory at 379-381, i.e., 641-643 North Ninth Street. A clerk, possibly one of the proprietors, stands at the main entrance to his store and points to a disheveled display of mattresses, one of many. Behind him, a couple enters the wareroom in which two women work in a backroom. The couple walks under a framed figure of a goose hanging above the doorway. Shelves of mattresses line the walls and rolled mattresses fill the large open display windows. In the upper floor windows, mattresses and bedding are propped out of windows and piles of feathers are visible. Description: Advertisement containing a decorative border surrounding an exterior view of the patent medicine shop operated by C. M. Jackson. The four-story building, adjacent a walled courtyard, contains an "1855" date marker; lettering on the roof spelling "C.M. Jackson;" and advertising text on the side of the building reading "Dr. Hoofland's German Bitters and Balsamic Cordial." Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view showing the Ridge Road entrance to the "John Baird," "Spring Garden Marble Mantle Manufactory" and "Steam Marble Works" erected in 1846. Works include a central courtyard, offices, and adjoining yard marked "Garden Statuary, Vases, Ornamental Sculpture, &c." that contains a variety of fountains, vases, and statues on the platform roof. A cupola adorns a rear building of the factory. In front of the courtyards, gravestones are displayed and workers move large slabs of marble with a lever and by dolly.
