Title: Old Nick in Wall Street
Description: Cartoon mocking Nicholas Biddle, president of the controversial Bank of the U.S., as a corrupt emperor of finance served by New York's financial district. Depicts a self-effacing Biddle on the steps of a bank delivering a speech to a large crowd of his obsequious cheering subjects comprised of bankers and brokers. Two men, possibly New York editors accused of accepting bribes in return for publishing pro-Bank articles, Charles King and/or Mordecai Manual Noah and/or James W. Webb, hoist him on their knees. Biddle declares that he will bear the burden of the attacks of the Bank opponents as those before him will acquit him of scandal. Title: Life in New York
Description: Collection of social caricatures lampooning the pretensions of early 19th century middle-class African American New Yorkers. Influenced by an increased fascination with American culture and a growing racism pending the abolition of slavery in England, the black characters are depicted in outlandish dress with exaggerated manners, and speaking in patois and malapropisms in an inept attempt to mimic white high society. The caricatures focus on courtship and the merchant of a steam press laundry., English reprint of the Anthony Imbert series "Life in New York" originally published around 1830. Although the American series consisted of at least eight prints, the number of prints included in the London series is unknown. LCP holds two of the series. Title: The meeting of the Friends. City Hall Park
Description: Cartoon portraying a distorted version of events surrounding New York Governor Horatio Seymour's "My Friend's" speech during the Draft Riots of 1863 when several African Americans were killed by working-class rioters. Portrays Seymour on the steps of City Hall in front of a riotous mob composed primarily of armed Irish-Americans who march past the building for "The Tribune," an anti-Seymour newspaper. Supporting Seymour from behind are a fool with a cap inscribed "Express" (i.e., a Pro-Seymour newspaper), and former Mayor Fernando Wood and Tammany boss Peter B. Sweeny, both "Copperhead" Democrats who advocated peaceful settlement with the South and who believed Republican philanthropy favored African Americans at the expense of working-class whites. Title: Arre st of the slave George Kirk
Description: Cartoon portraying the arrest during the New York case of the freedom seeker George Kirk. Kirk, enslaved by Georgia enslaver Charles Chapman had concealed himself on a Savannah brig traveling to New York City. While docked in New York, Kirk was discovered and beaten before being sheltered at the American Anti-Slavery Society office on Nassau Street. He had taken refuge at the office following his being ordered to be returned to Georgia on a legal technicality after having been previously freed by the court. In response, abolitionists including, lawyers Lois Napoleon and John Jay, editor of the "National Anti-Slavery Standard" Sydney Howard Gay, and sugar refinery proprietor Dennis Harris conceived a plan to secure Kirk's freedom through his concealment and transport from the Nassau Street office in a box addressed to abolitionist Rev. Ira Manley in Essex, New York. Kirk was discovered and arrested during the transport. Kirk was later freed through a legal argument presented by Jay. Depicts a horse-drawn dray labeled "D. Harris" on which Kirk, portrayed in racist caricature, is within a crate. Kirk is being pulled by police from the crate. "Tracts" fly out from the wooden box and its cover marked "Rev. Ira Manley, Essex, New York. This side up with Care" has fallen to the side of the dray. Kirk exclaims "Gorra mighty massa you take away my bref! dis child didn't come into de box hisself! de bobalitionists put him in it!!" White police men reach for him and make comments and threats, including smelling "a rat"; shaking "the life out of (Kirk)"; and the "Carman" having a "rather black job." The white carman, his hands on the reins of the horse and looking back, responds "It ain't anything else." Scene also includes a middle-class Black woman holding a parasol and middle-class Black man, who with a monocle to his eye, exclaims "Ponhona. Here's a game!! while standing near a group of white men abolitionists also witnessing the moment. The frowning abolitionists, including possibly Elias Smith, make comments and observations, including about Kirk being again "in the hands of Philistines"; having to take out "another habeus corpus ... at any expense"; and Manley being disappointed in "not receiving his consignment." Description: In Brooke, H.K. Tragedies on the land (Philadelphia, 1845), p. 129., Ursula Newman, of New York City, was shot on November 20, 1828, by her common-law husband Richard Johnson, in the presence of her three children (her daughter Rachel and two sons). Johnson had just learned that the landlord had taken the equipment from his home printing office for back rent. Cook, of the Charleston Photographic Light Artillery, with a strong force, made his way to Fort Sumter. ... Col. Cook immediately and heroically penetrated to the presence of Maj. Anderson, and levelling a double barrelled camera, demanded his unconditional surrender in the name of E. Anthony and the photographic community. Seeing that all resistance would be in vain, the major at once surrendered, and was borne in triumph to Charleston, forwarded to New York, and is now for sale in the shape of exquisite card photographs at 25 cts. per copy
