Description: Advertisement depicting the multi-story storefront for cabinetmakers Allen & Bro. (Joseph and James C.) erected in 1860 at 1209 Chestnut Street. Title: Eugene Roussel's celebrated mineral waters in glass botttles for hotels, families & shipping
Description: Advertisement showing the storefront with large display windows of "Edward Roussel, Foreign Perfumery & Fancy Articles, French Perfumery, Mineral Water" at 114, i.e., 318 Chestnut Street. Within the store, a clerk serves mineral water to a couple at the counter. The woman sits, her parasol by her side as the man stands. Tall glass-door cabinets rise behind the clerk. Materials displayed in the windows include a stuffed bear, bottles, mason jars, canisters, and framed certificates. A drain pipe adorns the building. Also contains vignettes above and below the title showing the business's mineral water delivery wagon, and silver medals awarded to the perfumer by the "Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania, 1824" and "Reward of Skill and Ingenuity, 1842." Title: [T. E. Chapman, book store and book bindery, 74 North Fourth Street, Philadelphia]
Description: Advertisement showing the three-and-a-half story building on the 100 block of North Fourth Street for the bookseller, binder, and publisher Thomas Ellwood Chapman. A male patron enters the doorway of the building past advertisements (e.g. Books Stationery) adorning a mantle and the entry. A small broadside hangs in the window of the door, bundles of fibrous material rest atop the mantle, and shelves of books are visible lining the wall of the interior of the store. To the right of the doorway, a woman hunches over, and stands to the side of the closed cellar doors as she looks at one of several books and printed matter displayed in the window. A sign reading "Rags Bought" hangs below. Building facade also contains a wood door, possibly to an alleyway. Chapman opened the bookstore at the address in 1840, and added the bindery in 1843. Description: Advertisement for the three-and-a-half story storefront, covered in signage, on the 200 block of Green Street. Signs advertise Wetherill's Whitelead, drugs, medicines, paints, oils, glass, dyestuffs, "window glass of all sizes," picture glass, "cheap glass for hot beds," "white lead warranted pure by the ton or pound," ready mixed paints, linseed oil, plasters, pot ash, and soda. A male patron enters one of the two open entryways that are lined with barrels and sacks, some open. Within the store, two clerks, one assisting a customer, stand at the counter. Rows of shelves with pharmaceuticals line the wall behind the men. Several canisters and decanters are displayed in the three showcase windows at the front and side of the building. Within the second floor windows, stacks of boxes are visible. At the street corner, crates and boxes of pharmaceuticals, including indigo and oil of vitrol, line the sidewalk and are loaded on a horse-drawn dray accompanied by the driver. Description: Advertisement showing the three-and-one-half story storefront, covered in advertising text, on the 700 block of Market Street. Advertising reads "The Cheapest Wholesale & Retail Hat and Cap Manufactory in the World. Fashionable Styles. Caps. Hats." A male patron enters one of two open doorways to the establishment, in which a clerk surveys stacks of hats across from a flight of stairs. At the other end of the store, another clerk assists a patron, standing in front of a mirror, as he tries on hats next to shelves of merchandise. Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront adorned with signage and displays on the 300 block of North 4th Street. Bottles, small boxes, and broadside advertisements, predominately for French cordials and bitters, fill the display window, and a large model cask with advertising text and stacks of labeled boxes flank the open entrance. Box labels include "Ysla de Cuba," "Assorted Cordials," "Glorias," "Habano." A clerk confers with a patron within the entrance as a laborer enters the cellar to continue to retrieve barrels of "Madeira No.1" and "Port," which line the sidewalk. In the street, a drayman departs with his delivery of a cask of "J. Hennesy [sic] & Co. Cognac." Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront, with decorative masonry, for "George Mecke's Northern Cabinet Ware-Rooms and Furniture Ware Rooms" on Second Street between Noble and Green streets (i.e., 500 block). At the ground floor, a couple enters one of the two entranceways of the building. Furniture, including a side table, chaise lounge, armoire, and rocker are visible at the entrances, display window, and within the store. A woman, in a shawl, and holding a parasol approaches the chairs displayed at the second entrance. She stands across from two clerks retrieving a chair from the cellar to be loaded onto a "G. Mecke No. 355" horse-drawn cart parked in the street. The cart already contains a chest of drawers. Additional cabinetry, including chairs and a bed frame, and a worker are seen in the upper floor windows. Also shows partial views of the adjacent businesses of "Dubois & Son's Confectionary" (357) and P. Fries, watchmaker (353 - identified by a depiction of a watch on a visible edge of signage). Title: H. S. Tarr's marble yard, no. 274 Green St. above Seventh Philadelphia Pa
