- Glass negative showing the wrecked ship Malta foundering near the shore at Sea Girt, N.J. The boat leans to the right and seems to be connected to something on the shore by a long cable. A man sits on the beach in the lower left corner of the frame. The Malta was originally built as the steamer Queen of the South in 1852, then renamed Malta and converted to a sailing ship in 1871. Enroute from Antwerp to New York with empty petroleum barrels, the Malta ran aground during a gale on November 24, 1885. Elliston Perot Morris bought property in Sea Girt, N.J. in 1875, where he built the summer home Avocado after designs by Quaker architect Hibberd Yarnall. Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death.
