Description: Originally part of a McAllister scrapbook of Civil War miscellanies., Trimmed., Patriotic print, possibly a poster illustration, containing a central allegorical scene flanked by views of Civil War battlefields. Central scene shows men of all eras and trades, including a sailor with an American flag, raising their arms in salute to the Temple of Liberty elevated upon a rock in the background. Other figures include a farmer with a sickle, a veteran of the American Revolution, and a wagon driver. Also shows boughs of wheat and artisans tools. Battle views show soldiers, including Zouaves, charging, traveling on horseback, and firing a cannon. Variant of print often used as a Civil War envelope design.

Having lately received Information that an Elegant Building is now erecting for the Philadelphia Library, an Idea immediately struck me, that if it would not be thought presumptuous, I should esteem myself very happy to have the honor of presenting a Painting to the Company that would be applicable to so noble, and useful an Institution, and which if agreeable to the Gentlemen who have the Directions of it, shall use my utmost exertion & abilities to make it acceptable; the great affection I retain for my native Country, will always be an inducement to me to contribute my mite towards the Encouragement of Arts and Sciences, hoping in due time, they will arrive to as great perfection as they are at present, in the place I now reside--- As I do not know who the Gentlemen are that have the direction of the Library, I request you will be so obliging as to communicate to them the Information I have given you, and if they should be pleased to approve of it, as I hope they will, it will be necessary for me to be acquainted with the length, breadth and height of the Room, together with the Situation they would wish to place in it, and if over the Fire-place, the distance from the Mantle-piece to the Ceiling-- You will perhaps think me too particular, but these are things essentially necessary--/As soon as I receive an answer from you with their approbation, which I hope will be by the first Packet from New York, or any other immediate opportunity, I shall put the piece into Execution., In regard to the subject, there are three, which I think would be applicable to the Institution vizt. Title: Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, [Philadelphia]
Description: Glass negative showing the Liberty Bell suspended from a pulley inside Independence Hall. The bell is inscribed with words and Roman numerals and has a large crack down the center. Construction on Independence Hall began in 1732 and completed in 1753 after the designs of Andrew Hamilton (1676-1741) and Edmund Woolley (1695-1771). It originally housed all three branches of the Pennsylvania colonial government, as well as being host to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitutional Convention. The building went through numerous renovations and reconstructions, until in 1950 when the National Park Service restored much of the architecture and interior to its 1776 appearance. It is a part of Independence National Park and a major tourist attraction as of the 21st century. The Liberty Bell was commissioned in 1752 by the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly. It first cracked after its arrival in Philadelphia and was recast twice by John Pass and John Stow. The large distinctive crack formed sometime in the early 19th century. Title: America Fire Engine Co. of the city of Philadelphia
Description: Fire company membership certificate containing two side panel views, vignettes, and firefighting iconography. The left panel shows firefighters running from the fire house on Buttonwood Street, below Third Street. Two men stand lookout on the tower above the house, as others pull the fire engine from the garage. The right panel shows the fire company attempting to extinguish the January 14, 1869 fire caused by an explosion of a steam boiler at the southeast corner of Ninth and Chestnut Streets. Flames shoot from the top of three adjacent businesses on land formerly occupied by the Burd Mansion including, Howell & Brothers, paper hanging (900 Chestnut Street); J.M. Hafleigh, dry goods (902 Chestnut Street); and J.F. & E.B. Orne, carpets & oil cloths (904 Chestnut Street). The center vignette, below the membership text, depicts a man standing in front of the two horses that are hitched to a carriage pulling the fire company's engine. At the top of the certificate, American and Pennsylvania flags flank the image of lady liberty sitting on the wing of an eagle. With a lightning bolt in her left hand, she floats above a banner that reads "Allways [sic] ready and willing to assist". Fire fighting equipment, including a helmet, engine, and bugles, are drawn as decorative elements interspersed with the side panel views. Title: Interior view of Independence Hall, Philadelphia
Description: View showing visitors of all ages in the Assembly Room being used as an exhibit gallery. Men, women, and children promenade, converse, and admire the artifacts that adorn the room with a parquet floor. Framed artwork, predominately from the Charles Wilson Peale portrait collection in addition to Henry Inman’s portrait painting of William Penn, and Thomas Sully’s portrait painting of Lafayette, line the paneled walls. Under a chandelier, in the rear center of the room stands William Rush’s wood statue of George Washington (carved 1815, installed 1824). To the right, a stuffed bald eagle sits atop the Liberty Bell (installed 1852). The bell is displayed on a pedestal adorned with fasces, a banner, and shield and stands near the "Rising Sun" chair, one of a number of chairs lining the room, which was used by George Washington as he presided over the Constitutional Convention. Description: Depiction of the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry’s flag from 1774. Shows the flag with fringed edges on a spiked flagpole adorned with two tassels and held open by a rope from its upper right corner tied to a tree in the right. In the top left of the flag are thirteen stripes representing the colonies. In the center, flanking a shield illustrated with thirteen ropes tied into a Gordian Knot are allegorical figures representing Liberty and Fame. Liberty, depicted as a barefooted Native American figure attired in a headdress, feather skirt, and with a quiver of arrows on their back, carries a bow and a liberty cap on a pole. Description: Cartoon lampooning Lincoln's belief in prophetic dreams and fear of losing the presidential election of 1864. Above the dreaming, sleeping body of Lincoln, Democratic candidate George McClellan arrives at the White House. He witnesses Liberty, depicted as a white woman, hurling the decapitated head of an African American man, portrayed in racist caricature, at a fleeing Lincoln as he states, "This don't remind me of any joke!!"
