The Library stands on the right side of the cemetery and the gymnasium and primary school of the Germantown Friends School are visible in the backgorund. The Friends Free Library was originally housed in the Germantown Friends School, starting in 1845. In 1874, a separate library building was built, endowed by Alfred Cope. The Friends Free Library was an independent organization until 1977 when it was taken over by the school. The Germantown Friends School under the administration of Charles Jones began as a boy’s school in 1845. After closing briefly in 1849, the school reopened with a new building in 1858 and began enrolling girls. In 1869, a new larger school house was built to accommodate more students. Description: Glass negative showing the Friend's Library at 5418 Germantown Avenue, a stone building with rounded windows and an elaborate cornice. A stone wall extends from the rear of the library with a metal gate near the entrance. A grassy lawn with a pine tree is located to the right of the building. The Friends Free Library was originally housed in the Germantown Friends School, starting in 1845. In 1874, a separate library building was built, endowed by Alfred Cope. Opened on February 24, 1880, this building operated as the in-town branch which stocked more modern books for circulation. The Ridgway Building in South Philadelphia served as the Library Company's main branch beginning in 1878. Its location near Broad Street addressed the westward development of Philadelphia; a committee had earlier determined that 86% of the Library Company’s city-residing members lived west of Tenth Street. No idle reading of sensational fiction was done here. The board of managers reviewed every book before placing it on the shelf, with the goal of promoting “orderly and virtuous habits,” the diffusion of knowledge, and betterment of scientific skill. The library rented this building (designed in 1783 by Timothy Matlack and Samuel Price Wetherill) at 500 Arch Street from the Society of Free Quakers from 1841 until 1897, and provided separate reading rooms for girls and boys. This view dates to c. 1870.
