Cartoon depicting the imaginary execution of former Confederate President Jefferson Davis with the ghost of John Brown as his executioner. Jefferson, holding a sour apple and attired in a women's dress and bonnet, swings imprisoned in a birdcage which hangs from a gallows. To the left of the cage Brown rises from a hole in the earth and points accusingly at Davis. In actuality Davis had no direct involvement with Brown's execution. Beneath the cage, African American men and women minstrel figures, portrayed in racist caricature, rejoice, dance, clap, and thumb their noses at Davis., Title from item., Date from copyright statement: Entered according to act of Congress in 1865 by G.
