Description: Advertisement showing the multi-story factory on the 800 block of Cherry Street. A tower and American flag adorn the building in which workers are visible at a number of the open windows. At the far left end of the building, a wagon travels near a man carrying a basket and through an archway to the courtyard. A horse-drawn wagon is parked near the main entrance of the factory. The entry contains the name of the firm and a small stoop adorned with iron work. Title: Pascal Iron Works, Morris Tasker & Morris
Description: Advertisement for the iron works complex originally built in 1836 on Fifth Street below Franklin Street, i.e., Tasker Street (1700 block). Laborers work among machinery parts, including piles of cylinders and wheels, in the courtyard of the works containing several buildings. One worker pushes a handcart. Morris, Tasker, and Morris was founded by Stephen Morris in 1821 as a stove and grate manufactory. In the late 1820's, Henry Morris and Thomas Tasker joined the firm which was renamed S.P. Morris & Co. Circa 1836 the firm was renamed Morris, Tasker, & Morris when Wistar Morris assumed the position of Stephen Morris and the firm began to manufacture gas pipes. Description: Advertisement showing the busy four-story factory for the bakery at 129 North Front Street, between Chestnut and Walnut Streets. A gentleman, possibly the proprietor Thomas Wattson, stands in one of the open doorways to the bakery as laborers work around him. Near the doorways, workers load kegs onto a horse-drawn "T. Wattson & Sons Biscuit Bakery" wagon and dray. Other men, hoist kegs to upper receiving windows from a group of several lined in front of the factory. Title: Robert Wood's railing, architectural & ornamental iron works, Ridge Road below Spring Garden St., Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the long three-story, brick factory occupied by Robert Wood's iron works at 1126 Ridge Avenue. The central portion of the building looms a few feet over the wings, and is adorned by tall, narrow windows on the second story, with a decorative cornice topped by a statue, bell cupola, and advertising flag. Statues of a lion and two dogs adorn an overhang near the open doorway of the iron foundry inside this central portion, under which a man and woman enter the office and warerooms. Visible inside the factory are several men at a forge, along with laborers working in the left and right wings. A man driving a horse-drawn company carriage emerges from the right wing. Title: Elevation plan of Granite St. buildings and those connecting with Walnut, Dock and Front Streets
Description: Depicts three rows of elevations showing the basic architectural stylings of the twenty-three distinct Granite Street properties constructed by John Rice for Jesse Godley between 1849 and 1853. The first two rows show the front elevations of the north and south sides of Granite Street extending from Front to Dock Streets (100-127 Granite Street). The third row shows the east and west side elevations of Granite Street, including the underground storage vaults below the street and the front elevations of properties facing Front, Dock and Walnut Streets (200 block of South Front Street; 137-143 Dock Street; 100 block of Walnut Street). The plans include pre-consolidation property numbers; notes about properties that extend, and are accessible, from both Granite Street and Front, Walnut and Dock Streets; and pedestrian traffic, including laborers rolling barrels on the sidewalk, horse-drawn carts, and men and women walking on the sidewalks. Godley financed the "Granite Street Improvements" in anticipation of an increase in trade that the Central Railroad would bring to the area. Description: Advertisement for the Bush Hill Iron Works originally established by Oliver Evans in 1809 and operated by Neall, Matthews & Moore 1846-1854 on the plot of land that is now between Buttonwood and Spring Garden Streets, facing Sixteenth Street. Shows the bustling complex of several buildings and grounds littered with cylinders, tubes, castings and a pile of coal around which several laborers toil. The workers transport machinery by horse-drawn cart, hoist cylinders onto a dray, hammer castings, push handcarts, fuel the furnace, and labor in the workshops. Description: Advertisement showing the iron works located in Safe Harbor, Lancaster County on the Conestoga Navigation Company canal (formerly Conestoga Creek) near the Susquehanna River. View includes the blast furnace, foundry, and carpenter shop (identified below the image) in addition to smaller out buildings. Carriages, horse-drawn carts, workers, and a large pile of ore are visible on the property near the canal on which canal boats, including the "Ohio," travel. Description: Advertisement showing the stove works founded in 1851 on the 400 block of Brown Street in Northern Liberties. Works include a four-story building containing the "office" and adorned with a cupola, a large work yard, and a rear "Foundry." At the multi-story building, a laborer loads stoves that are lined on the sidewalk into a horse-drawn wagon under the eye of a man at the doorway. On the roof, two other men stand in the cupola that is adorned with a statue of Liberty. In the adjacent work yard, laborers shovel and pick at mounds of coal and bricks, and load and transport hand- and horse-drawn carts on the grounds and up a ramp leading to an opening in the foundry. Near the workers, a group of men, one leaning on a shovel convenes and two boys chase each other over a mound. On the sidewalk, men, women, and children pedestrians stroll past a street lamp, watch the workers, and converse near a dog sniffing a fire hydrant. Description: Advertisement showing the busy industrial complex established circa 1819 by Alfred Jenks and enlarged in 1853 on the east side of Richmond Street between Franklin & Locust streets in Bridesburg. A horse-drawn flatbed truck enters the courtyard of the U-shaped complex containing several buildings that are surrounded by wood fencing. Within the yard, clusters of workers transport boxes and planks of wood by hand near an unhitched wagon surrounded by crates. Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view of the busy courtyard of the "N.H. Graham & Cos. Curing, Packing & Smoking Establishment" on the 2000 block of Filbert Street. Horse-drawn wagons and drays enter and exit the yard between the stable and "Office" under an archway with the name of the business. The wagons are marked with the company name and the drays carry barrels marked with the name of their contents and recipient, including hams, beef, pork, and shoulders and "Miller & Brown, Packers, Cincinatti." The hinds of horses are seen through the stable entry near where barrels of beef are lined and a gentleman departs the office next to which several more barrels are lined. A gentleman passes next to them on the sidewalk. Within the courtyard, men cut and pack meat into barrels near and under sheds. Description: Advertisement containing views of the "Factory at 13th & Parrish Sts." and the factory and showroom, i.e., "Old Stand No. 9, Sth. Sixth St." Factory view shows the bustling "George S. Watson Coach Factory" complex with workshops, courtyard, and sheds surrounded by a wood fence on the 800 block of North 13th Street. Within the courtyard, wheelwrights work on a wheel propped up next to a blazing fire as another worker walks past with a watering can. Other workers retrieve planks of wood from piles loaded in a shed and attend to a carriage. Carriage parts, a horse in a single stall, and piles of wood surround the workers. Within the workshops, carriages and coaches and metalworkers at a forge are visible. A wagon maker also works on a few vehicles placed on a balcony attached to the upper floor of the main workshop.
