Vignettes often include street and pedestrian traffic. Prints also show portraits of men, women, and children; genre and satiric scenes, including the stereotype character "Uncle Remus" (portrayed in racist caricature) designed for trade cards; pictorial and border details designed for certificates, labels, and billheads; machinery and transportation vehicles; trademarks and seals; and a rocking chair. Title: Scenes on a cotton plantation
Description: According to the accompanying commentary (p. 69), these scenes show the Buena Vista plantation in Clarke County, Alabama. As the text suggests, "The four sketches in the centre [i.e., sowing, ploughing, hoeing, and picking] show the principal operations of the cotton culture; and around figure other scenes appropriate to a cotton plantation." Moving clockwise from the upper right, the outer scenes are titled: the cotton gin, the planter and his overseer, prayer meeting, Saturday evening dance, plantation graveyard, the call to labor, and the cotton press. The text describes these scenes as follows: "The cotton-gin; the picturesque cotton-press, to whose long lever the mules are harnessed to create the power which compresses the ginned staple into bales; the morning call, performed upon a cow-horn; the owner and his overseer, figure here; as well as the weekly distribution of rations; the dance which closes the week's labor, and the plantation burying-ground. Description: Fair certificate containing an ornate border with seven vignettes related to agriculture and horticulture. Vignettes show a small herd of sheep; an iron worker with his assistant at a forge (resembling John Neagle's "Pat Lyon at his Forge"); a group of cattle; the Easton fairgrounds in front of a municipal building; a pair of horses; a locomotive travelling across a bridge away from a complex of manufactories; and a gathering of barn animals. Animals include a pig, chickens, ducks, geese, and a turkey. Border also includes farm produce such as squashes, cherries, grape vines, herbs, and plants in addition to agricultural and farm implements, including a butter churn, rake, hoe, basket, pitcher, pail, sickle, shovel, and an ax. Also contains a vignette showing the coat of arms of Pennsylvania including the banner "Virtue, Liberty and Independence." Title: Oliver Chilled Plow Works
Description: Racist trade card illustration depicting a group of African American men and women observing an African American man posing while a cow and donkey pull an -Oliver Chilled Plow in a field. A white dog in the foreground walks into a hollow and fallen tree trunk. The women in the crowd are attired in yellow and blue dresses, a red coat, and white and red headwraps. The men in the crowd are attired in blue, red, green, and yellow vests, jackets, shirts and pants. A white-haired older man in the crowd kneels forward with his hands in his knees. His top hat is visible on the ground in front of him. The man near the plow stands with his right leg crossed in front of his left and his left arm bent toward his chest. He raises his hat with his right hand and bends his head back. He is attired in a white collared shirt, green checkered pants, and black shoes. Visible in the background are two men chasing a goat. Houses, trees, fences, and a steamboat on a body of water are also depicted in the background. On the verso of the trade card is an illustration of an aerial view of the Oliver Chilled Plow Works. The Oliver Chilled Plow Works was founded in Mishawaka, Indiana in 1836 by James Oliver. Shortly after, Oliver began operating from a foundry in South Bend, Indiana where he began manufacturing chilled plows. Description: Advertisement showing several marine vessels docked in front of the engine & boiler works complex at the busy river front. Complex contains several buildings, including a "boiler works," "steam works," an "office," "ship house," and "smith shop." One of the buildings contains a weather vane adorned by the figure of William Penn. Teams of several horses haul materials on trucks past the boiler and steam works. Laborers, including men attending to a massive pipe in a yard lined with steam engines and other machinery, work on the docks, piers, and boats at the complex. Docked vessels include the tug boat "Columbia," paddleboats, barges, a sailboat, and other tugs. Also contains a vignette of a paddleboat and a sailing ship on each side of the title. The firm established as Reaney, Neafie & Levy in 1844, specialized in iron boats and engines, and later steam fire engines. Reaney left the partnership to start his own shipyard in 1859. Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view of the works at which laborers work on the grounds and in the many workshops. In the foreground, a laborer shovels coal from a long rectangular bin into one of two wheelbarrows. He works across from crates, a wheel, and other engine parts strewn on the ground. Behind him, workers inspect and haul large pieces of machinery by horse-drawn truck, in addition to push a wheelbarrow, and lead a horse-drawn cart in the direction of a large workshed in the background. Workers are visible toiling at stations inside through the open entry. In the right, other factory employees use a hoist to load a cylinder onto a docked sailing ship. Description: Advertisement containing a view of the busy foundry in a trompe l'oeil frame. Shows a gentleman, possibly the proprietor, leaving the door of the office connected to the large workshop in which laborers toil on machine parts. A boy carrying a small part walks toward the gentleman. He passes two men talking at the corner of the small office building near the side of the workshop lined by factory debris. On the sidewalk, laborers finish a large gear propped up on a platform. The men are surrounded by machine parts that lie on the ground and line the outside of another factory building. Nearby, two workers with crowbars and a piece of cylinder await a horse-drawn cart being backed up to the curb by a driver. Also shows a driver leading a horse and ox-drawn wagon hauling a large steam pipe in the street, a locomotive passing between the rear of the factory and fenced pastureland, and a steamboat docked near a hoist on the riverbank in the background. Description: Collection consists of approximately one hundred items, primarily advertising ephemera, relating to the Centennial Exhibition, held in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park in 1876 to celebrate America’s one-hundredth anniversary of independence and to showcase the strengths of the country’s industry, manufactures, agriculture, and art. Materials include circulars, price lists, advertising cards, stationery, and pamphlets for goods and services, including washboards, ironing tables, saws, springs, sewing machines, mills, mowers, reapers, horse shoes, and hotel accommodations. Other documents include souvenir view books and guidebooks for visitors, maps, a Centennial Board of Finance letterhead, a Centennial award seal, programs, and admission tickets. Several of the items contain illustrations, such as views of the Centennial buildings, and depictions of products. Trade cards, tickets, invitations, and labels represent primarily Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New York, Cincinnati and Chicago businesses and organizations, including printers and art supply dealers; perfume, patent medicine, wine, dry goods, and clothing dealers; doctors and dentists; bankers and brokers; and manufacturers. The materials contain patriotic, agricultural, and transportation vignettes, views of buildings, anaglyptography (i.e., medal engraving), allegorical figures, and Centennial Exhibition (1876) imagery. Sheet music covers, predominantly printed by Ehrgott & Fobriger, depict mainly genre and Civil War scenes, portraiture, including images of entertainers, and advertisements such as "Sewing Machine Polka." Work by the Cincinnati lithographers also include several book illustrations depicting Ohio and Cincinnati asylums, institutes, seminaries, and landmarks, as well as uncut sheets of views of cemetery monuments for "The Cincinnati Cemetery of Spring Grove..." (Cincinnati, 1862). Several of the ephemera also printed by Grattan & Co., Theodore Leonhardt, and Wm. F. Murphy & Sons., Scrapbook also contains 1860s Berlin wool work patterns ("Peterson’s Ladies National Magazine"); ornate border print specimens, some with cut-out overlays; proofs and final states of textile, fruit, liquor, druggist labels, and tobacco labels printed predominantly by Stern, Jonas & Co. and Steng & Paxson and depicting romantic, patriotic, and mystical themes, including "I Am Free" logo illustrated with an African American man ; European prints, including plates from Bernard-Romain Julien "Cours Elementaire," and issued by German publisher A.H.
