Title: Humboldt Monument in Fairmount Park, designed by Collins & Autenrieth, for the Humboldt Festival Committee
Description: View showing a rendering of the monument, surrounded by trees and bushes, to be erected in honor of German natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt in East Fairmount Park. Monument composed of a bust of Humboldt resting on a column pedestal adorned with lion-mouthed fountains and two cherubs holding a globe marked "Cosmos" (representing Humboldt's 5-volume work about his knowledge of the earth). A stone canopy with benches protects the monument under and near which a lady and two gentlemen stand. Also shows a short level of stairs leading to the monument. The cornerstone of the monument, commissioned by German societies, was laid facing the entrance to Girard Avenue Bridge during a celebration of the centennial of the birth of Humboldt on September 13, 1869. Shows Independence, Congress, and old City Hall connected by corridors resting on arches to be interiorly decorated with exhibits representing the history of the country from 1607-1876. Title: Old Mortality
Description: View showing the Laurel Hill Cemetery sculpture completed by sculptor James Thom circa 1836. The sculpture, inspired by Sir Walter Scott's novel "Old Mortality," depicts Scott conversing with the main character of his novel, an elderly itinerant Scotsman who re-carved names on gravestones, seated on a tombstone near his horse. Title: Plan for the permanent improvement of Independence Square Designed by George F. Gordon
Description: Circular illustration showing an oblique elevation looking southwest at Independence Square, situated between Fifth and Sixth Streets, and Chestnut and Walnut Streets, modified with George F. Gordon's proposed changes. Includes old City Hall built 1790-1791 after the designs of David Evans, Jr. (500 Chestnut); Independence Hall, built 1732-1748 after designs by Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley (520 Chestnut Street); and Congress Hall built 1787-1789 (540-558 Chestnut). Eight equidistant walkways, "to be thirty feet wide, to be laid with variegated tile," radiate from the center to the corners of the square and are connected by a circular walk. Also shows the unexecuted Independence Monument (center), slated to be erected by the Thirteen Original States. Two fountains near Walnut Street demonstrate the creator's desire to beautify the square with "fountains, vases, statuary, and flower beds of all varieties"; and bronze statues on pedestals of the fifty-six signers of "The Declaration of Independence" lining the periphery of the square, which on three sides is completely open and accessible to pedestrians via granite steps. Statues of George Washington, William Penn, a group of Native Americans, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Webster, and Henry Clay would face Chestnut Street near Independence Hall., Contains passages of explicative text printed on verso. Text describes how to achieve this plan for the square. The old brick wall surrounding the square would be removed, along with the court house on Sixth Street, and the building occuppied by the Philosophical Society on Fifth Street. Title: Lincoln Monument, Fairmount Park, Philadelphia Annual greeting of the carriers of The Press to their patrons 1872
Description: View showing several park visitors surrounding the monument sculpted by Randolph Rogers that was erected in 1871 at East River (i.e, Kelly) and Lemon Hill drives. Visitors view the monument, converse, greet one another, read newspapers, sit on benches, and ride in carriages. Monument shows Abraham Lincoln, seated, with a quill in his hand after just signing the Emancipation Proclamation. The statue rests upon a pedestal adorned with sculpted garland, bronze eagles, and the City of Philadelphia’s Coat of Arms. The granite base is adorned with four panels inscribed with a dedication to and quotes from Lincoln of which two are visible. The monument was commissioned by the Lincoln Monument Association, one of the first such associations formed in the country, to raise funds for a city monument in memory of Lincoln. Description: View showing the fountain designed in honor of prominent Irish or Catholic Revolutionary heroes that was erected 1875-1877 by the national temperance society at Fountain Avenue and Avenue of the Republic on the Centennial grounds. The monument designed in the shape of a maltese cross by Herman Kirn contains statues of Father Theobold Matthew (Irish temperance reformer), Charles Carroll (only Catholic signer of the Declaration), Commodore Barry (Irish-born naval commander known as the Father of the American Navy), and Archbishop Caroll (first Catholic Bishop of the U.S.) mounted on fountain pedestals. The statues surround the central sculpted figure of Moses who holds the Ten Commandments. The Moses sculpture rests upon a rock-mound within a marble basin. Water flows over the rocks into a pool. Also shows visitors, including a woman with a parasol, strolling around the memorial. Another drinks from a cup at the "Matthew" fountain. Title: William Wirt Library and Literary Institute of Philadelphia [certificate]
Description: Membership certificate containing an image depicting a bust of author, statesman, and ninth attorney general of the United States, William Wirt, on a pedestal inscribed with the text "William Wirt Library and Literary Institute, founded March 18th, 1834." Books with "United States," "Rome," and "Greece," written on the spines rest in front of an allegorical female figure that sits next to the monument. On the left, an eagle perched on an olive branch grasps a banner with a Greek phrase written on it. A charter, laurel wreath, and several books written by Wirt, including "Old Bachelor," "Life of P. Henry," "Spy" and "Speeches," lie on the ground in front of the eagle. In the background stands a decrepit pediment from an old Grecian building.
