An innovatively designed view of the December 23, 1863 procession of the Pennsylvania Volunteer regiment in honor of their heroic service with the Army of the Potomac. Depicts the procession as a serpentine with the order of procession arranged from top to bottom, with a large eagle, holding an American shield, and patriotic flags by the "Ladies for the 29th" flanked by banners reading "Welcome Home" above the entire view. Soldiers on horseback lead the procession, followed by infantrymen transported in horse-drawn wagons, with one also pulling a cannon, which are followed by a small brass military band. After the musicians, the 29th Regiment marches on foot, some carrying flags, amongst which additional military bands and officers on horse-back also process. Horse-drawn volunteer fire company ambulances carrying soldiers follow the troops, including the vehicles of Northern Liberty Fire Co. no. 1, Vigilant Fire Co., Assistance Fire Co., Weccacoe, Southwark Hose Co., and Hope Hose Company. Along the route men, women, and children watch and join the procession, shake soldier's hands, and cheer. Also shows two boys in a scuffle among the spectators., Buildings line the route, most in shadowy, partial views except the Cooper Shop Soldiers Home at Race and Crown (opened December 1863) and the adjacent buildings near the top of the view. Women crowd the windows of the home and a large American flag marked "Cooper Shop Soldiers Home" stands in front of the building. Also contains the names by Field and Staff Officers, Non-Commissioned Staff, and by Company, of the "Veterans of the 29th," including the African American Company K in addition to the names of the "Board of Managers of the Cooper Shop Soldiers' Home." The procession commenced at about one o'clock from Market Street Bridge down Market Street to Twenty-First Street eventually arriving at the Cooper Shop Soldiers Home where the members of the 29th regiment had dinner before proceeding to the National Guards Hall (518-520 Race Street) to be welcomed by Colonel John Price Wetherill. The order of the procession was as follows the First City Troop; 27th New York Battery; Liberty Coronet Band; Henry Guards; four companies of invalids corps; Provost Guard; discharged members of the regiment; Birgfield's Band; former (Murphy) and present (Rickards) commander of the regiment; Lieut. Col. Zulick of the regiment; the regiment; female family members; First Regiment, Jefferson Coronet Band, Pennsylvania Military Institute cadets, City Council members, and other guards and regiments; and lastly the ambulances of the firemen. Stock commemorative certificate with some variations for the African American 4th Regiment, Company F troop and containing a montage of allegorical and battle scenes, patriotic motifs, and soldier vignettes above the printed names of 4th Regiment Privates, Lieutenants, Sergeants, Corporals, and Field and Staff Officers. The allegorical scene depicts the female figure of Columbia, resting upon an American shield and seated next to an American eagle that looks down on a snake it clutches under its claws. Columbia holds her head with her left hand and the "Constitution of the United States" down between her knees in the other. She is portrayed as a white woman with long dark hair, wearing a gold headpiece and white veil, and attired in a dress with a blue bodice, red skirt, and white sleeves and collar. Surrounding the central scene (counterclockwise) are views of white Union soldiers at battle and firing cannons near a harbor and across from Union forts displaying American flags; a departing white Union solder embracing his wife in front of his family, an older woman holding her grandchild, his crying son, and their dog, outside of their home in the countryside as troops march in the distance; white Union cavalry corps charging during battle; the previously depicted white Union soldier returning home, shown in mid stride and holding his cap in the air as his family heads toward him with their arms out; and white Union soldiers, with a cannon, and at battle near a trench. The scene and views within the montage are bordered and framed by portraits of George Washington, Henry Clay, and Andrew Jackson and pictorial details of American flags, flowers, and filigree., Pictorial details surrounding the names of the soldiers in the lower half of the print include outer columns composed of marble and wood trunks with one unsplit and adorned with the placard "United We Stand" and another split with stakes and adorned with the placard "Divided we fall; inner columns wrapped within the American flag; medallions depicted with red, white, and blue stripes and stars; and images of the American eagle atop an American shield that is adorned with a banner reading "E Pluribus Unum." A. Hoen & Co. printed several slightly variant copies of the Soldiers Memorial in 1866, to commemorate different regiments and with different publishers. In