- Description
- View puportedly showing "Naylor's Grand Fancy Dress Party" at the Masonic Hall on February 5, 1850. Party attendees, most in costume, crowd the floor and balconies of the hall. Costumed guests include a monk holding a cross, harlequins, peasants, Native Americans, and fops. Also shows some guests displaying suggestive behavior, including nuzzling and a man holding a woman's breast. A small orchestra plays in the right of the image and guests dance in the background. - Advertisement calendar for the year 1886 containing a genre scene bordered to the left by pictorial details for the firm renamed Geo. S. Harris & Sons in 1876. Scene shows a woman attired in a naval-themed costume dress descending a flight of marble stairs during a masquerade ball. She holds a mask in one hand and the hem of her dress in the other. In the background, a few men in costume, including a harlequin and clown, watch the woman. Border details include an oriental-style vase of roses atop cloth draped over the calendar, and the lithographer's tradecard. Also includes decorative trim in the upper edge. Harris, first listed as a printer in 1847, operated one of the largest Philadelphia lithographic studios in the later 19th-century. - Depicts eight people standing and posing in a corner, dressed in costumes for a Halloween party held by the Doerings in their N. Bouvier Street home circa 1897. Catharine Rupp Doering (left) is dressed as a man. The three boys have painted their faces black, but one is wearing a bonnet, the other a conical dunce cap. Two of the boys may be dressed as maids. Illustrations depict men and women dressed in costumes and dancing and celebrating Carnival, including a joker disembarking from a gondola; a little girl sitting in a lily pad; fairies; angels; jokers; butterflies; flowers; bust portraits of unknown actors in the Humpty-Dumpty show surrounding a vignette of a horse-drawn cart carrying "humpty-dumpty"; portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Rial flanked by dogs; and L.H. Stockwell as lawyer Marks and his trained donkey Jerry. The Academy of Music was designed by architects Napoleon LeBrun and Gustav Runge.
