Description: Series of trade cards promoting Joseph Dixon Crucible Company's stove polish and depicting a racist caricature of an African American woman nanny at work. Shows the nanny smiling, holding, and scrubbing an unclothed white girl, who is coated in black stove polish along her right side. The long, brown haired girl wears a red headband and is partially covered by a white cloth draped around by the nanny. The nanny uses a scrub brush under the right arm of the girl. The girl stands, her right leg raised, upon a table covered with a yellow tablecloth and stained by the polish. She looks down and touches the nanny's face with her right hand. She places her left hand over the woman's hand on her left side. The nanny is attired in a white head kerchief with red polka dots; a yellow short-sleeved shirt with red stripes; and a blue skirt. On the table is a plate; a brush; and boxes labeled Dixon's Stove Polish. Robert Stockton bought the land of what would become Sea Girt in 1853. After his death in 1866, developers bought the land and in 1875 the Sea Girt Land and Improvement Company took over Stockton’s old mansion, added wings to either side, and renamed it the Beach House. The Beach House was a popular hotel for many years, reopening in 1920 as Stockton Hotel. It burned down in 1965. Oglesby’s husband Joseph built their house in 1887, but died before it was completed. She and her son continued to live in the house until his death in 1963. Description: Die cut trade card shaped and illustrated as the front of one daisy and the back of another. Advertises the luxury hotels The Colonnade Hotel and Congress Hall. The Colonnade Hotel was a luxury hotel completed in 1868 at 1500-1506 Fifteenth Street (southwest corner of Fifteenth and Chestnut streets). The hotel was named after the "Colonnade Row" of early nineteenth-century pillared, porched townhouses previously on the site. The hotel was demolished in 1925 for the erection of the Franklin Trust Company Building. Congress Hall, one of the oldest seaside hotels, was built in 1816 by Thomas Hughes, at Beach Drive and Congress Street. The hotel, originally called the "Big House," was renamed Congress Hall in 1828 when Hughes was elected to Congress.
