Title: Costume guerriers Japonais
Description: Interior view of the Japanese display, including samurai armor, at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Shows a mannequin attired in Japanese samurai armor, carrying a bow, and mounted on a horse. In the left is another mannequin attired in samurai armor stands and holding a spear. A sign reading "Couvernement Du Taichiou De Satsousma" rests at the foot of the display. In the right is a norimono, a Japanese palanquin or litter. Nets hang down from the ceiling. In the left background is a partial view of more objects, including another mannequin. The Exposition, held April 1-November 3, 1867, celebrated the technological and economic progress of the Second French Empire, as well as originated the classification system followed by proceeding international exhibitions. Title: [Eiichi Hirose collection of bookplates]
Description: Collection of seventeen Japanese bookplates owned by Eiichi Hirose. Sixteen bookplates were designed and created by Yumimaro Ohmori, and one was created by Koson Nakayama. The bookplates depict scenes of Japanese landscapes, flowers, insects and animals, and people, including a person on a bridge over water and looking at a mountain; a man leading a horse; two people at a camp fire; a Japanese woman attired in a kimono; a young man farmer riding backwards on an ox; a potted plant; cherry blossoms; dragonflies; and a bird flying over bamboo. Two type-written letters are included describing some of the bookplate designs and gifting the bookplates to the Library Company of Philadelphia., Title supplied by cataloger., Date from letter of gift., Partial transcript of letter accompanying the gift: I enclosed my ex-libris in use, designed and engraved by Yumimaro Ohmori, a graduate of the Tokyo College of Fine Arts, and would be glad to make an exchange of ex-libris with you. Because of my great interest in which I have been collecting ex-libris for three years, I shall appreciate very much if you can favor me with some of your specimens. Oct. 8th, 1935., Text of accompanying letter: The design of this ex-libris represents a tombstone characteristic of 12th century Japan. This plate is designed and used by Koson Nakayama of Tokyo. The design of this plate is symbolical of dramatic art, the three colors, perhaps of curtains, representing the three largest theatres that existed in Yedo (present Tokyo). This plate is used by Shuzan E. Hirose. The design show a youthful farmer rising an ox. From this one may infer that the owner (Hirose) is a collector of books on agriculture and rural problems.

Description: Exterior view of the front elevation of the Japanese Commissioner's Dwelling designed by Matsuo-Ehe for the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Shows the front entrance and porch, wooden lattice-work on the first floor, and wooden panels on the second floor. Also shows an ornate folding screen in the front doorway. The dwelling was used to house Japanese workers. Description: Collection of illustrated ephemera, primarily letterheads, billheads, receipts, and fliers, for pharmaceutical firms in the United States (predominantly New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Mid-West), and London issued between 1800 and 1940. Firms well represented include Frederick Stearns & Co.; Maltine Manufacturing Company; and Wm. R. Warner & Co. Materials also document The Altenheim Dispensary; C.A. Bartlett & Co.; Dr. Shoop Family Medicine Co.; Henry K. Wampole & Co; J. N. Harris & Co.; J. H. Schenck & Son; John C. Baker Co.; Johnson & Johnson; National Remedy Company; R. H. Steward Company, Inc.; and Upjohn Pill & Granule Co. Also contains advertisements, bags, calendars, envelopes, illustrations, label proofs, and show cards. Prominent firms represented include Antikamnia Chemical Company; A. Vogeler & Co. (later Charles A. Vogeler Co.); Charles E.
