Folio volume of panoramic views of businesses on the 200-900 blocks of Chestnut Street and corresponding pages of advertisements. Also contains a preface, which details that inclusion in the directory required subscription to or purchase of the volume; the intention to "issue the Panoramic View annually"; and the publisher's endeavor to correct all lettering errors "upon the publication of the second edition." Volume also includes interspersed full-, half- and, one-third-page advertisements for business subscribers tenanting, as well as not located on Chestnut Street. Publisher issued only the 1851 directory.

Series of illustrated trade cards for the Philadelphia jewelry firm J.E. Caldwell & Co. Illustrations depict scantily-clad boys standing on the heads of various animals, including an alligator, a donkey, and a camel. The boys wear or carry native items or clothing from various parts of the world, including a dark-skinned boy wearing large hoops in his hears, a gold anklet, and shield-like object on his back; a boy wearing a bandana around his head with a two-tined pitchfork over his shoulder; and a boy wearing a long kaffiyeh with a rifle strapped to his back. Advertisement showing the three-and-one-half story storefront with an open entrance and two large display windows on the 200 block of South Second Street. A clerk attends to a male patron within the store as a man and woman mill around them. A number of men, women, and children walk in front of, proceed into, and admire the merchandise displayed in the windows of the store. Displays include framed portraits, platters, watches, and other sliver plated pieces and fancy goods. Also shows a large model pocket watch adorning the building. Eltonhead tenanted the address beginning in 1850 until the mid 1860s before relocating to Chestnut Street. Description
Folio volume of panoramic views of businesses on the 200-900 blocks of Chestnut Street and corresponding pages of advertisements. Also contains a preface, which details that inclusion in the directory required subscription to or purchase of the volume; the intention to "issue the Panoramic View annually"; and the publisher's endeavor to correct all lettering errors "upon the publication of the second edition." Volume also includes interspersed full-, half- and, one-third-page advertisements for business subscribers tenanting, as well as not located on Chestnut Street. Publisher issued only the 1851 directory., Predominantly depicted and promoted businesses include carpet dealers; confectioneries; daguerreotypists; druggists and patent medicine dealers; engravers, printers, and publishers; hotels; jewelers; millineries and clothiers; musical instrument dealers; and tailors. Plates also show the State House, Congress Hall, City Hall, Barnum's Museum, and residences. Full-, half- and one-third page advertisements advertise a variety of businesses, including patent medicines, artificial limbs, essence of coffee, marble manufacturers, and printers and publishers. Majority of advertisements contain ornamented type and lines of advertising text. Several also contain wood-engraved pictorial details. Some panoramic views contain pasted-on details representing signage., Cover printed in gilt on blue paper and contains an ornamental border., Engravers and printers include C. C. Hooker and Henry A. Building tenanted by A. Bachmann & Co.'s confectionery, the United States Journal office, and Meadows & Co., manufacturers of silverware. Also shows the office of Peterson's Ladies National Magazine (306 Chestnut); James B. Chandler's Steam Power Printing Office, John W. Harper, watch importer, Carrow, Thibault & Co., jewelry manufacturer, and Goodyear's rubber warehouse (308 Chestnut); and F.W. Melizet & Co., commission merchants (312 Chestnut). Signage and merchandise displays adorn the storefronts and store front windows.