Description: Advertisement showing a view of the marble yard fronted by a triple arch adorned with plaques, the adjoining three-story office building, and rear factory of the establishment at Green Street above 7th Street. From the sidewalk, decorated as black and white tile, a lady, holding a parasol, and a gentleman admire several ornate obelisks and monuments within the fenced, arched yard. Several of the pieces are adorned with patriotic details, urns, and statuary. Plaques on the arches include the name of the business in addition to text reading "Every Description of Monumental Works Executed" and "Plain & Carved Mantels of Every Description." Under the third arch and entrance to the yard, a clerk and patron talk near slabs of marble propped against the wall of the office building. Behind the men, a laborer hauls a large monument by a dolly into the factory yard. More monuments, including animal sculpture and statuary, are displayed in the fenced court, upper balcony, and Gothic-style windows of the adjacent office building. A female patron walks between the marble pieces down a pathway toward a clerk standing at the entrance. An American eagle sculpture adorns the arches and an American flag adorns the office. Description: Advertisement showing the three-and-one-half story building with several windows that is adorned with signage and advertising text for the druggists on the 200 block of Callowhill Street. Signs and text advertise "Drugs, Chemicals, Paints, Oil Glass, and Dye Stuff"; "White-Lead & Window-Glass at Manufacturers Lowest Prices"; and "Alum, Madder, Logwood, Camwood, Indigo, Copperas, Fustic and Turpentine." Patrons, visible through the open doorways, stand at counters within the storefront; jars, and decanters line the display windows; and crates and barrels, some marked, line the sidewalk. At the side of the store, a clerk checks a list as a drayman unloads his horse-drawn vehicle. Also shows the doors open to the cellar of the store that also contains a large-scale model of an apothecary's mortar and pestle and a fire insurance marker. Title: Lacey & Phillips
Description: Advertisement depicting William N. Lacey's and Samuel R. Phillips' busy four-story equestrian store at 12 South Fifth Street selling "ladies and gentlemen's saddles, single and double harnesses, and bridles and whips." Saddles, bridles, harnesses, and blankets are prominently displayed in the storefront window and on the building facade. On the upper floors, several white men employees work by open windows. Elegantly dressed, white men patrons converse near the entryway and four horses are lined up in the street awaiting and receiving service including a pair reined in by an African American man coach driver. Partial view of the adjacent building containing the carpenter, W.B. Morrell, is visible. Lacey and Phillips, established in 1845, remained at the site until 1854. The firm, known as the finest horse equipment makers in the world, won the first and only prize medal for harness at the World Fair in 1851 and a gold medal at the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in 1853. The South Fifth Street address was damaged by fire in 1854 and the firm relocated to larger facility at 14 and 16 South Seventh street in 1855. Lacey died in 1860 and the firm was renamed S.R. Phillips Company. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story offices and storefront known as the Girard Building (102-104, i.e., 306-308 Chestnut) tenanted by Goodyears, i.e., the Philadelphia warehouse of the New York Belting and Packing Company (104), "Peterson's Book Establishment," i.e., the store of publisher T.B. Peterson & Brothers, and C. J. Peterson, publisher of Peterson' Ladies national magazine (102). Lettering reading "Goodyears Rubber Packing & Belting Company" adorns the roof of the building. Through the open entryways and large display windows, clerks, patrons, and merchandise displays are visible in both stores. At Peterson's, clerks assist patrons with items from bookshelves surrounding the room in addition to a centrally located U-shaped display counter labeled "Peterson's Magazine."
