Title: Eli Hess' Penn Steam Marble Mantel Manufactory, Coates St. above Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement with much street activity showing the manufactory and warerooms operated 1856-1878 by Hess at 1434 Coates Street. At the "Penn Steam Marble Mantel Manufactory," a horse-drawn dray hauling a slab of marble marked "Eli Hess" enters the fenced yard lined with stones. Workers using upright sawing machines cuts slabs of marble within the workshop of the factory that is adorned with statuary on its roof. Patrons enter the adjacent three-story warerooms. Evergreen trees protected by iron-work fencing are visible near the entrance. Statuary in recesses, window shades marked with the business name, and a figure of William Penn mounted on the roof adorn the building. In the foreground, well-dressed passengers embark the rear of a stopped ornamentally painted "Green and Coates Sts. Manayunk via Steamboat. Exchange & Fairmount" horse-drawn street car. Description: Advertisement containing a montage of 5 views of the marble works established in 1855 at 2025 Market Street. Views are separated by borders comprised of filigree, mantles, and sculpture. Upper view shows the exterior of the three-story L-shaped factory.The factory is adorned with a balcony lined with statues, the roof figure of William Penn, and signage. Marble works, predominately monuments, fill the courtyard across from laborers working with a pile of marble slabs near a horse-drawn cart. Also shows street and pedestrian traffic, including a horse-drawn dray parked near the sidewalk and a couple on horseback, a horse-drawn carriage, a horse-drawn cart, and a laborer pushing a hand-cart in the street. Description: Although Wainwright suggests date of publication as circa 1855, date of circa 1854 is used since Rease relocated to the new business address of 97 Chestnut Street as of 1855., Contains two lines of text below the title advertising the manufactory's improved facilities., Advertisement depicting a corner view of the three building showroom and factory operated by the Schells from 1853 until 1856. J.E. Schell continued the business as J.E. Schell & Company starting in 1857. On Tenth Street, patrons enter the four-story storefront and mantle room adorned with signage and statuary displayed on a second floor veranda. At the corner, a coach waits, the disembarked African American driver standing at the ready. On Vine Street, behind the showroom, a family of passerbys admire the marble statuary, monuments, and headstones in the factory's fenced in yard. Factory laborers load a headstone onto a horse-drawn cart, inspect open crates lining the street, and review slabs of marble outside the factory's storage building. Description: Advertisement showing the three-story business facade, adorned with signage, and the adjacent marble yard at N. 13th Street and Ridge Avenue (east of North Broad and north of Spring Garden streets). A female patron enters the doorway of the establishment in which a monument adorned with a figure in recline is visible within the window. Below the window, signage for "Union Refectory. Oysters Terrapins & Game in Season by Charles Epley" hangs. A male patron descends the stairs to the oyster cellar. A man and boy admire the sepulchral monuments and headstones, many ornamented, which crowd the adjacent fenced, marble yard. Ornamentations include eagles, urns, a female figure at recline, and the inscription "Mother." In the street, a horse-drawn cart is positioned to receive goods across from a stopped "Girard College & Green Hill Chesnut [sic] and Thirteenth" omnibus. A couple exits the rear of the horse-drawn vehicle that is filled with passengers. A landscape view decorates the cab. In the background, neighboring buildings, one with smoking chimneys, are visible. Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view of the factory (adorned in signage) and fenced marble yard located at Green Street above 7th Street. In the yard, a couple reviews one of several cemetery monuments displayed in front of the factory in which marble workers are visible. The men toil near the open entry and windows. Several of the monuments, many obelisks, contain sculpted adornments. In the street, passengers arrive from an omnibus for the "Exchange & Norristown R.R. Depot. Peters Sixth Street Line" near laborers loading marble works onto a horse-drawn cart. Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view showing the Ridge Road entrance to the "John Baird," "Spring Garden Marble Mantle Manufactory" and "Steam Marble Works" erected in 1846. Description: Advertisement for S.F. Jacoby & Co. containing a montage of three titled views showing the sites involved in its marble manufacturing operations. The scenes are separated and surrounded by an ornate border comprised of patriotic imagery on top, including an eagle clutching the American flag and shield near a bust of George Washington and the state seals of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts; filigree, foliage, and tassels decorate the central portion, where putti hold up a banner displaying the title of the central view; and a lion-mouth fountain adorns the bottom portion of the border. Upper view shows slabs of marble piled in railroad cars pulled by a locomotive at J.K. & M. Freedley's "Bay State Marble Works in West Stockbridge, Mass," and includes residences and cattle. The bustling central scene depicts slabs of marble being moved from the boats and piled onto the wharf at the "Marble Depot Chesnut [sic] St. Wharf Schuyl. Description: Advertisement showing a view of the marble yard fronted by a triple arch adorned with plaques, the adjoining three-story office building, and rear factory of the establishment at Green Street above 7th Street. From the sidewalk, decorated as black and white tile, a lady, holding a parasol, and a gentleman admire several ornate obelisks and monuments within the fenced, arched yard. Several of the pieces are adorned with patriotic details, urns, and statuary. Plaques on the arches include the name of the business in addition to text reading "Every Description of Monumental Works Executed" and "Plain & Carved Mantels of Every Description." Under the third arch and entrance to the yard, a clerk and patron talk near slabs of marble propped against the wall of the office building. Behind the men, a laborer hauls a large monument by a dolly into the factory yard. More monuments, including animal sculpture and statuary, are displayed in the fenced court, upper balcony, and Gothic-style windows of the adjacent office building.
