Title: Humboldt Monument in Fairmount Park, designed by Collins & Autenrieth, for the Humboldt Festival Committee
Description: View showing a rendering of the monument, surrounded by trees and bushes, to be erected in honor of German natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt in East Fairmount Park. Monument composed of a bust of Humboldt resting on a column pedestal adorned with lion-mouthed fountains and two cherubs holding a globe marked "Cosmos" (representing Humboldt's 5-volume work about his knowledge of the earth). A stone canopy with benches protects the monument under and near which a lady and two gentlemen stand. Also shows a short level of stairs leading to the monument. The cornerstone of the monument, commissioned by German societies, was laid facing the entrance to Girard Avenue Bridge during a celebration of the centennial of the birth of Humboldt on September 13, 1869. Title: Plan for the permanent improvement of Independence Square Designed by George F. Gordon
Description: Circular illustration showing an oblique elevation looking southwest at Independence Square, situated between Fifth and Sixth Streets, and Chestnut and Walnut Streets, modified with George F. Gordon's proposed changes. Includes old City Hall built 1790-1791 after the designs of David Evans, Jr. (500 Chestnut); Independence Hall, built 1732-1748 after designs by Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley (520 Chestnut Street); and Congress Hall built 1787-1789 (540-558 Chestnut). Eight equidistant walkways, "to be thirty feet wide, to be laid with variegated tile," radiate from the center to the corners of the square and are connected by a circular walk. Also shows the unexecuted Independence Monument (center), slated to be erected by the Thirteen Original States. The Market Square monument, built in 1883, commemorates the contributions of soldiers to the Civil War. Designed as a Union soldier, it rests on a pedestal made from granite taken from Devil’s Den, Gettysburg. The fence surrounding the monument was constructed from old musket barrels and bayonets. Cannons used during the war stand beside the monument. Originally built as a Dutch Reformed Church circa 1710, the Market Square Presbyterian Church became a German Reformed Church by 1732. The building was razed and rebuilt in 1838-1839, and then enlarged in 1857. The congregation, led by pastor Jacob Helffenstein, withdrew from the Reformed Church in 1855 and became Presbyterian in 1858. In 1888, the church was rebuilt after the designs of architect George T. Pearson. Description: View showing several park visitors surrounding the monument sculpted by Randolph Rogers that was erected in 1871 at East River (i.e, Kelly) and Lemon Hill drives. Visitors view the monument, converse, greet one another, read newspapers, sit on benches, and ride in carriages. Monument shows Abraham Lincoln, seated, with a quill in his hand after just signing the Emancipation Proclamation. The statue rests upon a pedestal adorned with sculpted garland, bronze eagles, and the City of Philadelphia’s Coat of Arms. The granite base is adorned with four panels inscribed with a dedication to and quotes from Lincoln of which two are visible. The monument was commissioned by the Lincoln Monument Association, one of the first such associations formed in the country, to raise funds for a city monument in memory of Lincoln. Description: View of the prominent hotel erected in 1868 at 1500-1506 Chestnut Street. White men and women pedestrians stroll the sidewalk, and an African American man passes by on his horse-drawn cart. Businesses line Chestnut Street, including: George E. Dearborn, piano dealer; a paper hangings store; and a custom shirt proprietor. The hotel, named after the previously existing "Colonnade Row" of early nineteenth-century pillared, porched townhouses, was demolished in 1925 for the erection of the Franklin Trust Company building.