the upper half of the print, the montage imagery remained the same, and in the lower half of the print, the imagery for and near the columns was altered in addition to the printed names of the officers and soldiers and their placement between the columns. The 4th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry was organized in Maryland, July 15-September 1, 1863. The African American unit saw action in Virginia and North Carolina before being mustered out May 4, 1866 after the designation change to 76th U.S. Colored Troops on April 4, 1864. The men march in seven lines, led by the Fencibles marching band, followed by officers, and then four lines of enlisted men fronted by a single Fencible. All the men wear uniforms and the officers wear Hardee hats, while the enlisted men wear tall, bearskin hats. In the left foreground, a group of well-dressed men, women, and children watch the militia. In the background, other guests line the portico and verandas of the mansion. near clusters of Fencibles and spectators lining the grounds in front of the mansion. During the 1850s, Dr. Wetherill, partner in the Wetherill & Brother White Lead Works, annually invited the Fencibles to his estate for spring target firing. The June 1859 excursion included seventy-four muskets and five officers, a lunch, dinner, and dance. The State Fencibles was a military organization raised in Philadelphia in 1813 as part of the Pennsylvania militia. In 1871, the military company, recruited under James Page, became attached to the Eighth Regiment National Guard of Pennsylvania. The Fatland seat was owned by gentleman William Bakewell beginning in 1803 before being sold to the Wetherill Family about 1821 and his death. He attended Army Schools of Photography at Rochester and Cornell University and served in the Photographic Section of the Air Service during World War I. Draucker was also featured in "Studio Light: A Magazine of Information for the Profession" (1930) and copyrighted a photoflash calculator in 1937. He was married to Lucretia Draucker and passed away in San Diego, Ca. in January 1971.

Commemorative print of the Spanish-American War depicting members of the African American regiments of soldiers during the Battle of Kettle Hill, generally known as the Battle of San Juan Hill, on July 1, 1898. Shows, in the left and foreground, African American soldiers, three with head wounds, lying on the ground, on their knees, back, and side. Founder's Week postcards commemorating the 225th anniversary of the founding of Philadelphia. Copies of William Birch's engraved view of High (Market) Street from Ninth depicting a detachment of the First City Troop of Philadelphia drilling on horseback. The troop promenades up the busy street where several horse-drawn carts and a dray travel and several pedestrians, including an African American man and boy (in the right), watch the guard and/or stroll the tree-lined sidewalks. A market shed is seen in the distance. The First City Troop, one of the oldest continually mounted U.S. military units, was organized in 1774 to defend against British invasion. The troop used a variety of arenas to perform drills including circuses, riding schools, and various public grounds. This collection contains the papers of Samuel George Morton of Philadelphia, a physician, ethnologist, and professor of anatomy at Pennsylvania Medical College. The papers date from 1832 to 1851, when Morton devoted his research efforts almost exclusively to ethnology and to the collecting of human skulls for comparative studies. The bulk of the papers consist of incoming correspondence, relating to ethnology and other related interests such as anthropology, craniology, paleontology and Egyptology. His collecting efforts in the field of crania resulted in extensive correspondence on the subject, which is also included here. The collection is particularly valuable in illustrating the publication process of Morton's technical publications, as it includes extensive notes, annotations, sketches, research and reviews of his published work. There is also a small grouping of documents related to Morton's son, James St. Clair Morton. The collection is arranged into six series: “Correspondence,” “Notes,” “Pennsylvania Medical College,” “Writings,” and “James St. Clair Morton.”

Portraits depict actors, artists, authors, Congressmen, educators, governors, military leaders, physicians, publishers, religious leaders, social reformers, scientists, and U.S. presidents and their spouses. Includes mostly vignette and bust-length portraits and a small number of full length portraits. Also contains a small number of trimmed portrait engravings, tintypes, and a photo-collage depicting evangelist D. L. Moody with the under photograph copyrighted 1877. Small number of sitters are unidentified., Men sitters include P. T. Barnum; Henry Ward Beecher; John Brown; Ned Buntline; Samuel Clemens; Jefferson Davis; O. S.
