Description: Advertisement calendar for 1867 and 1868 containing a filigree border surrounding a view of the exterior of the six-story brownstone and print shop owned by lithographer Haehnlen at 420 Library Street. Signage advertising the "lithographic establishment" adorns the doorway, front, and side of "Goldsmith's Hall." Building also adorned with large display windows and an American flag. View includes street and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians walk and stand on the sidewalk. Horse-drawn wagons and drays pass in the street. Shop included salesrooms and offices, a machine shop, a drying room, lithographic presses, and card, handbill, and pamphlet printing presses. Haehnlen established his own studio at Goldsmith's Hall in 1866 and operated his business from all but the first floor. He sold his shop to the firm Lehman & Bolton in 1873. Huddy and P. S. Duval outlining prices of "coloured" versus "plain" plates. Illustration depicts the four-story corner lithographic establishment of P. S. Duval and the headquarters for the United States Military Magazine at the northwest corner of Bank Alley and Dock Street (i.e., 227 Dock Street). A signboard for a house painter adorns the adjacent property facing Dock Street and "Birch's Auctions" occupies the property at the west end of Bank Alley facing Third Street. A row of cavalry soldiers faces east on Dock Street, as pedestrians, soldiers on foot, and a dog congestl the sidewalks in the foreground. The portico and columns of a stately building, probably part of the Merchant's Exchange, are visible across from Duval's establishment. Description: Advertisement containing an interior view of the shop at 116 Chestnut Street (ie. 320 Chestnut Street) after a daguerreotype depicting a long row of presses lined along the perimeter of the room near tall windows for natural light. Pressmen work on stones propped flat and on an angle. The man at the first press rolls ink onto a stone, as another man, probably an apprentice, carries a stone from the reserve of fresh stones arranged and stacked on the shelves on the opposite wall. Bottles and other supplies line the shelves between each window, and several packaged stones are piled on the floor in the foreground awaiting shipment. View includes a standing press. A foreman, possibly Wagner or McGuigan, attired in a suit observes the printers. Includes views of the recto and verso of the silver medal awarded to Wagner & M'Guigan for "skill and ingenuity" in lithography by the Franklin Institute in 1844 below the image and flanking the advertising text. Forney in the foreground. Signs on the Seventh Street side of the building include "J. A sign for Wheeler & Wilson's sewing machines at 704 Chestnut is also visible, but signage beyond this shop is illegible. The central scene in the recess of the monument shows the anecdotal story of the "The Discovery of Lithography 1796 by Aloys [sic] Senefelder." Depicts Senefelder in his study, absent of paper, writing a laundry list with a grease pencil on lime stone to record his mother's laundry list as she stands behind him with her laundry basket. Books lay on the floor and on a bookshelf on the wall above rulers and a level. The allegorical figures of Commerce and Art stand near columns on each side of the arched recess. Seven of the tradecards depict quaint scenes of children at play and work in addition to one containing a montage of vignette views of buildings at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876. Shows No. 2151 "City cousin," No. 2126 "Mirth and beauty," and No. 2155 "First mate.""City cousin," depicts a young woman reclining against a bale of hay in a field.
